Firered/leafgreen are remakes of red/blue for gba. Comes with enhanced graphics and all that jazz, but you still can't catch mew or the version exclusive pokemon.
As for the anime, I wouldn't recommend watching it personally.

Think about pokémon from Gen 1 through Gen 5. We had mechanics focused more on the pokémon itself, in his abilities, natural potention and all that, not much on the trainer. Now, the trainer-pokémon relationship is more focused on it, with the exception of Primal Reversion. For me, it was more natural before Gen 6.
I feel like we're on other monster franchises territory with these mechanics (only missing Fusions/Synchro, but Bond Phenomenon is pretty close) and even kinda on card game territory too and honestly, it feels gimmicky and not solid changes for the franchise. But what do you think, /vp/?
