Personally, I keep wireless off until I want to do online shit, gives me better battery life. So I keep Amie on-screen at most times as I find it easier to tune out the bottom screen when I don't need it.

I agree. For Christ sake, when they introduced PSS, I thought it was actually a huge step for Nintendo in general. It wasn't fully the best online experience, but it was an amazing transition for Pokemon. GameFreak in typical GF fashion got cute with it and forgot one of their best QoL features - this along with EV training.
I was really excited for Gen 7, but its been tempered.
