Agatha died some time between RBY and GSC. Although this is never explicity mentioned, she trains ghost type pokemon and pretty much all her dialogue is about how old she is. Given that RBY were obviously made with future sequels in mind, it's clear that GF intentionally wanted to make it seem like she died.

That is really unfortunate. I am sorry for that loss. I had a similar occurence back when I had Blue. I raised my Blastoise to Lv. 100 without Gamesharks and other methods (MissingNo.), then my brother got mad at me for something and erased my save file out of spite. Even though I wouldn't be able to transfer anyways, still hurts. So I feel your pain.
