Why are some PS1 games rendered in such a wide resolution?
45 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Because they're made for analog displays that would squish the aspect ratio down but still maintain the resolution.
>>
>>3025965
Because more horizontal detail.

It's supposed to be corrected to 4:3 by the tube monitor.

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone here knowledgeable about the Dreamcast library could point me to all worthwhile local multi-player games on the system. Any format is fine, but up to 4 players is preferable. All I have at the moment is Power Stone 2 which is fun as hell, but I want to take advantage of the 3 extra controllers I was donated to by some friends.

I like it the best. It's much more fun.
I only played the MK series and Tekken and I like both but I prefer MK because its more fun. In Tekken you just have to randomly push buttons and its rather easy. MK is really hard and needs precise timing and random button pushing gets you killed. I killed Heihachi by randomly pushing a lot of buttons. That is not possible with shao khan.

i cannot command on street fighter, i still have to and want to play this.
>>
>>3024085

Game mechanics mostly.

Dial-a-combos. Block button.

Personally, I think the gameplay feels rigid compared to other fighters. I'm sure someone else can explain it better by discussing links and chains, but I don't understand it well enough.

Yes, but I'd skip my way to FE3, 4 and 5. 3 is a classic FE, 4 has some new mechanics and the plot is pretty good (especially compared to the new entries) and 5 is challenging.

Does Super Ghouls N Ghosts make it into your top 25 SNES games of all-time?

Selling over a million copies during it's release it is one of Capcom's greatest titles, especially during the era (well at least that's my opinion).

Anybody else totally dig this game?

How the fuck do you get good at this game? I played it a bunch as a kid and now I picked it up again, but somehow ten years of life lessons and brain development haven't made me any better. The same shit happens, I feel like I am winning all game, then one of my forts gets annihilated and I rage quit. I am literally playing on normal difficulty on the easiest scenario, "Arrogance".

There has to be a way to be good at this without resorting to save scumming or playing the scenario over again so you know what the map looks like.

How many troops should I carry with me? How many do I leave to defend? How many heroes should I have explore the map? All the guides online give me tricks, but no basic strategy.

> then one of my forts gets annihilated and I rage quit.
First, settle down. You're going to lose a town here and there.
AI heroes are douchebags. If you don't have the Shackles of War, unless you can defeat them in a single round, they're going to blast one of your stacks with a spell and flee.
Build toward a Capitol first. Even if you don't have any resource generators around you, there's always the Marketplace -- though it will be terribly expensive to use until you get more towns.
Never let your opponent get the first swing in melee combat. If you move a melee unit, pay attention to where enemy melee units can attack and give yourself an extra hex to avoid being a punching bag. Enemy morale boosts may still get you from time to time.
Once you start getting several days' travel out from your Capitol, consider appointing a hero to the garrison. The extra stats and spells may come in handy.
It's difficult to say how many troops you should leave, though the slow-moving, high-HP ones (such as Golems or Zombies) make good castle units since they won't be slowing down your hero's movement and can soak some damage while your arrow towers work on the siege troops.
If your town is about to be taken by a clearly stronger foe, buy every troop you can. You'll suffer losses, but you won't have to fight these troops when taking it back.
>>
>>3022242
Gotcha. Thanks. Yeah, this all makes sense. I've started appointing heroes to garrisons yesterday, it helped a bunch. I also found out slow units slow your hero down, which I didn't know, so I've been leaving my earth elementals at home.

How does fleeing work? I assumed it was a surrender button, since my hero always "abandoned the cause" when that happen, which just removed him from the game, so I assumed you still lost everything.

I appreciate the tips. I have my auto save from yesterday, so I'll probably go ahead and boot that up tonight. And retake the town. Just frustrating. I just got Firebirds and they were way worse than I thought they'd be.
>>
>>3022251
If you flee from battle (the running icon), your hero immediately appears in the Tavern with all artifacts, but loses his troops.
You can surrender as well (tattered flag icon), but only to enemy heroes. This allows the hero to keep all artifacts and troops, but delays his appearance in the Tavern until the following day (also carries over to the new week, if you happen to surrender on Day 7).

I just got an AES and I want to buy this converter and the 161 mvs cart.

It's the MVS Magic Key

I hear a lot of shit about the converter. Is it just purists being purists, or are there actual grievances? Like, does it break easily or cause pin damage or anything like that?

I got Samurai Shodown 2 and KoF 94. Pretty stoked so far. Also, make suggestions for AES carts worth hunting down.

Classic Tomb Raider vidya thread faggots.
I only played 2 and 3 back in the day and I want to know where do the first 5 games stand in order, and also which versions are the best? I am looking to go down the real ps1 route instead of pc and emulation but unsure how viable it is.

Angel of Darkness is not shit edition

Why PS1? The PC versions of these games are just fine.

I've played a fair bit of 2 and 3 (I bought 2 on release based on the hype of the first game) but I only actually finished the first game recently. I've got to say, it basically completely changed my opinion on the series. Tomb Raider is essentially an alternate interpretation of how the 3D platformer is supposed to look and it's quite fun to play. The original game is basically the definition of "too long" -- it's really, truly, mind-bogglingly long for a single-player platformer -- and there's far too much combat in a game where the combat is absolute trash, but it's damn fun to play once you get the hang of it.

I haven't played much of Tomb Raider 3. My biggest complaint about Tomb Raider 2 was the increased prevalence of combat; how does TR 3 do?
>>
>>3021631
There is a lot of combat in 3, on par with 2 probably which isn't too much for my taste. Main thing that 3 has going on for it is that it probably features the biggest variety in levels, you go all around the globe more or less.

Games are visually pretty fucking bad and playing it on pc two feet from the screen is fairly disheartening. PS1 on a real crt that softens the image nicely, couple of meters back on the couch with a gamepad seems a lot more appealing. I played a bit of Last Revelation yesterday (just skimmed through the tutorial to see if the disc works) and, it being my only classic Lara experience for solid 10 years now, didn't feel too bad. FPS is around 20-25, controls are as jerky as I recall but not too bad. The only truly shit thing about ps1 are the loading times but I am willing to put up with it.
>>
>>3021636
Hm. My primary PC monitor is a CRT (...my only PC monitor is a CRT) so perhaps that explains why I recommended that version. Carry on then.

I'm going to try TR3 tonight, then. I like the sound of level variety and I suppose I can put up with the combat. It's hardly game-breakingly bad, and variety would be most welcome.
