What are some retro games that fit this trope?
Pic related. The NES port of Ultima 3 is rather awkward JRPG makeover of the series with its colorful palette blobs, upbeat soundtrack, utterly broken classes and a number of useless and exploitable content; but the game somehow manages to be charming nonetheless.

Nice water.

The NES version of Ultima: Exodus will always hold a special place in my heart. It was the first RPG I ever played (my uncle bought it when I was really young), and the entire reason I wanted to learn to read so early on.
Because of Ultima, I also played and (mostly) understood Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy before I started kindergarten.
Rapid Angel. Extremely fun anime beat'em up platformer, with a broken little juggle system. I still want to see someone do a speedrun of this.

Most overrated classic games ever?
All of them.
There, thread's over.
Your mm oms puasy
You're on the internet too much if you care if a game is overrated or not.
Alright /vr/ i need some help with this shit load of fuck game. I'm trying to unlock some of the secret cars but i have never been able to do it. For example to get the dodge viper you need to beat arcade pro series on expert. Yeah good fucking luck. On hard its retardedly unfair, the computers are too fast and the tracks might as well be ice because your sliding into everything because apparently on expert, they thought it was a good idea to make your cars handling utter shit. After months of trying and trying i have given up on this fucking game. I hate to cheat, and always earn things legit, but decided enough is enough. And guess what? The cheat doesn't fucking work. On every website i checked it says press R (x6) at the title screen to unlock all the cars and it doesn't fucking work. I have tried everything. I've never been so pissed off at a fucking game, i just want to check out the secret cars. Can anyone help me? Am i doing something wrong?
git gud
ive never heard of these secret cars. you can get a convertible diablo in the game.

Is it safe to say Bubsy 3D is the PlayStation equivalent of Superman 64 - as in the one game on the system that is indisputably the worst? Or is there an even worse PlayStation game?
For all its faults, Bubsy 3D is bug free and playable from start to finish.
For something to be worse, it has to be like SQIJ on the ZX Spectrum.
Why are you Americans so keen on knowing which thing in whatever media is the "undisputed" worst? Like all articles from trash sites always begin with
>"the worst X you have ever seen"
or
>"top ten worst X ever".
Does something being globally recognized as THE worst to be relevant? And what when you finally find it? What will you discuss? How it's bad and how it was never meant to be that ungodly bad? We know that already. Do you enjoy mindlessly bashing a game which can't even defend itself from how "bad" it is? I can already imagine the meaningful posts:
>Man this game is so bad
>Ikr? SO fucking bad.
>lol this game sucks monkey dick
>haha like it's the absolute worst
>what were they THINGKEN
>it literally gave me brain cancer
>when will X e-celeb review this?
>how can you make a game THIS BAD
How about what we could do to make it better? That would be a nice constructive activity.
I know there's a cult following for so bad it's good movies, but I'm not sure there is even a "worst" because someone would always hate something else more.
Please explain.

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!
>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.
Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Still wondering what setting would I look for in the service menu of a PVM to lower the intensity of the blue? I notice there's some bleeding going on.
I have a question about CRT's wearing out, and how to tell what the problem is.
I have a Smile KFC CA-2011 PC CRT rebadged by Viewmaster, and I'd like help determining if the capacitors are failing. It's not anywhere near bright enough unless I set the termination to high - and then it gets blurry from signal reflection along with the fact it's still not very bright.
However, if I displayed any one quarter of the screen white, that quarter can get nice and bright. But if i then changed the whole screen to that same white, it only stays bright for an instant and then fades to being much dimmer overall. So some parts of an image can be bright, but when the whole screen is meant to be bright, the overall brightness fades within half a second or so. Or doesn't fade; just never gets very bright, if no part of the preceding image was bright.
Does this mean the capacitors are wearing out? Given the phosphors are capable of being bright as long as the whole screen isn't, i'd say they're ok. And given the monitor is in perfect focus with the termination set to 75R, i presume the Flyback is in reasonable condition. The only thing left is the fading effect.
I've actually pulled it apart and kinda begun cleaning it and removing the caps, so i hope they're the problem!
Feedback appreciated; i'd love to know if there are certain caps it's not worth replacing, etc.
Photos to follow completion of the project :)

Ah, ok then.
I had one of these, Mortal Kombat 3 for my brazilian Master System, back when i was around 7yo, but the game always seemed weird. Few playable characters, no history...
Was it some kind of shitmade port for Master System, or my memory just sucks?
was a game gear port, but yeah they didn't even care
Well its an 8bit system, what did you expect?
for 8bit it looks damn good, on par with the MK1 and MK2 ports.
Do you think this is google or some shit?
ITT: we talk about retro games that were heart pounding and intense, games that kept you on your toes and challenged your skills. Pic related, the very last part of the turbo tunnel requires absolute concentration to beat it and I've manged to get past it only a few times.
I can do turbo tunnel on autopilot. The fireball section of Volkmire's inferno is the absolute concentration you speak of.
>>2943639
I never did find a discernible pattern during that part.
I just hugged the left side of the screen and dodged like a mofo.
You guys STINK if you can't get past turbo tunnel. You would shit your diapers at clinger winger or rat race.

Ghosts 'n Goblins
Even if you know what you're doing there's still a chance the enemies will fuck with you. Always keeps you on your toes.
>This is just like one of my Japanese animes!
I was thinking over how the dialogue from Metal Gear Solid is a lot more memorable than the later games. Jeremy Blaustein worked on the localization of the game. From what I've heard, his dialogue is not 100% pure translations of the Japanese. Has anyone actually gone and compared the dialogue from the original Japanese game to what ended up in the English version of the game?
Especially curious about the most famous lines, like the one above.
Pretty much, although I recall him saying in an interview that he regretted the can love bloom in the battlefield line. He also took some unnecessary liberties, like giving Mei Ling an accent when she's supposed to have grown up in America.
If you want to check out a more literal translation without knowing japanese, play Twin Snakes.
>>2942657
>like the one above.
I see no reason not to think that line wasn't lifted from Japanese.
How about>he'd be sliced faster than an onion on an infomercialwhich I think was also cut from TTS.
>>2942657
>play Twin Snakes
The script is basically the same, and not so reminiscent of the Japanese save a few lines which they deemed not appropriate in the original, and the game blows.
>>2942828
It's the same game. If it "blows," so does the original.
The Darius franchise article on HG101 has been rewritten from scratch.

That shit was shareware since 1999. Pretty cool rpg where you play as a party of orcs. Has a cool spellcasting system. Did anyone here play this? I only played the demo back in the day.
When you had to create a party of 8 complex characters in an unfamiliar ruleset, my eyes kinda glazed over and I didn't want to use the pre-set party.
Maybe when I have a huge stretch of free time
Trying to find an old PC game.
Here's what I remember. Some of these may be off.
You were some surfer with green hair that washed up on a spooky island.
It was a first person adventure game.
The very first section of the game had skulls buried in the sand.
I know this isn't much to go on but I can't remember anything else and I've looked everywhere.
I have no clue what game that was, but it sounds pretty awesome though
also, there is no active lost and found style thread?
>>2942104
Why not make this one?
> adventure game
> medieval world with talking Dinosaurs
> you're a prince
> you accidentally discover and awaken a red demon from your Wizard's chambers
> have to go on an adventure to put the demon back to sleep/reseal it
> first level/area outside of castle- help out the local dinosaurs and cavemen by organizing them against bunch of T-rexes
> I got stuck on a cave of witches because I couldn't read english at the time
