I think it'll be better if they become friends first or at least as close to friends as Alan's autism would allow. Ash is friendly enough to strike a conversation with anyone that interests him. It'll be like the setup for the COTD episodes except the guy turns out to be the enemy in the end.

Seeing Charizard and its owner having a mega stone can spark his interest to talk to the guy. Alan is hard to approach but as Manon showed, if you can get past the harsh exterior, he'll eventually open up a little. Alan also used to be happy and enthusiastic like Ash so I think he'll be reminded of his old days.

Then the reveal happens that Alan needs to capture Puni from Boni and shit hits the fan.

I think that since they both know Sycamore, that can be the thing that starts their friendship. Alan has a soft spot for Sycamore and he was the one that found the Gible in the first place. Knowing that Ash helped Sycamore and Garchomp and was also willing to die for his pokemon, Alan will actually get along with him at the start. Until the mission from Lysandre comes of course.

So, openings are never 100% accurate but would Ash losing to two mega's really cause him to fall into a depressive state? He's lost harder before, and if that's the case I don't see why he wouldn't think to bring back his Pokemon than CAN mega evolve to compete with them.

Unless shit goes down when they reach Terminus Cave (presumably in episode 8) and they're forced to backtrack to Anistar and Dendemille and then go back to Lumiose through Route 16, I think they'll get through Terminus Cave, get to Couriway (where a Tripokalon we already know about probably takes place), Snowbelle/Pokémon Village where Ash fights Wulfric, and finally back to Lumiose through Routes 21 and 22. Ash was seen both in the previous OP and in this one in a room that looks like the interior of Lysandre Labs under Lumiose City and Perfect Zygarde's cloud-piercing beam also originates from Lumiose, so it'd make sense for the climax to take place there.
