Playing the Trading Card Game Online is probably a good start. It has a single-player mode too.

The Game Boy game is very easy by comparison and lets you get away with whatever strategy you feel like. The real card game doesn't really do that.

Prepare for people online to be using ridiculously expensive overpowered decks that you need thousands of packs to be able to compete with, and people at IRL Pokémon Leagues to be the type of people who've probably gone to jail for child rape but are too autistic to understand why that's not a good thing.

This is not even close to true*. There are several viable cheaper decks and even decks that run 4 Shaymin-EX (expensive staple, unfortunately) only cost a couple of hundred packs.

When you first start you will have mostly junk and will kind of have to make do with theme deck matches. The good thing is that most of the expensive cards (like Shaymin) are pretty versatile and go in pretty much any deck; so once you get hold of them you're pretty much set..
