Hey guys, remember Chips Challenge?
>>3010265
Jezz Ball was better.
Had to use passwords to beat CC. Shit was actually impossible
>>3010273
Could of told me that before spending 5 bucks on Steam
>>3010303
Are they really peddling this shit on steam? That's amazing.
Reminder that Half-Life was almost going to be one of the worst games ever made

You could make that argument with any game's alpha footage before the modern indie game scene ran that term into the ground.
>>3010213
From what I heard, Valve thought the game was sucking ass so they decide to start over. And this was way later than the version in the video.
>>3010213
Exactly.
It's not like Valve and any intention on releasing the game in this state, it doesn't look very good because it's not finished yet.
Is Sid Meier's original civ considered a good game?
Good enough to charge the atmosphere with strange gases.
>>3009997
Yes, 2 is a quantum leap though.
dude on the left is Sid himself
Original Tomb Raider, PC version or PS1 version with an emulator /vr/?
I've been wanting to play through the first game again but the last time I played it was over a decade ago on the Saturn. Which version would be better? Here are my thoughts:
> PS1 version:
- Easier to get running
- Easier to con figure for a controller
- More audio tracks
- Can play in higher resolution
- Better FMVs
PC version:
- No warping textures due to PS1's shitty z-buffer
- Unfinished Business addon
- Longer draw distance
- Steadier framerate
What should I go with?
I thought someone ported Unfinished Business to PS1?
Anyways, the PS1 version does very well for me.
I heard that timed fire platform room doesn't even have save points in the PC version, so it that dings it a few points for me already because fuck that room.
>>3009996
PS1 version in an emulator would have savestates even if the game didn't have savepoints in that room.
Actually savestates would be pretty nice considering the original game uses save crystals so you can only save in certain spots and only once per crystal.
>>3009983
>> PS1 version:
>- Can play in higher resolution
>- Better FMVs
how come? you could select resolution and sacrifice framerate?
and there fore if emulated, you woudl have smooth frate rate and higher res?
at TR1 release ibmPCs were already superior to ps1, how did this happen
Why does nobody ever bother playing this game? It's objectively better than both its original and FE12.
>objectively
there's that word again.
>>3009965
It was either that or literally. Buzzword or not, I felt I needed to use that strong a vocabulary.
You know, I only play the localized Fire Emblems since there's a big scary back catalog and I don't know where to start.
Should I really do this one or are you just being contrarian?
With SFV now out I felt the urge to get back into the series and play 3rd Strike. Brief history: I got it like 2 years ago and hardly played it for more than like a couple days because it was too hard and I needed like 30 continues even on 1 star.
I just played it tonight not having touched it since and breezed through 1 star with no continues. I feel like an absolute beast. I played some Alpha 2 and 3 like six months ago, so a lot of that must've stuck with me. I feel like now I actually have a chance for beating this sucker on 4 stars.
So SF thread then, any tips or exploits I should know about? Gill's obviously going to be the hardest but I already know to let him use his super so he won't revive. I'm just playing Ryu for now because I'm a noob and he's the only one from Alpha I'm familiar with. Pic related, it's him.
>Throw many hadokens
>>3009657
>With SFV now out I felt the urge to get back into the series and play 3rd Strike.
yeah, V really does suck compared to the older games
what's the best way to play third strike on pc? like what version should I play?
I absolutely fucking hate that pre-rendered 3D model bullshit which became popular towards the end of the 16-Bit era.
It makes me feel ill to even look at it.
When does /vr reckon 16-Bit graphics peaked before going down the shitter? Artistically or technically?
Artistic and technical.
I dunno, I think it looks good at the correct resolution, on a CRT display.
I still probably like traditional sprites better, but I have nothing against pre-rendered ones.
I think most people will say 2D graphics peaked on Metal Slug series.
I love the big, baroque detailed sprites and how it's animated, but sometimes I wish the color palette was broader.
Yoshi's Island would get a shout artistically.
Discuss the greatest and not so greatest games for
>Gameboy
>Gameboy Color
>Gameboy Advance
My favorite games for each are Megaman V, Wario Land 3, and Sonic Advance.
Virtual Boy games welcome also.
>Gameboy Advance
No
>>3009238
>Sonic Advance.
These games are the only true successors to the original Sonic games.
Please, just accept that the GBA is not retro and stop shit posting.
>Load up your favorite game
>Select continue
>It says no save data found
>Check memory card
>Younger sibling formatted it, erasing hundreds of hours of play time
This was the worst thing in the universe back in the day. What are some of your retro horror stories?
>playing final fantasy 3
>haven't saved in over an hour
>parent yells at me to go to bed
>OK let me just find a save spo...
>no now, flips light switch
>Whole room is connected to that switch
Holy shit it still makes me mad thinking about that. And it happened more than once too.
>>3009097
>Got a great Pokemon party, with 8 badges
>Shows friend Pokemon
>He deletes save file so he can start from the beginning
>He's no longer a friend anymore
>He's no longer alive
>>3009097
Fuck, that sounds infuriating. Thankfully my parents knew a little about gaming and didn't do this to me
Who would win in a videogame face-off?
I love both Mark and Arino, but they're not /vr/.
>>3008904
>Arino
>plays only old games on his show
>Mark
>his series is called CLASSIC games room
>not retro
>>3008901
I would have to go with Mark.
Yeah he complains a lot about sucking at the games but he's not that bad, and he's pretty great at shmups. Arino takes way too long to do anything. And he'd probably take a field trip to Okinawa in the middle of playing
What was his problem again?
Too many shit threads.
>>3008859
for you

