Depends on if you mean VILLAIN or ANTAGONIST, because one defies the moral conventions of the setting and the other is in opposition to the main character(s). A good villain, whether they are the main character or not, requires a good reason to be a villain first and foremost. Damaged goods that pass off psychological problems as their reason tend rake in more hate than love for being edgy, and I believe this fact would not change unless there was an incredible deal of research and emphasis on the problem and the character. Your villain needs the NEED to be a villain, it is a necessity that they act this way. Or if it is simply a matter of perspective, multiple lenses to be observed with. The degree or ability to relate to their villainy is entirely up the the author.

A good antagonist, however, is a much broader spectrum that merely requires a person or thing that is against the flow of the plot. They are jutting spires from the river, redirecting flow suddenly and threatening to become dams altogether. A good one is convincing and understandable, a poor one is easily identified as "The Antagonist" without much of a second thought as to why. Using the analogy I just made up right now, a good antagonist would be a boulder in the river. It is covered with moss, tiny fish and crustaceans make its underside a home. Erosion effects it, there are natural colors and edges to its form. Now imagine the shitty antagonist as a big, ugly, heavy plastic cube that's just dropped right in. It's even got the proper flat shade of color that the protagonist hates.

They don't do anything wrong in sapphire sure, but if you play ruby they fuck up all the shit.And in emerald they tried to make a volcano erupt, knowing full well that it could destroy lavaridge town and all those living there, and steal rocket fuel from mossdeep space center.
