So, I've been having a huge urge to play Pokemon again (not played one since Black/White).
So, after thinking about it I was pretty set on getting either SS or HG but the news that you cant use the GTS system anymore just really bummed me out. It feels like any progress or work you do in that game is for nothing as you cant transfer any of them over.
At least the Pokemon Y/B/R games on the VC allow you to use the Pokemon Bank.
Can you guys maybe give me your thoughts - is it worth bothering with? I loved Gen 2 - best games in the series imo.

Figured I'd run this by you guys before I make a more formal version.
The first time you play a Pokemon game, try to make it as fun an experience as possible. Pick the starter you like, catch the pokemon you want, and freely ignore the advice of others. The point of an initial playthrough is to indulge in the magic and wonder of a new world with new Pokemon.
The idea of the REplay is to explore more of the depth that game has to offer, getting into the gritty details, exploring things you may have missed and trying the experience in a new way. There are things like Nuzlocke challenges to give skilled players a hard time, but Nuzlocke discourages risk-taking and we're trying to make the most of a replay, so here are some guidelines I like to use.
1) PLAN YOUR PARTY IN ADVANCE AND ONLY CATCH THE ONES YOU NEED
This one takes some strategy and knowledge of the world, but a preplanned team tends to offer new opportunities and balance. Try to pick pokemon you have never used before: That Starter you laughed at, that pokemon you overlooked, or perhaps even one you really hate. Getting out of your comfort zone and avoiding the simple, user-friendly Pokemon the game tends to offer to new players (Regional bugs/birds, ground/water type, etc) give you a new set of strategies to work around and you might even discover a new favorite.
Try to make it a group of pokemon that you can accumulate fairly early (Within the first four to five badges, maybe) and only catch the ones you need, avoiding "Filler" whenever possible. By properly controlling your party size and going through the early game with 2~4 pokemon rather than 6, you will be able to distribute more exp to each of them, making them level up faster and avoiding the tedious grinding that you had much more patience for during your first playthrough while everything was still new.

2) EXPLORE, USING GUIDES AND MAPS AS APPLICABLE.
Odds are you missed a lot of fun stuff during your first playthrough, such as that secret spot where wild Lapras show up, that cave hidden under the bike route, or all of Mt. Mortar. There are also games with several viable routes through them, with Generations 1 and 2 famously having forks in the road that let you tackle the next set of challenges in any order you like.
Since you've played the game through once, pulling up online maps and guides are perfectly fine to help you uncover what you missed. You paid for the game, after all, and you're entitled to experience all of its contents.
And sometimes you should just stop and smell the Roses. Appreciate the aesthetics and music used in the game's design. People had to work hard to put that famous Nintendo polish into these games, so taking some time to admire that work can be all the more worth it.
At least that's how I enjoy a replay, and I honestly probably could have fit that in one post. Anybody else have any ideas?

I used to challenge myself by doing mono-type runs or Nuzlockes or unevolved runs or whatever but I got tired of that and started using OP's method. You can carefully plan your playthrough for an optimized run or you can get out of your comfort zone, try using some Pokemon you might never use otherwise. If the game you're playing doesn't have a post-game, try exploring the world, find new caves, new passes, new items etc (I'm not a big WiFi guy, I love the games because you get to explore unknown places, have pets, etc).
Just enjoy yourself, enthrall yourself in the game and make the most out of it
