I'm struggling with this as well. I've known about IVs and EVs since gen. 3 and finally tried making a competitive team in gen. 5. I got stuck and gave up and here I am again in gen. 7 trying to make this work. I have no idea where to start so I just watch other players on Showdown. Yesterday I finally created a team but I doubt it's really all that good.

Right now we're still in an evolving meta, so experimentation is fruitful but can be misleading. Something you like that works now can suddenly find itself being checked by something way more popular.

I think the outer spiked starfish is really cool but Toxapex's face expanding on the wild array of teeth and its lower body looking incomplete just looks wrong to me.

I didn't like Mareanie's teeth either but at least it was just a few, and it had a complete-looking body under it.

I think it also has to do with Toxapex's body reminding me of Shuppet, which I dislike both for the association with another unrelated Pokemon and for the fact that Shuppet was intentionally as it resembled a puppet sheet rag at the ends. Seeing as Toxapex is an animal-based Pokemon, it looks off to have that trait.
