Hell yeah. N64 didn't get this kinda action. Did you play the one with the dual stick cooking game?

I miss when demos where free and consumers had the power to try it before they bought it, forcing developers to actually create something worth showing off/respond to feedback and fix what was broken before launch.

Also I loved Squaresoft's demos, the presentation was great. Xenogears was pretty funny how it's demo broke the fourth wall.

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

noob question. Can someone give me a good explanation why flat screen hdmi crt's are shit for retro gaming? There is a mammoth one at the thrift store for $7 and I really want it. If not for Retro vidya, for modern stuff.
>>
>>3153494
All the HDMI CRTs I know of do scaling on the 240p signal to bring it up to a resolution that can be displayed by the ~33khz horizontal sync frequency of the flyback transformer (assuming this is a 1080i CRT).

It is scaled digitally in much the same way as a LCD would. HDMI CRTs are 'pixel-aware' in a way that the purely analog ones without small computers inside are not.
>>
>>3153502
It's a Toshiba Wide Screen. I checked the back, has all the connections you'd want plus 2 hdmi inputs.

If my retro games will have lag and look like balls on it, will my HD systems look good/better than a conventional hd tv?

Remember back in the 90s, when the Sega/Nintendo and Sonic/Mario rivalry was still a thing? Back when there were all those arguments over which was better, Sega or Nintendo, and which would come out on top?

God damn, Nintendo sure won the fuck out of that didn't they?

Hello everyone.

I would like to discuss the mother series. Let's share experiences, feels and general stuff that we lived when we played the games.

>>
Nothing but good memories with Mother games. And fairly recent memories because I first played the series in 2009, played them in release order.

Actually got into the series because of the music composer (Suzuki) and Itoi, as both of them wrote a song (Suzuki the music, and Itoi the lyrics) that's a favorite of mine. I went into the series without knowing of its cult following until some time after.
>>
Weird seeing there's still people who haven't played mother for the first time.

I just recently played mother. I started with earthbound but i just played a little cause my little brother fucked up my save files and after that i wasn't with that drive to play it.
The one i finished recently was mother 3.
Godamn, what a fuckin masterpiece!

I'm going to play mother 0 before earthbound so i can keep some linear development.
Shame that mother 3 gave me the Porky spoiler

Welcome to the 70s to early 90s Computer Gaming General. We talk about games and the hardware they were made for, either micro, mini or mainframe computers, desktop, tower or all in keyboard package, from the USA, Europe, Japan, or anywhere, if the platform came out before 1995.

Don't hesitate to share tips, your past (or present) experiences, your new machines, your already existing collection, emulation & hardware advises, as well as shots, ads & flyers, videos, interviews, musics, photos, that kind of stuff.

Allowed : Computers made from the 70s to Windows 3.x (Windows 95 if you want, but it's discouraged) and their games (of course), peripherals for these computers from any time period (MIDI expanders included)
Tolerated : Unknown, unsupported or not really popular post-95 stuff (BeOS, old Linux, stuff like this)
Allowed only with reluctance : Late 90s games and computers, Pentium PCs or more, PPC Macs and up, Windows 95 and later
Not allowed : Anything released after January 1, 2000. Fuck off.

Don't you sometimes feel depressed at how pointless getting good at a videogame is? All those wasted hours and you've essentially accomplished nothing.

>>3159353
we're all going to die anyways so anything we do means nothing
>>
>>3159353

Nah, not really. If you really like a game then getting good is just a way for you keep playing. If you enjoy it, it's worth it. It's as simple as that.
>>
That's why I don't force it. I know that if I dedicated religiously 1 or 2 hours a day at any given game, no matter how hard, I would become eventually good at it, even more if I spent time looking up online information about metagame, techniques, etc, as well as watching superplays or pro players and learn from them.

But that'd be a lot of time I'm not willing to spend in one game.

Sometimes I feel like 1cc games because I really like them and I enjoy learning them, all by myself.
But most of the times I'm fine if I can beat a game without dying too horribly too many times. If I didn't enjoy the game enough to keep playing it I'll jump to another one, and maybe I'll revisit that one some other day.

OK OP you are forgiven.

So, I dont understand

I'm level 21, something like 63% complete with 3 hours in the game, and apparently I beat it?

The first one of course. The pixels are supposed to be sharp. Why would they bother using vertical lines if they were intended to be blurred? They are obviously intended to be visible because that better represents falling water.
