Raw and undeveloped theory, but what if Sun and Moon takes place in a different timeline where Z-crystals are the counter part to gems? The Z-crystals are said to convert z energy to power up a pokémon's type of move. If you think about it, gems do the same, just that they power up just the move with the same type of Gem while Z-crystals power up a move with the same type of move and crystal, and turn it into a super powerful attack.
