What is your opinion on Chrono Cross?
great setting
incredible soundtrack
run of the mill jrpg gameplay
nonsensical story
>>3032263
It's a fucking joke.
>>3032263
not playing it around the release = stop
If someone came up to your with an Earthbound 64 cart and said he would sell it to you but it has to be at a good price.
How much would you give him/her?
Honestly I would do well over 1000 USD
How much hipster cred would it buy me?
turn 64 degrees and walk away
>>3031669
At least five man buns.
Greatest retro platformer of all time.
You can't prove me wrong, either.
>>3031586
Virtual Boy Wario Land was better
Im not joking
3 was better. 1 was also better. 4 was better too, but that's not retro.
What exactly is wrong with Ridge Racer 64?
Nothing? It's a port of RR Revolution with a new "on-rails" drift physics engine, but you can choose to have the old physics instead.
The soundtrack is kinda small compared to the disc versions but it's still pretty awesome. Also it was developed by a western Nintendo studio themselves.
Nothing. Its a great game.
Has Reiko on the cover, there's nothing wrong with it.
why doesn't /vr/ like final fight 2&3 again ?
i know a lot of people dont like 1 because its a bad port, but i was just playing through 3 and it has a really nice pace too it, albeit its a bit too easy
also beat em up general ; recommend me snes\sfc beat em ups
>>3029694
>albeit its a bit too easy
Exactly, 3 on expert difficulty is easier than FF2 on normal. I don't dislike it, btw, I just wish it had an arcade version.
>>3029715
i suppose the music is kind of shit compared to SOR1&2 too.
i played some anime futuristic beat em up with a really long japanese name a few months back, any idea what it was ?, i don't wanna download a full romset again just to find it
i THINK it was based on an actual series too
one of the characters could do hadoukens and shoryukens
>>3029724
ghost chaser? rushing beat? sonic blastman?
Which one do you consider superior? Explain advantages and disadvantages
Better game, coming through.
2 has Metal Blade which is the most OP Mega Man weapon ever so it basically depends on your personal feelings on thatI love it
Dislikes
MM2
>Metal Man dies with 2 shots of his own weapon
>Bubble Man stage
>Item-1, 2 and 3 abuse
>Wily Castle 4 (and its music too)
>I don't know why that "difficult mode"
>Item-3
MM3
>Top Man
>Reloaded with ammo and health reloads, extra lives and energy tanks, making it easy
>Unnecessary MM2 boss fights
Name a flaw.
>>3029452
Boring level design compared to SMB3. The levels had a lot of empty space, and few platforming challenges.
Spin jump breaks 90% of the enemies in-game.
Can only save after beating a castle.
>>3029461
You couldn't save AT ALL in SMB3.
Remember the time when a Metroid game had a Michael Jackson reference?
I mean I know he was huge here back then but was he that big with the japanese?
Did anyone ever use it, though? Seemed like it was only good for showing off.
>>3029347
>was he that big with the japanese?
yesI slept with ALL these kids!
>>3029368
Why Japanese look so yellow in old images?
Why was the Dreamcast lacking in horizontal shmups?
>Don't know if the OP or a mod deleted it, but here it is again.
It got deleted because mods agree the Dreamcast isn't retro
>>3029319
>>3029326
Mods agree Dreamcast isn't retro. They usually delete them, like the old thread.
I don't want to argue about WHAT is considered retro, I want to talk about WHY the different opinions of "what is retro" exist.
I don't know what's right, and I'm not saying anything is right. I just want us to talk and make each other think about things, maybe you'll manage to sway some opinions either way.
Discuss.

And here's how I understand some viewpoints:
> Constantly 15 years before today's date
Because stuff gets old. The SNES wasn't a "retro console" when it came out, it was the latest and greatest of its day. One day in the future, a bunch of faggots will post here saying how antiquated having a physical controller is, and reminiscing about their retro PS4.
