Mostly due to poor promotion when compared to Lucario.
Zoroark was near impossible to find ingame in B/W, while you were handed a Riolu egg during the story in D/P/Pt., they also starting promoting Lucario way before it came out and overall did a way better job promoting Lucario while fucking up when promoting Zoroark.

The distribution was just one factor.

There were many others.

- Lucario's portrayal in his movie vs. Zoroark's portrayal in hers. The movie barely focuses on Zoroark, and she doesn't talk. Most of the focus is given to Zorua, who does talk.
- Lucario has a unique (except for Cobalion who didn't exist yet) type combination of Fighting/Steel while Zoroark is yet another mono-Dark type.
- Overall, Zoroark just wasn't as appealing to the kiddies as Lucario is. Zoroark had replaced Lucario on Pokemon Sunday, but due to demand from the audience, it was booted off and replaced with Lucario again.

Why would they do that? I thought they were some kind of cross gen counterparts to begin with so I assumed they had equal BSTs.

Assuming it can't evolve while Illusion is active. I think it should have some kind of recovery ability. That way, Zoroark isn't fighting handicapped. Also, I hope it's a Dark/Ghost type.

It'd be best if it just got a typical offense boosting ability, like Sheer Force. It'd work best in tandem with Illusion on it's own-- popping a mega out of an unsuspecting pokemon would justify the ability's use enough.

Not that Zoroark as is is great or anything, but most people have no fucking idea how to use it. They think that they need to somehow trick the opponent the entire match, when in reality you only need 1 turn of fooling the opponent to make the ability worth it. The issue stems from Zoroark's subpar offensive presence. It's just too average in combat. A mega with high offensive ability to take advantage of Dark STAB would find it's worth, easy.

Another thing people don't get about Zoroark is that they think you always have to use it with pokemon that use the same moves as it. One of the best ways to use this thing is to disguise it as the most threatening pokemon on your team then luring out and killing that pokemon's counters for it.

I'm kind of hoping that if it does get a mega, it's a Dark/Fairy typing. It would be a unique typing, and more importantly would be a great reference to European folklore about "faeries:" fey tricksters and shapeshifters who love playing pranks, often through the use of illusions.

Might not have any moves to benefit from the added STAB-bonus potential, but Fairy doesn't have many straight-damage moves in the first place.

Zoroark just needs to have a wide movepool. It should be able to run things like GigaDrain/Energy Ball, Water Pulse, Flash Cannon, Aura Sphere, Psychich/Psyshock, Sludge Bomb, etc. No need to be very powerful, just type diversity.

Just with that, it could be used to fool the enemy easier. You could pass for a lot of Pokémon. Currently, you have Extrasensorial, Flamethrower and Focus Blast I think? At most you can pass for a Chandelure with Flamethrower but it's not very useful.

Dark/Fairy would make more sense, as it'd still bring the typings of magical and mischievous into one. Ghost makes no sense, as it doesn't have a connection with the dead or death to begin with.