His son became Kylo Ren.
/saturn/ saturn general
i just installed psuedosaturn and im getting stuck at reading cd data
is 10x too fast for saturn games ?
it's the slowest my burner will go.
Been playing Last Bronx. Pretty good fighting game, I never see anyone talking about it. Even in Saturn fan circles. Probably has the best backgrounds of any 3D Saturn fighter.
>>3008807
Probably because it's not that good.
I've been playing DoDonPachi. Pretty amazing shooter.
>>3008789
I burn mine at max speed (48x) and have no issues playing them on my saturn.
So this guy on Craigslist is selling a SNES, PS1, Dreamcast, and GameCube as a lot and doesn't have any video cords, power cords or controllers for them.
I'm only interested for the SNES, as the other consoles are in rough shape, but he won't break the lot up now (intially was selling for $15 each, he wants $60 for the lot). Is this worth it at all?
Here is the post.
bring your own cords to test them at the very least, but overall i'd say not worth it
>>3008764
Bring your own cords, tell him you want to test out the console before you buy.
A lot of these sorts of listings are selling genuinely busted consoles - although some they've genuinely just lost the cables over the years.
But ask yourself this: why would he have a SNES, PS1, Dreamcast and GameCube, all without cords, selling each of them for $15?
I've just read all the Pitchfork articles on Socks Make People Sexy for the Mother, Chrono and Final Fantasy series, and now I need more reviews like his.
What are some essays/reviews on retro games that have that same combination of well written examination and misty eyed melancholy, with a more general nostalgia for an era rather than a game?
>>3008561
I always liked this old review of Final Fantasy 1. It perfectly captures why the game was so great back in the day.
http://archives.insertcredit.com/reviews/ff1/index.html
Not to get all e-celeb, but Spoony's talk about playing Ultima with his brother is very much like this.
And a tech version would be the software/hardware blog that was ran by K.Mandla. That same aspect of the march of time and trying to convince people that there was a reason to care about any of it at all.
From the end of the Chrono Trigger review here: http://socksmakepeoplesexy.net/index.php?a=trigger
> It encapsulaes everything about the genre that ever made it worthwhile and sidesteps the excesses.
Get Lamp and The BBS Documentary also have this atmosphere. It's touching, because it can only come from dead genres or past technology.
>>3008570
I love Tim Rogers. His Earthbound review is my favorite:

Which was the better 4th gen controller?
>>3008437
Genesis, not even a contest. That d-pad is sex and the sixbutton layout is way better for fighters.
US SNES with dimpled buttons.
Never liked Sega d-pads.
SNES. I like the genesis controller, but it's not as comfy as the SNES controller, and the button layout just isn't as good.
I can't imagine playing a game like Mega Man X on a genesis controller, that would be so annoying.
