Ultima Online
August 8th, 1997
Unbeknownst to all parties, when the server reset shortly before, the toggle that normally protected the devs was turned off — and Garriott didn’t enter the command to reactivate his invulnerability. Nobody, including Garriott, knew that Lord British was now open to attack in a game that was almost entirely PvP through-and-through.
Rainz wasn’t playing his magic character at the time, but some spur-of-the-moment pick-pocketing turned up the perfect weapon for assassination. This was aided by another fortuitous factor: The developers, anticipating lag at the castle, had turned off the guards who would otherwise have caught and killed Rainz for stealing.
“Luckily my character was a good thief who had high stealing skill,” he explained. “I desperately searched the backpacks of those around me and eventually came upon a fire field scroll. After that it was pretty simple: I just cast the scroll on the bridge and waited to see what would happen. Either [Lord British] or Blackthorne made the comment, ‘Hehe nice try!’ — I can’t recall exactly who. It was a humorous sight and I expected to be struck down by lightning or have some other evil fate befall me. Instead I heard a loud death grunt as British slumped to his death.”
The murder caught everyone off-guard, including British and his assassin. Someone took the above screenshot that became one of the most famous in MMO history, showing players’ disbelief as they shouted “HE DIED” and “LB is dead!!!”

I love this one.
Clearly like 15-30 people in all the pictures.
yet everyone always claims they were there.
fucking wackos.
>>3233161
Honestly this is sort of a bad thread.
theres not many, if any, more events like this that are famous that people actually claim they were at.
>>3233201
It was also during the Beta, not after launch.
I started playing October of 1997, and everyone talked about this. The game was GOAT MMO.
>Originally no karma penalties for killing with magic
>Don't like some asshole? Kill him and take the stuff he took hours to earn.
>Professions that actually took skill, resource management and time, not just stack clicking
>No vendors or auction systems, sell your wares in the trade window
>No ventrilo, curse or party chat. You used local spoken text, or could *emote*
>People actually roleplayed as their characters
>Female avatars were occasionaly actual women

10/10. I've never played another like it.
Fun as fuck.

We finally have a release date for the English iOS/Android versions of Romancing SaGa 2. It'll be coming out May 26 for 17.99.
I'm pretty excited about giving a SaGa game an honest try. Anyone else planning to buyor obtainthis game?
>>3226916
Is that faggot working on the SNES version still or is he going to abandon it?
Nice! I didn't even know about this. Thanks anon.

No prob. And the PR Twitter account also mentions opening a teaser site for Romancing SaGa 3, so it looks like we may have an official version of that coming soon as well.

I don't feel like there is enough attention given to this game as it is largely overshadowed by System Shock 2, so talk SS1 ITT.
What level are you on? Favorite enemies, weapons? Why do you prefer this to SS2?
Are you hype for the remake? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okPLF9Ad9nsSS3 this year maybe?
>>3220934
>Why do you prefer this to SS2?
Lots of reasons. Off the top of my head:
>SHODAN behaves more threateningly
>level design and puzzles are deeper
>music and sound direction are better
>no annoying random weapon jamming
>MUCH more engaging hacking minigame
>no silly RPG mechanics (PSI spells)
I feel like the only reason people only like SS2 is because it's on Windows and it plays like a typical FPS by default.
>>3220953
I also find SS1 a much more enjoyable experience, probably because SS2 spooks me out too much to have fun. SS1 very comfy to just sit back and sink a few hours into and gets very addictive.
>>3220953
>no annoying random weapon jamming
The jamming wasn't random, it was based on a number indicating the condition of your weapon, but the problem is the weapons degrade so damn quickly.
I am surprised at how far ahead of its time this game was. It was only a year after DOOM, but had stuff like the energy mechanic, alternate ammo types for weapons, enemies that responded differently to different types of damage, hacking minigames, huge and complex levels, an inventory system, audio logs, looting etc. That's more deep and complex than a lot of games released in the present day.
It's a shame the original controls were so bad it could have such an impact on the gaming industry

