I really like Golem. It's a very simple design that is not busy and easy to draw. People love spherical designs like on Rowlet, but Golem had the same design 20 years ago! People should still love Golem's sphere shape. Golem's shape and appearance match its type though I thought the Rock/Ground multitypes were are a little overdone in gen 1, if there was a small retroactive change I'd like to see Golem be a rock-type alone. Golem is a boulder pokemon and boulders are known to roll down hills, Rollout should have been Golem's signature move. When we think of Rollout we think of Whitney's pink cow. A cow! How is a cow supposed to roll itself in a ball at high speeds? Have you ever seen cow do that? To make matters worse in the anime it shows Miltank jumping (ever see a cow jump?) and then doing toe touches! Have you ever seen a cow do that? And then Miltank just rolls on its back forever. So unbelievable. But Golem, just look at him! He can tuck his head in and easily roll his spherically shaped body. It makes perfect sense. Rollout for Golem!

Golems design doesn't make any sense.

How does a rock with (white)eeyes and two arm evolve into a bigger rock with 4 arms, then into a slightly bigger rock that loses it extra arms and turns into a red eyed lizard man inside of a boulder? It doesn't even get shell smash.

Golem was a mistake. It should have ended with Graveller.

You mean best or in terms of power levels?

I've always liked the lore of Gen 2. There's enough mystery around Ho-oh, Lugia, and the beast trio for them to be interesting, but they still feel like natural creatures.

Gen 3 you start getting into nature deity territory, Gen 4 has literal Pokegods, and from Gen 5 on we've gotten into the abstract shit like truth, ideals, life, death, etc. And on the opposite side, Gen 1 really didn't have any lore at all. The legendary birds were just natural creatures, Mewtwo was an escaped lab experiment, and Mew was just a mysterious creature from South America.

As for gameplay that's super subjective, though anyone who says anything pre-Physical/Special split is being heavily influenced by nostalgia.
