I fucking hate Klefki, I think it is the stupidest design in the series by a nice margin, but I'm tired of seeing the same fucking retorts every thread. Instead of defending Klefki, people just throw other pokemon under the bus. I'm going to through most of them and explain why I think inanimate object mons were mostly done naturally or with finesse up until like, gen 3.

Slime monsters are an extremely established JRPG trope to the point where it would be weird if Pokemon didn't have a slime monster. Same goes for robot monsters, and magnemite

Voltrob is a chest monster, another huge JRPG trope. I'm open to criticism on its design itself, but conceptually it is perfectly fine, and one of the only pokemon whose design actually affects gameplay. Putting voltorb on the same level as kelfki is laughable.

Exeggcute is seeds though, see almost every pokedex entry. Obviously its design was inspired by eggs, someone at gamefreak realized some similarities between seeds and eggs, but seeds are fine.

Elemental constructs that are purely that type are fine. It's uninspired, and I'm usually not a huge fan of the following, but it makes sense that the rock type would have rocks with eyeballs, or the ice type would have an icicle with eyeballs.

Ghosts are kind of understandable as inanimate object mons. You know, seeing as how they possess objects, or are malevolent spirits who form themselves for the purpose of fucking over humans.

And now we have Klefki. The fucking worst. I have no respect for a pokemon who the designer almost assuredly was coming up on a deadline and looked to his pockets for inspiration. >but fairies are pranksters, and they love to steal stuff! WHY DO YOU HAVE TO LOOK LIKE A KEYCHAIN TO STEAL KEYS! WHAT THE FUCK DID KLEFKI DO BEFORE KEYS WERE EVEN INVENTED! Klefki can go die, and be deleted for the game forever. I’m fucking butthurt.

If Klefki were not holding keys, the "ring" that you call a keychain would clearly be arms that extend from its torso.
Klefki's in-game model frequently shows it opening its arms as proof of this. Before keys existed, Klefki just stole whatever it liked and could carry.
It's not unusual to have a thieving/mischievous fairy in folk stories, so I'm not sure why you're complaining.

It's not a great design, don't get me wrong, but it's not brainless nor without its charm.