> A set date, usually 1999, 2000, or 2001
Because the games industry changed at this time. It went from small studios producing artfully good software and taking risks, and moved towards the big-budget triple-A guaranteed-sales guaranteed-sequel EA-acquired bullshit we have today. This brought about a change in attitudes of developers, advertisers, and console makers. They don't make em like they used to.
There's also the changing technical limitations of systems at this time. Fairly realistic 3D became possible, leading to a lack of imagination in games, because you're presented a rigid visual reality with no room for interpretation. This could also have led to a lack of effort designing truly engaging game worlds.
> Apply these thoughts to the release date of the system, or of the game itself?
This doesn't apply to most retro systems, but could apply to things like the GBA. Whilst the console was released in 2001, the last game was made in 2007, with over a dozen releases in 2006. That's the same year the PS3 was released, and I think we all agree that's not retro.
>>3028953
Also, is retro gaming about the attitude and "spirit" in which the game is made? There are plenty of indie developers today making retro-styled games which mainstream AAA players will never play. Could something like Fez or Shovel Knight ever be considered /vr/?
Consoles:
240p
4:3 aspect ratio
Pre online connectivity. ie PSN and XBox live
Would be the big things.
So I was curious about emulation untill I discovered homebrew. I'm wondering what's so special about it? Are there any good homebrew games out there? How safe is it?
>>3028567
Homebrew emulation allows you to turn your PSP and Wii into the ultimate emulation machines.
homebrew is a nicer name for piracy
There are definitely homebrew games out there, completely original games for all kinds of systems especially retro ones since they're simpler to develop for.
However, I doubt that's what OP is talking about so... What are you specifically talking about, OP?
So i got here a copy of Doom for snes but as you can hopefully see in the picture, one of the silver connector thingies is missing. Is this the FX chip or something? The one on the right is there but not the left. Will the game work? Also, will is damage the system or game by trying to get it to work / play it? Sorry, but i know fuck all about this stuff.
Doesn't matter at all. I have a couple carts like that
>>3028009
What exactly are the 2 silver clip things for?
Are the pins missing because of damage or were they never there in the first place? Developers aren't obligated to use every single pin.
So I just picked this up, did I fuck up? This was billed as a nintendo exclusive wipeout, so I'm assuming none of the tracks made it into any other releases of the game?
Also /r/ing that wipeout guide graphic of all the versions, couldn't find it for the life of me.
It's okish, The PS1 and Saturn games were better.
Play the game and decide for yourself.
It's okish, F-Zero X was better.
Why is Garou so legendary among SNK fans?
>>3026602
It's just an awesome game.
>>3026716
Also, the new characters were mostly decent or better, and more importantly they actually seemed like they belonged in the series unlike half of the new characters in Street Fighter III.
>>3026602
Because Garou is SNK's SF III 3rd Strike. Restarted the formula from Fatal Fury and the real bout series and created some new items to the fighting genre like the TOP and just defend. Also its very easy to play since the moves are set similar to a capcom fighter alot of quarter circles. Even with its new roster they have familiar movesets to older SNK fans will know about like Butt, Kims sons, Rock and Terry. Also the graphics are some of the best on the neo geo.
I still haven't played this game. Which version of it is the best? N64, GC, Wii or 3DS?
Keep in mind that for the first 3 versions I will have to emulate them.
I am also curious about what is the best way to play MM. I have already played the N64 version (emulated) 3 or so years ago, and I'd like to revisit it after OOT, but I don't know if the 3ds version is worth it, I heard the changed core mechanics and the overall feeling of the game is vastly different.
>>3026421
Why do we have to have this thread all the time? It's getting a little monotonous.
I'm not even going to recommend a version, invariably someone will argue that X version is better and then someone else is also going to get pissy. Just play the version that looks the best to you.
>>3026421
They all virtually the same. Only autists care about detail like OH NO THEY LIGHTENED UP THE GANON FIGHT A LITTLE BIT.
>>3026421
N64
