To what extent does /vr/ import?
Does anyone else here ever import games that were otherwise released in your region, only because the import version is actually more affordable? I find myself doing this more and more lately. It doesn't frankly matter to me since I have some rudimentary understanding of Japanese, although less text-intensive games tend to be in English regardless of region.
not retro but shadow tower abyss is pritty gud
For PCE and Sega Saturn, I mostly import because it's cheaper. Buying PCE has also got me to a play several Japanese language RPGs (action RPGs though) which I doubt I would have played otherwise. Stuff like Brandish, Popful Mail, and the like.
Often times buying western-released retro isn't worth it given price gouging, especially if games aren't text heavy to begin with.

Fan translation is better and you don't have to buy it at all.
Sorry for making another Saturn thread, I would've posted in one of those but they all consist of console-war shitflinging.
I'm about to buy my own Saturn, should I go for the Model 1 (oval buttons) or Model 2 (round buttons like picrelated)? I know the difference isn't as drastic between revisions compared to the Genesis, but I want to get the best I can for my money. More specifically, which model has the better laser to read burnt CD-Rs?
>>3303412
>I know the difference isn't as drastic between revisions compared to the Genesis
this is where you are wrong, the model 2 is a cut-down Chinese made cheap piece of shit. go for the model 1.
>>3303412
>More specifically, which model has the better laser to read burnt CD-Rs?
If that's your main concern, model 2s have been released later, so they have the least beat up lenses.
There isn't really a big difference between the two though.
>>3303413
>shitting on model 2
model 1 actually are more prone to damage due to internal capacitors leakage, doesn't happen with model 2.
Whoa.... so this is the power.... of the Saturn.
>>3303286
What if Saturn VF3 is in Shenmue 3???
>>3303286
Looks like some emulated shit to me.
>>3303286
Sega makes me want to puke.
Ugh, fuck.
How is it that people have working 3DOs, Saturns and other early optical media consoles? Shouldn't the optical units be burned out by now? And how are the games even in working condition decades later? Optical media is very prone to oxidation. Although the quality of the media plays a large role in this, I can't imagine discs manufactured so long ago will continue to hold up for much longer. (Come to think of it, shouldn't audio CDs from the early '90s also be suffering from degradation by now?)
The lasers can go kaput but as long as optical drives are still manufactured (and they aren't likely to go away for a long time) you will be able to replace your drive mech.
>>3303143
Because Saturn has a great optical drive compared to the shitty PSX.
>t. someone with no vintage cd hardware
I'm a little suspicious this might be bait though due to specifically mentioning disc formats that do have notable oxidation.
Ya'll got any more of them side-scrollers? recommendations plz
-_-;
The adventure island series is magnificent. Give 'em a shot.
I also recommend Gimmick!
>>3303038
You should try beltscrollers.
What are some good N64 games?
http://vsrecommendedgames.wikia.com/wiki/Nintendo_64
Anyone mess with this here? Finished day one and enjoying it so far.
>>3302443
Why is this game so highly regarded? It was just a The Great Escape clone. A great one sure, but it's not like it invented the wheel or something.
>>3302464
Actually it is quite open for its time. It brings together elements from rpgs and point & click together.
>>3302473
Just like The Great Escape. But don't mind me, I'm a Spaniard myself and I actually like the game. I guess I'm just tired of underages talking about La abadÃa del crimen like it was some sort of revolutionary holy grail that put all the other software from that era to shame.
ITT: Games that only sucked because of a few flaws
There are bad games that cannot be redeemed at all, and then there are games that only sucked because of a few flaws. Let us discuss those games. I'll start:
The Adventures of Dr. Franken. I love many things about this game like the art style, the enemy design, and the funky music. But they screwed it up by:
>making Dr. Franken move too fast
>the fucked up controls
>some of the level designs sucked
If not for this, it would probably have been a pretty good game.
>>3301305
Take the slowdown out of Contra Force and it could have been a masterpiece.
>>3301372
If there was a limit in the agree-o-meter, i would reach that limit
>Multiple characters, each one has their own loadout of weapons
>You can either bro-op or call for 10 seconds a CPU player to help you, which has a fuckton of commands to go by, like he would cover you from behind or go foward
>Music was as excellent as other contra titles [ So excellent, a piece of it made it to Contra Rebirth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJFR3s2LweI ]
>Had a mix of side scroller and top-down levels, as fun as Super C or Operation C's top down levels
>Gradius-like upgrade progression, which was cool.
