My Final Fantasy order was 1-6-7, so it completely took me by surprise.
Had I played 4 first, sure I'd have been expecting party members to die every 2 seconds, but Aeris's death genuinely surprised me.
So much so that I was one of those guys searching for 'how to revive Aeris' back in the early days of the internet.
Granted I never did any of the rumors (collect 99 tissues, get 99 gold chocobos, max out all your materia), but it was a genuine shock.
What did you think?
>>3154504
Well, we the Euro-blessed were thankfully spared of the upsetting suddenness of the event, pic related
Still, not having had it spoiled for you must have been a statistical aberration, at least if you were in school back then

I don't think anybody remember the back cover when her death happen. You reach the end of disc one after 20-30 Hours.
what were your favorite /vr/ shows growing up? pic related for me and ninja turtles if that counts as /vr/
>>3152923
This of course.
The Mario Show with Lou Albano live action sections was amazing, I have pretty good memories of waking up early in the morning and having breakfast while watching that show before going to school.
The live section parts were probably the best and most hilarious, while the cartoon part probably weren't as good, but they did the job for a kid like me at the time.
I remember liking all of them including the SMB3 ones (which I think lacked the live action), but I never got into the SMW cartoon, I remember watching it a few times and it never clicked, barely remember anything about it other than Yoshi being there.
As for Sonic, I enjoyed Adventures of Sonic but I remember being disappointed that it wasn't SatAM, since I had previously watched the intro to that one on a VHS before, and I was pretty hyped, it made it seem as the best cartoon ever, and it was based on Sonic.
Turns out SatAM was aired some other day and time (not from US so no, not saturdays), but I think I ended up enjoying AoS more, SatAM wasn't all that good outside of the intro, I think. AoS wasn't amazing either but it was more entertaining in a looney toons way.
Then I watched the OVAs, many years later, which IMO are the best Sonic animation out there.
As a kid I also enjoyed some other anime, like the Street Fighter II movie, Fatal Fury, SF Alpha, the Virtua Fighter anime series, among others.
I always wanted to watch Vampire Hunter and I just never did, despite being a fan of the games. Been meaning to watch them for a long time but I'm just lazy to watch anime these days.

I really liked the Earthworm Jim cartoon with Dan Castellaneta voicing Jim. Also CG Donkey Kong.
Why were the Super Nintendo and the Mega Drive consoles modified and in the Mega Drive's case, rebranded to "Genesis" for the North American market? Why go to the effort of releasing two different models of consoles when a majority of the world only used one? Was it autism?
>Why go to the effort of releasing two different models of consoles when a majority of the world only used one? Was it autism?
The majority of the world market especially for video games is America.
>>3151775
Yeah okay, but what was wrong with original designs of the consoles then? Why did America need its own version of the SNES and Mega Drive?
>>3151782
Because it's a different market.
Why did so many uncles work at Nintendo in the 90's? I bet you had one in the family too!
>>3151435
I thought only dads worked at nintendo.
>>3151438
dads can also be uncles if they had siblings. I will be neither as I am a shut in.
>>3151435
I actually worked for NoA from 1988 to 1991.
PDAs exploded into popularity after US Robotics released the Palm Pilot 1000 in 1996. Even though they weren't intended to be gaming machines plenty of games came out for them, but I've never heard of a retrogaming PDA scene, or a PDA game collector
Let's change that, /vr/. Let's show some love for Palm
>>3143386
PDAs are utter shit.
Hahahahaha wtf is this threae
i have a windows ce 3.0 palmtop somewhere that i've got nethack running on. it's alright.

How does this make you feel /vr/? Can you watch the whole thing without being triggered?

There was a thread on /v/ recently about how hard Super Metroid is.
>>3147820
>Can you watch the whole thing without being triggered?
Yes, because the kids playing "got it." They said they liked the game, and appreciated it for its exploration elements. I'm not sure what's here to be triggered about?
Would have liked to seen their reaction to the original Metroid, however.

Did /vr/ ever play this?
I first played the SMS version and didn't understand why people raved about the sound and graphics until I saw the Amiga version.
Also it was hard as hell.
Let that be a lesson to you to avoid the console ports of Amiga games even if they're better known and/or more accessible.
Also perhaps let this be a gateway for you into Amiga platformers

Thanks, I'll take a look!
Had the Lynx version.
Loved it, though I never got far.
It had a great alternate soundtrack.

Anybody else feel as if the upcoming PS4 "remake" is missing the point? Much like so many modern remakes/re-imaginings of classic franchises, it's as if it doesn't feel comfortable in simply technologically elevating what people liked in the original. No, its developers always seem to have this idea that fans and newcomers alike would rather be playing another popular game than something faithful, so they "fix" it. Or maybe it's just publisher demand, "make it more like God of War or Halo instead of the thing that makes it special".
I mean, look at this shit:

Which does /vr/ prefer, Xmen: COTA or Xmen vs. Street Fighter? Specifically the PS1 versions. Also, 90s Capcom fighting game thread.

Man up and play the Saturn ports you fucking faggot.
How did some old games based around hardware sprites manage to have such intricate detail sometimes (like the Castlevania series)? A lot of games had fancy title screens and unique graphics at the end of the game and sometimes at the end of a level, but some games had things throughout the game that were so intricate or detailed without seeming to be tiled, or were just so unique, that they seemed to defy the hardware and system limitations. How'd they do that?
Actually it's much simpler than it looks on a system like the NES with hardware sprites and tile graphics. If you'd tried to do that on a PC with a dumb frame buffer, it would be far more difficult.
>>3150716
try reading next time
CV III uses the MMC5 mapper if that's what you were asking; it adds more VRAM and allows higher detail levels than are normally possibly.
What are some of the worst RPGs you've played? I can't think of any that really stand out, besides the obvious choices of virtual hydlide or beyond the beyond. I wanna hear stories and experiences.
FF8
Wizardry 4
I've played shoddily designed RPGs but Wiz 4 had a lot of thought and testing put into it. Unfortunately it all went into making the game as unforgiving as possible.

Lufia & The Fortress of Doom.
it does 2 things fairly well, and thats the intro, and the ending. Everything else is grindy, uninspired, and irrelevant to the over arching plot fetch quests.
