Do "bits" actually mean anything with regards to a computer's processing power?

Ever since Sega vs. Nintendo we've been conditioned to think more bits is automatically better, but I've been reading up on assembly language and experimenting with homebrewing, and from what I can tell it seems that a CPU's "bits" are far, far less important than the amount of memory it has, the color depth, the sound capabilities, etc.

Not to mention, it's well known that the GBA was 32-bit just like the PS1. The Atari 2600 and NES both use pretty much the same stock 8-bit CPU, just clocked at different speeds. Not only that, most modern PCs are still only 64-bit.

So, do a console's "bits" have any actual meaning, or are they just a marketing gimmick? Am I correct in saying that today we could easily make an 8-bit system that exceeds the power of an N64 by many orders of magnitude?

it was a way of marketing but not just because of it
>>
>most modern PCs are still only 64-bit.
Even 64 bit only became important once the 32 bit address space wasn't enough to address all RAM.
Expanding the word length to 16 and 32 had similar implications. The infamous 640 KB conventional memory were a relic from the original IBM PC which used an intel 8088 which had a 8 bit external bus.
>>
>>3096279
I thought address space and a console's bits were two different things. IIRC the NES has a 16-bit address bus because there's no way you could map all that memory to 256 bytes.

Okay, so this is only half-/vr/-related, but one of the reasons why I have difficulty having fun with Mario Galaxy is because Mario's maneuvers are much less flexible than they are in Mario 64. For example, in Mario 64, the angle you at which you jump off the wall corresponds to the angle at which you jumped towards the wall. In Mario Galaxy, on the other hand, your wall jump always comes off perpendicular to the wall no matter what angle you started from. This, combined with the blander thumbfeel of clinging to and sliding down the wall before jumping off compared to precisely timing your button press to hop off the wall with a satisfying thump and a "Yah!", made wall jumping a lot less fun for me.

A friend of mine disagrees with me -- he says that the wall jump physics are better in Mario Galaxy because they're more forgiving and easier for a newbie to pull off. I think accessibility is great and all, but the thing is that you can easily play through Mario 64 without ever learning the wall jump, but the wall jump is required to progress through many levels in Mario Galaxy. I'm not sure if you need to be able to do it, but it feels a lot more like a carefully restrained piece of the player character's basic toolset rather than the semi-advanced technique that was fun to mess around with and do cool shit with.

I'm inclined to think that Mario Galaxy is just a more linear game in general. Mario 64 just dumps you into the level and lets you explore this (for the time) breathtakingly exciting 3D world, whereas Galaxy charts out a very specific course from planet to planet for you to follow. Mario 64, on the other hand, almost scratched a Super Metroid sequence breaking itch.

What do you guys think? Which wall jump is better?

it's not just wall jumps, this freedom of movement and physics depth permeates all through the controls in mario 64. it has yet to be surpassed in this regard.

I think that making it easier was a mistake, but jumping perpendicular to the wall is correct.

The game is Genesis: Beyond the Revelation. It was one of Square's earlier games for the PC-88.

Translation is available here:

Translator's notes mention it being a roguelike, but from what I've played it's nothing of the sort.

First time playing this. Thought it was meant to be a strategy game. I just equip every slid with the highest stat items (go smash a few heads at the arena if I do t have the funds) and trounce almost every mission (the only time I fail is when MC gets killed when somehow his body is fucking one hit KO, pseudorandom bullshit). Is it just because I'm playing easy mode?

Also can someone explain why enemies will occasionally target each other? It always misses (through the magic of chaff grenades) and their missile four doesn't decrease. Just a DS glitch?

I've only played the SNES version, so this may not apply, but the game is very badly balanced. The only difficult mission is the Hell's Wall one, and that one is a joke because the AI is extremely bad. The slow gameplay becomes stale because there is so little variation and challenge over the course of the game. Not to mention the game itself is poorly designed; for instance you can only move then attack, not attack then move. It's a shame because I think this game had a lot of potential.

I don't ever recall the enemy attacking itself tho. Maybe just DS, but that seems weird. Are you sure it's not the enemy attacking an NPC?

Is there any music out there related to Castlevania Symphony Of The Night? No lyrics, just instruments?

SOTN related? what do you mean?

I can think of Malice Mizer's gekka no yasoukyoku song.
It has lyrics but the single includes an accordion arranged version and an instrumental/karaoke version, not sure if this is what you're looking for but whatever.

Music related to what is found in the soundtrack/game. Some tags that come to mind are gotchic, haunted, dark, epic, cathedral, classical. No emo.

Examples like:

Dance of Pales

I'm looking for music that is strictly instrumental, but thanks for the recommendation :]

I'm trying Tactics out for the first time & got the resolution mod, but everything's so tiny considering my screen resolution of 2560x1600.

Is there any way I can double the dpi for the game or something like that? Also is there supposed to be a way to run it at higher resolutions in windowed mode, cuz it defaults to 800x600.

avp is overrated. dutch is useless. lyn has that gun and reload glitch for infinite safety and keepaway

all cps2 scrolling fisticuffs are overrated

that robot game is dumb as dumb can be

Dungeon and Dragon is freaking boring and vanilla with shitty character design. only the fighter looks cool the others look like hank hill and a midget

Dungeon Dragon 2 is the buggiest arcade game ever made. more 1 hit kills on bosses than any other game ever made in the history of the galaxy. fucking ogre shadows aren't even implemented properly. most unpolished and unfinished and hastily put together piece of horse manure ever made.

battle circuit is dumb and slow with stupid character design

Streets of Rage 2 is better than them all.
