I want to buy a sega console and I can't decide which one.
Saturn is way to expensive to collect and in the master system I am just not interested.
Therefore I have to decide between the Mega Drive and the Dreamcast.
right now I am more in favour of the mega drive, but that's just kind of a general feeling, not based on anything.
So which console do you guys think is better?
Consider that I am from Pal-Land.
Also give reason why I should buy the console you suggest.
Thanks.
>>2998335
I would say mega drive just because it would be hard to go back from the Dreamcast but the Dreamcast is easy to burn all the games and still gets commercial releases
>>2998335
>collect
*sigh*
>>2998335
Get a dreamcast
burn the entire library
figure out what you like
I'm not sure how I managed to overlook this series before. Maybe because it was never officially localized. It nonetheless seems like a tragically underrated RPG.
Anyone else on /vr/ know about this series? I believe there are a few fan-translated ROMs available, although I'm not sure which ones since I've been playing the games in Japanese.
>>2997624
You bet son.
>although I'm not sure which ones since I've been playing the games in Japanese.
The Aeon Genesis patch is strangely decent besides the excessive swearing in some parts, but it's rather accurate overall, not that it's a problem if you know moonrunes.
Where are you at friend?
>>2997624
I just started Metal Max Returns one hour ago.
One piece of info for you Metal Max newfriends, the boss battle theme is actually Metal Max 2's random battle theme, another nice thing of the remake since there were only three battle themes in the NES original.

What's the worst/most fearful incarnation of pic related?
>>2995613
Maybe FF6's, or FFX's if not retro is on the table (Ambushed! Instant bad breath every fight)

The ones in the Omega Ruins have a 100% ambush rate
The one from 8
Why is this game so overrated? Is Super Metroid any better, or just hype?

What are some retro action RPG games that use a slow, methodical combat system that predates Demon's/Dark Souls?
I've always wondered what are the historical antecedents of these games.
I've been told that Severance: Blade of Darkness is one such early example of a slow, methodical action RPG. I looked up some videos of it and noticed some similarities, but that game is from the year 2000. I was wondering if there are any from before that.
Blade of Darkness is literally what the game copied.
Not retro.
>>2967663
>Not retro
Well, I know. That's why this thread isn't about Dark Souls, but about retro games with a similar style of combat that predates Dark Souls.
>>2967660
Fucking Kings Field ya dipshit.
Point #1: Not as good as SMW or SMB3. Still a good game though.
Point #2: Those transformation sections are dumb.
>>2967407
>Point #1: Not as good as SMW or SMB3. Still a good game though.
Entirely subjective. I find it way more enjoyable. But I do enjoy the SMB games.
>Point #2: Those transformation sections are dumb.
They provided some variety while being more or less tedious. The mole was definitely broken, but I think the car worked really well, the helicopter wasn't bad and being a train driving in the background was really funny.
Every level throws a gimmick at you at probably won't return in later levels. That makes Yoshi's Island really memorable. I can remember at least one part, one small section of every single level.
>>2967407
>Point #1: Not as good as SMW or SMB3. Still a good game though.
Not to write off your Point, but Yoshi's Island is completely different from Super Mario.
Yoshi's Island is the Zelda II of the Mario series.Zelda II rocks so hard it's given me galstones
Point #2: Those transformation sections are dumb.
They're kind of unrelated to why Yoshi's Island is a great game. I don't actually have an opinion.
Sorry I don't have more to say. I love all the games mentioned here, each for different reasons. I can't find the time to compare them. Cheers.
>>2967407
>Point #2: Those transformation sections are dumb.
If you're wondering why those were even in the game at all, look up a little game called Plok.
And play it. And I mean, really, really play it.
Let's talk about our recently played PS1 games.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4:
Came out in 2002 but the PS1 version counts as /vr/ and runs on the THPS2 engine. It is the best of the series on the PS1 because of the sheer variety of tricks and game mechanics.
PO'ed:
I was really anxious to get this game after seeing another anon posting it, but I dunno. The enemy designs range from horrible to kind of cool. The weapons are OK, the infinite throwing knives are interesting but most of the weapons are generic Doom-type stuff (with the exception of any shotgun-type weapon). The levels have very vertical layouts, which is okay when you have the jetpack. The controls are fine.
Quake II:
Probably my favorite FPS on the PS1 (still getting the hang of PO'ed). The levels have been downsized/simplified from PC but the game is still quite good. There is full analog stick aiming but keep in mind that the DualShock 1/2 don't really do FPS aiming well. There is co-op and splitscreen deathmatch. Why the hell did Doom, Duke, etc require a system link cable? Was splitscreen too difficult to implement at that point?
Geom Cube:
This is a great 3D Tetris-style game with 3 axes of piece rotation. Pieces can vary greatly in size and shape (more so than Tetris). You can play against the timer, a friend, or an increasingly tough roster of CPU-controlled characters. Every time you clear a layer, it goes on top of theirs.
Also, does pic related exist for the old-style PS1? Is there an off-brand one that works on it? My brother had one and it was the bomb.
>>2967254
>Why the hell did Doom, Duke, etc require a system link cable? Was splitscreen too difficult to implement at that point?
Pretty much. A lot of early Playstation games had to use system link for multiplayer because they haven't really figured out the power of the Playstationâ„¢. I know Wipeout 2097's issue was having only system link, but Wipeout 3, which came out in 1999, had splitscreen with game modes that compliment it. This seems to fit in with Quake II, also released in 1999, having splitscreen.
>Crash Bandicoot 2
One of the best 3D platformers ever made. Knowing how Naughty Dog stretched the PS1's hardware to bring those games to life just makes it even better.
>Strider 2
I can't even put my finger on why I love this game so much.
>Croc
It's not the best game ever made, but it's just such a beautifully saccharine nostalgia trip. I feel like an eight year old again as soon as I hear the Ice World theme.
I know the PSone and later systems had those screens, but my Googling fails to find any version made for the old PlayStation. With some modifications it might work, but the original psx has an internal power supply.
The best way to get my idea across is to use a game like LSD. From the graphics, to the art direction, and especially the music, I'm looking for games that can give off a creepy vibe. Doesn't have to be a horror game, it could be, but try and post any game that gives you this feeling. I hate using LSD as an example since that game is pretty atmospheric and interesting than it is creepy.
>>2967146
Honestly King's Field gives me similar vibes to LSD.
They're both on the PSX and have rather similar early first person polygonal 3D eeriness.
I think a big part is that the controls are sort of clunky in both (and amplified by your slower pace in King's Field) and that PSX fog effect is keeping you in the dark so even if you're expecting something to happen it can still catch you offguard and there's this fear that arises from your clunky ass controls and getting the sudden realization that you're in a tight spot (in King's Field suddenly in combat, in LSD suddenly wonder what the everliving fuck you should try and do). Also the audio is great in both, very atmospheric.
Any game that is slightly surreal can be unsettling.
Umihara Kawase (SNES) has photorealistic black and white backgrounds that are weird, and the world is made up for objects as if you're tiny, while walking fish attack youbut it's just a dream.
Porky Pig's Haunted Halloween (SNES) can be unsettling at least at the start, walking around a spooky forest where the backing track is more ambiance than music, then you climb a tree and it gets psycho-string-ish. The rest isn't a bad can get occasion provide a good spook (like the opening to the mine level being completely black except for some shit in the background)but it's just a dream.
Earthworm Jim Special Edition (Sega CD) has two addition levels, Big Burty and Intestinal Distress. Big Burty is set on some weird green planet where everything is made of wood and you have to let a red monster thing chase you to make it move outta your way, but it kills you instantly if you get too close. Intestinal Distress is a classical "womb"/inside the body level. Both have music that is more ambient than musical.
Monster Party (NES) is a generally weird game. The first level is probably the worst. Play it and you'll see, I really can't say much without spoiling it. The rest of the game is milder, though the ending is pretty fucked up,but it's all just a dream... Maybe.
Sweet Home (NES) is an RPG set in a haunted house. It can be pretty spooky, although the low techiness of the game detracts from a lot of the horror.
Hands down: Sentient.
If you figure out what the hell you're supposed to do, it's pretty amazing.
A real shame how bad this game turned out to be.
Lets share and talk about top10/reviews/reviewers of retrogames.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YuujwWl3R0I
This is one of my favorite reviews, its highly enjoyable i think and more reviews should have so much love in it.
I also like getting any kind of information about old nintendo/ps/sega games, so if you have any good suggestions about reviewer/critics lets hear them.
What i hate most about reviewers is, when they try to hard to put themselves into scene, i need information and scenes of the game, a little sense of humor is okay too but not screaming around or such.
And please no 'its opinion based', some things arent.
Good/interesting examples are:
>didyouknowgaming
>Exoparadigmgamer
>planet dolan gaming
>that one video gamer
>crgundertow
>superderek rpgs