Talks about Princess Maker 2 made me finally install that game.
I am amazed how the game is rich on such limited CPU.
I am now in posession of a 1040STF, and I have no idea what I'm doing.
Any software recommendations, particularly in music and publishing software?
And can you reliably format a standard PC disk as a 720KB DS disk to use with these boxes? I can't seem to find a conclusive answer anywhere, I've got fdrawcmd and FloImg already.
>>3207408
The format used on the 1040STF drives is the same as a PC except for a different file system. Also you can't use 1.44MB disks, you'll need 720k disks.
So apparently Retronaughts is in the top 5 of popular video game podcasts. That's pretty surprising for a show dedicated to something most of us here seem to think is pretty niche. What do you think it says about the state and popularity of retro gaming overall?
>>3206748
Other than Giant Bomb, what other popular video game podcasts are still around? I think it says more about the state of Video game podcasts more than Retronauts.
>>3206761
You might have a bit of a point with there. There are tons of them out there, but not many popular ones anymore. I miss Joystiq. Polygon is a shitty, shitty substitute.
>>3206748
How are these guys? I never really listen to video game podcasts but a retro one sounds cool.
Did I do good? Got this at the local mall smack dab in the backwoods of Nowhere, Kentucky. I thought it was a decent price.
Also, recent acquisition thread.
you could've downloaded it for free on the internet
just youtube'd it and it looks fucking gay too
>He fell for the "Fantasy game by Squaresoft" meme

Which had the best game design?
http://www.strawpoll.me/10311165
I haven t finished 2 yet...
Speaking strictly map design, Fusion had the best. They managed to make a convincing layout of what a biological research laboratory in space would feel like. The other games... it's just kinda random.
Metroid Fusion is one of my favorite games. That being said...
NOT RETRO
FUCK OFF
I decided to play Ninja Gaiden on NES, as I've heard it is great and even better than the Master System version. I've played the MS version a lot, it's one of my favourites on the system.
So I started playing the NES version and I was disgusted. This version has clunky, unresponsive controls compared to the MS version, far worse graphics, worse music, and the powerups are odd and rarely useful.
Why do people prefer the NES version? It's shit.
>>3242197(You)
>>3242197
I love the MS version too but it is such a wildly different game, you can't compare it to the NES games.
The MS NG feels more responsive and modern than the NES couterpart, which makes it a cakewalk.
The NES ones have tight control and more sadistic level design, so people who love challenge will swear by those.
I feel that both have their merit.
>>3242197
Arcade NG > SMS NG > NES trilogy
It's a shame the Megadrive game got shitcanned, looked really cool and a return to form to the arcade game, you know, back to the belt scroller style.
Good, bad or just plain hilarious. Let's show our recent finds.
I am not sure what this falls under, but it is something:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/gameboy-macro-micro-gba-/272252904575?hash=item3f6389a47f:g:KHwAAOSwDV1XREY-
Redundantly called the "gameboy macro micro gba" This seller has created a GBA using the lower half of a DS lite. modifications have been made to the case and the end result gives it a very "unique" look.

Isn't that just half a DS? topkek
What does /vr/ think about Arc the Lad series, more specifically 1&2, and with more of the brunt being focused on 2? I'd say one of the most underrated retro JRPGs out there/
>>3240748
What makes it so great? Hows random encounters?
I have a friend who really liked it but I could never get into it.
it's so god damn fucking long
So /vr/ I had two questions
What's better (or rather what do you like), the original Mario Bros Arcade game or the remake on the GBA that came with super Mario Bros 2 (I know GBA isn't Retro yet, I just didn't play it and need insight)
And second, which game do you like more; DK arcade or the original Mario Bros arcade?
Thanks
The main thing Mario Bros has over DK is co op. iirc the GBA version is not accurate, gameplay-wise, to the original.
>>3240093
Thanks. Do you know if a co-op mod exists for the DK arcade game by any chance? Not asking for a link, just if you know if it exists
bump for opinions
What games do you guys consider to be the must play games for the Sega Master System?
Zillion.

Phantasy Star for RPG
Golden Axe Warrior if you like Zelda
Wonder Boy III
Castle of Illusion
Master of Darkness

Oh man, I remember that one, really should finish it
>Master of Darkness
Castlevenia clone?
Which is your favorite?
http://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Famicom_Color_Palette
Any of them except RGB which stands out like a sore thumb
>>3239780
What would the Wii VC Palette look like if the brightness were turned up to normal? That would probably be perfect.
>>3239780
Red Brick Master Race.
Shit tier emulators use purple brick palettes as default.
