Why is the emulation on every system besides pc such a pile of shit?
Played SMW on my psp 3000 with the most well known snes emulator.
After taking the time to adjust settings, being playing for a while before reaching Ludwig's castle. And when i reach him, graphical glitches start.
Lovely.
I can't see the fireballs.

So, and this goes to all the cunts that say that emulation on psp or 3ds is perfect, have you ever finished a game in any of those systems?
Any fucking game?

The convenience of a portable screen mixed with the quality of PC emulation.

SNES emulation was never perfect on the PSP.
Try GBA version.
>>
SNES emulation on PSP sucks.

I've finished many NES and Genesis games on my PSP, those emulators run almost flawlessly, but for some reason, not the SNES.

Let's have a thread that corrects bandwagon opinions that commonly get regurgitated around here.

Definitive versions of:
>Castlevania 1
Amiga > NES

>Rondo of Blood
PC Engine CD > SNES

>Castlevania 1 Reimagining
Castlevania X68K > Super Castlevania IV

>Symphony of the Night
Saturn > Playstation

What else have you got, /vr/?

Has anyone on /vr/ built a compact and cheap PC for emulation?

If so, how did you go about it?

I'm thinking of building one myself because I just don't have the space for a decent retro set up.

I was going to do this as well but after comparing a micro tower and RPi. I bought Wii.

Around 09 my dad accidently ripped the screen off his laptop and I installed Windows XP Performance edition on it and ran emulators up to N64 on my TV with it. I thought I was the fucking shit. Got pretty damn good performance using an USB Xbox controller

These days, raspberry pi emulation is on the edge of being actually worth it. I won a 3 at a hackathon the other week and finally messed around with emulators on them and I'm actually kind of impressed.. compared to early footage of the original model trying to run the same things. I just cleared SOTN in Richter mode(not sure if that really matters but, its a lot faster paced) on it and the performance was great.

It's been years since I've seen somebody actually "build" a pc for emulation.. the cost really isn't worth it, all I've ever seen these days are salvaged laptops and credit card sized computers.

Getting some high quality saturn emulation in the comfort of my living room would be fucking awesome though...

How did he "accidentally" rip the screen off?

Come on, you can't leave that out...

Recently, I’ve seen a lot of talk here comparing the sound capabilities of the Mega Drive/Genesis and the SNES.

I recently came across the fact that legendary video game music composer Tim Follin ( ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amiga, Atari ST, Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, SNES, Game Boy, Dreamcast and PlayStation) simultaneously composed and programmed the SAME score for BOTH Genesis/SNES ports for two games.

Follin was famous for his clever manipulation of limited sound hardware, for example his work on the ZX Spectrum from which he managed to play up to six channels of audio from one dynamic speaker.

Typically, Sega and Nintendo ports had different composers which made direct comparison of the systems respective sound hardware difficult… so this is the best comparison we could possibly have.

Same composer, same programmer, same score:

>Spider-Man

SNES:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8Q0s95SRXM

Genesis:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0Vlbk5lgn0

>Batman

SNES:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpdwSNhB29M

Genesis:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1ucNQk7zR4

Obviously, the SNES is technically superior as the infamous “Genesis sound” is on full display against its mirrored SNES score; a refined “real instruments” sound versus a tinny and brassy one with a “farting” bass... with none of the subtleties the SNES displays.

And on a side note, my all-time favorite individual track (SNES):

And my favorite Follin OST (Dreamcast):

It seems you literally have hearing problems. High frequencies are usually the first to go, which is why you can't tell that the SNES is so muffled sounding. For people with normal hearing the Genesis versions sound far better.
>>
how severe does one's autism have to be to go so hard on genesis shitposting, writing long ass threads

and besides out of all the consoles follin worked, old or new, only the genesis used FM to make music, the key to good genesis music was having a decent FM sound driver which he did not have

How does one go about finding a q3 server these days? Preferably CPMA, but vanilla is fine too. Quake Live is the absolute last resort and I'd do anything to avoid it.

Is it all really as dead as it seems or am I not looking in the right places?

OpenArena is still active. It's basically Quake 3 with different maps.
>>
>>3101906
This. Or Quake Live. It's basically Quake 3 but with a bunch of 12 year olds playing it (so essentially just like you remember). Q3A is dead and has been for a while.

I can still find a Doom or Quake (original) game now and then, but those communities are far more loyal. I think there are a few UT servers still up too. Quake 3? Nada.
>>
Well I find it hard to believe that nobody plays CPMA or even Q3 anymore.

The public servers are empty, that's a fact. But is it due to the fact that everyone has migrated to QL or is there still and active scene in fragmented communities? I feel like somewhere out there, fun is being had on private servers, I just need to know how to get there.

Alternately, is OA a good place for tourneyfags?

Is... Quake Live? I left in disgust after all that announcer change, dumbing down scandal. But if there is still a community of tourneyfags in QL that run servers without all this newbie shit, just good old pro matches, than I'll feel right at home. Just need to know that before I fish out the 10 bucks.

There's nothing wrong with emulation.

People want to play games as opposed to the collector aspect and that's fine.

Demon's Souls

Because that's when I had everything going for me. Out of highschool, employed at a good job, hanging out with a QT who almost became my GF.

Then everything spiraled out of control and here I am in my parent's basement wondering where I went so fucking wrong.

I just watched this GDC talk about commercializing emulation for the sake of preservation, and it got me thinking...

Would you pay for a Spotify/Netflix type service which gave access to large libraries of emulated classic console games?

Here's the talk if anyone is interested: http://www.gdcvault.com/play/1023470/-It-s-Just-Emulation

Easy no.

Absolutely not, for the same reason I don't use the actual Spotify and Netflix. I'd consider it if you paid the publisher directly for the right to download a DRM-free clean dump of the ROM that you could play in any emulator or load onto a flash cart, but I would not fall for the subscription meme.
