X/Y would have been infinitely better without the fucking tag alongs.
Firstly they make it VERY hard to project onto your character because the game just tells you that you're now friends with these random assholes and gives you a slap on the butt and makes you travel with them.
Also they make the story so linear that you lose the illusion that you have any control of the adventure.
Also they hold your hand so fucking hard you don't get to find anything out for yourself. I'm not just talking game mechanics but story elements too. The experience feels cheapened once you realize very little would be different if you weren't there.
Tierno and Calem/Serena are easily the worst too. I have no problem with a trainer obsessed with dancing but I'm just not sure why he was given a Pokedex. It just seems too specific. Calem/Serena just make awful rivals. The best rivals in the series were great because they were always one step ahead of you and you were only a little better than them even though they'd never admit that. But Calem/Serena are always one step behind you and never miss a chance to remind you how superior you are to them.
I like how Trevor would compete with you by comparing your Pokedex to his instead of actually battling. But his presence just feel ultimately unecessary.
Shauna is the only tolerable one character wise. She wouldn't have been a very good rival though.

This is depressingly true. I remember that I was quite interested at the beginning of XY, but it became clear pretty quickly that none of it was going anywhere.
Here's what I would have liked to see

In the end the power of friendship would make them see the error of their ways, this is a pokemon game still, but it would have been a good plot development for them. As it is, I just feel guilty 6-0ing them every time they want a battle.

Earlier this week I had the amazing opportunity to spend the day at Nintendo of America's Redwood City, California location. Of course, I was forced to sign some paperwork on confidentiality and leave my phone by the door, but I saw some great things while I was there. If you've ever been there recently, you know how comfortable the setting is. There was quite a bit of information regarding the future Pokémon property, particularly Sun & Moon. I've blurred out my name and other personal information so nothing can link back to myself or my family.
Feel free to ask any questions regarding the Sun & Moon games.(I must add that since I was at a NOA location, I don't have nearly as much information I would if I'd been at their Kyoto location or even the Game Freak development location.)

There are ways it could be done poorly and well. I think the best way to do it is one game has less gyms or no gyms because it focuses on the villianous team. The other game has no villians but a lot of gyms and more rival development.

I considered this possibility for a second, actually.
Sun would be targeted to the same group XY was, while Moon would be targeted to the same group BW2 was. Sun would have a standard pokemon story while Moon would have a more complex story, which fans would think means better but ends up meaning absolutely horrid.

You guys are missing the economic picture. Film franchises exist to shill the branded products throug a nation stage. Action figures posters etc.
In Pokemon's case, their primary product is the core series games. There is no way Nintendo would have a high profile. major mation picture that isnt serving to sell there primary product. Now, unless Ninendo is going to do a second round of g1 remakes for around 2020 or so(which, although unlikely is possible) it is most finacially logical that Nintendo will base the film on Generation 8(or 9 depending on lead time)so they can have a full multimedia push. If they play their carda right they can even do simetaneous development, like Transformers with toys or Ratchet and Clank just did, or Disney' s whole Star Wars strategy with the films,comics and cartoons, where the lore is developed by a core team that is diffused across all products. Especially sinxe Nintendo is the one pushing for it.
Heck given film franchizes and pokemon gens both take 3-4 years between installments, we could even have every new core series release come along with a film.
Maybe even american made cartoon by WB(nintendo likes Warners)
Its good strategy on all parts as WB like most studios has shifted to a franchise based model, with WB using DC,Lego and Harry Potter films as pillars of its buisness plan. With the new Hannah Barbara Cinimatic Universe and now Pokemon it is a ripe multimedia platform.
Nostalgia is simple, the name pokemon, some iconic mons like Pikachu and Charizard, thats enough to bring in that crowd, the idea that you need to autistically rip the old series instead of getting its feel ks foolish. Its not like the multi billion dollar Transformers juggernaut is a g1 adaption, though it shares some elements.
All in all I am looking forward to these new artistic possibilities