Here's mine though.

Da fuck, there's a 2?
I loved the first one even though in retrospect it was kinda bad. Driving and Light Gun sessions were the best.
>>2966310
>in retrospect it was kinda bad
No it's one of the best ps1 games actually
>>2966320
It was above average at best. I consider DHWAV to be proof that we could've had a full-3D GTA game on the PSX
Big sprites are beautiful, naturally, but the same is equally true for small sprites and I think that is often overlooked. It takes a lot of talent to make a distinct, recognizable and good looking small sprite and I love it when it works.
The early days of the Game Boy saw a lot of good examples, as seen in pic related. They respected the small screen resolution and made something fitting for it. Later on sprites got bigger and in my opinion quite often too big, examples of such are also present in pic related. SML2 is an example of that, arguably Metroid 2.
What are you favorites?
>>2965834
>that fucking donkey kong
I never understood why they made pre-rendered shitty 3D models and then turned them into sprites. DKC games always looked like shit to me.
>>2965850
The first DKL was definitely bad, but they managed to make it work in the successive games. Smaller sprits and less detailed backgrounds. And the animations of the main characters are very detailed. One of the few occassion where I actually like the prerendered sprites.
>>2965834
Game boy and Nes are a gold mine for these.
Here a few of my game boy favorites that haven't been posted yet.
>>2965850
Totally agre with you. I can understand the appeal of pre-rendered sprites, since it can look awesome if done right. But those 90's 3D models were awfull and looked awfull as sprites too.
DKC always looked too messy to my taste.
I'm a man, but I have this thing about loving to play as female characters, especially princesses.
Aside from the obvious racing and fighting games, what are your favourite retro games where you can play as a cute girl? The cuter the better. Bonus for her being the main/sole playable character, and double bonus for princess.

Me too. Phantasy Star is great. Valis series as well. Monster World IV is a must. There's also pic related, but how cute you think she is will probably vary.