>FUCKING SLOW DOWN RUINS THE ENTIRE FUCKING GAME.
Seriously, i played this game a lot of times and i can say that if the fucking slowdown wasn't there, the game could've been on the same tier as The alien wars or Hard Corps
Why is it so ridiculously rare and expensive?
It's rare because few copies were printed & sold.
It's expensive because it's rare & demanded.
>>3301141
Because it has a waifu on the cover.
Whatever happened to Klonoa?
Mediocre sequels.
>>3301097
>Klonoa 2 sold like shit.
>Klonoa Wii sold like shit.
>Series wet farts into death.
>>3301098
This.
The character has a cool interesting concept and the PSX game is great, but was that just it.
I am building an emulation box, a computer dedicated to running emulators in a front end connected to my TV. Does anyone else do this?
I am currently using a Super Small Form Factor Core 2 Duo machine I grabbed at a thrift store for $30. It's a Dell Optiplex 755 with a 2.3ghz Dual Core CPU running Linux Mint. This unit is a nice choice because it has a built in speaker and it's pretty loud.
I know Raspberry Pis are the popular choice but they are pretty underpowered and you cant get good performance with some games unless you overclock. I get similar capabilities with this machine. with the gln64 plugin, I get full speed but warping textures on games, and glide64 just runs slowly. I can't run PS2, and PS1 has graphical glitching in the one game I tested (Resident Evil Directors Cut Dual Shock), so I am counting out DC and other 6th gen systems.
Any tips to make this better? I can upgrade the CPU but not the GPU.
>>3298623
Yeah ive got a small box hooked up to a crt.
>Any tips to make this better?
Intel desktop is the only way to go.
Just use a standard (although preferably small form factor) desktop with VGA out. You'll get leagues better emulation performance than you would with something like a Pi, even if you decide to refurbish an old single-core legacy Pentium desktop.
How do I hook up a pc to a crt properly?
r8 my SMB level 1 run
>>3298506
I lol'd at the end
>>3298537
Also 0/10
>>3298506
I'd call it more of a jog.
Am I ever going to get this game for a decent price, my god saturn scalping is at its worst
>>3297442
It is on the Xbox 360 for just $15USD, sometimes on sale for $5. I got it back in the day for $55 but the teeth on the case holding the disc got smashed in through shipping. You pay way less now than I did back then.
>>3297442
No, but at least you can download and play it. Saturn prices seem to be on the rise lately, I don't know why. I'm thinking of picking up Cyberbots while it's still reasonable.
I burned a CD-R with it and it works perfectly.
Playing backups on Saturn is now easier than ever either with modchip or pseudosaturn.
What went wrong? Was it the fact that it was underpowered for the price? Was it the fact that it was released so soon after the 32x debacle? Was it the lack of 3rd party games? Or all of the above?
I wonder how they could have screwed this system up as far as what has made it fail in the shadows of Nintendo and Sony. They could have totally redeemed themselves after the 32x. I mean it wasn't all that bad, it was just completely pointless.
Did they just botch the whole design/tech of this console? I know there are great games out there in retrospect, but there's still a lot I wonder about this era.
It didn't have blast processing.
>>3297197
Genesis popularity was built on Sonic, MK, and Sports.
Sony had MK3 and Sport Games while Sega was just putting out arcade games. To many people, PS1 felt like the true Genesis successor.
Well they pushed the release of the console forward for no reason, fucked up the schedule of many devs, fucked over the other devs like EA who caused a public fuss and created a bad image.
Finally they released it only 2 weeks before Sony's curb stomp of a console which had been hyped like the second coming of jesus.
Why the hate for All Stars?
It unifies the games with a consistent look while retaining all of the same movement mechanics and feel the originals had.
>>3296595
>retaining all of the same movement mechanics and feel the originals had
No, the physics are off.
honestly i just loved it for battle mode on SMB3. would take a flash drive to school with 2 ps3 controllers and play on school computers with friends on lunch.
>>3296595
>retaining all of the same movement mechanics and feel the originals had
No. The physics were imperfect.
