I believe the general consensus is that they aren't getting rid of Mega evolutions, but rather individual Mega stones for each Mega evolution. That way you don't have to find 50-plus additional items. There'll be a single Mega Stone, and it'll work on any Pokemon that can Mega evolve once unlocked.
