It's the same reason we still have Captain Falcon or Ness despite F-Zero and Earthbound having no relevance in the current gaming market. Smash has undoubtedly done more to popularize those games than the franchises ever managed on their own.

Jigglypuff was one of those early-year things Pokemon did, but eventually dropped. It feels very much like a product of the 90's; that derivative of grunge that gave us the 'gross' factor on networks like Nick and YTV, or the edginess you see in Nintendo ads from that era. Jigglypuff was essentially the Bart Simpson of Pokemon, and much like Bart, no longer holds the same appeal to kids.

It really makes me wish Banjo could have made that cut. We might still have that fucker in the game to this day.
