So why did Sun and Moon go back to naming the protagonists after their respective games? We've had real names for the characters ever since Crystal with Kris, even the gen 2 remakes renamed Gold as Ethan. Why the sudden drawback?

I've never played a Pokémon game in my entire life and I only saw a few of the TV episodes and movies including the very first episode. I was confused just what exactly the games were like until I learned that they were essentially just RPGs. They sound like fun when I was described them by another community, so I have a few questions. I am only really familiar with the most common and most meme'd. e.g. Pikachu, Meowth, Squirter, Charmander, Mudkip, Slowpoke, and Abra.
Is there a greater continuity between all of the Pokémon games?
Are all of the games essentially the same thing in terms of structure and gameplay mechanics?
Do the colors and letters in the titles have significance?
Are there or are there any plans to announce a title for the Nintendo Switch?
What Pokémon games do you recommend for a beginner or someone who is completely new to the Pokémon franchise?
I apologize for being a massive Slowpoke, but the games do look like fun the more I check them out. Not sure why my interest in this franchise is growing despite never having any when I was a child in the 90's.
One more question: Pokémon are essentially just animals, right?
I felt the pic is greatly related.

This is the first time I've seen so many people hate on a new Pokémon game announcement. What's funny Is that the majority wanted these new games for the Switch which would have been a fucking mistake financially speaking.
I genuinely believe Pokémon Ultra Sun/Moon could become the first Pokémon games to not sell THAT good.

Pokken DX is already do better preorder wise than USUM is. They're expecting people to pay up another 40$ for a copy of Sun and Moon again after it was one of the worst Pokemon games ever made for a system where pirating games is incredibly easy. It's a huge mistake especially since third versions/squeals have always sold far lower amounts than the original games.
The only reason making them for Switch would have been a mistake is because Nintendo can't produce them fast enough to meet demand. If it weren't for that still making them for 3DS would have been retarded because these game aren't going to pass 10 million units sold.

Why does Gamefreak insist on shoehorning a story and silly gimmicks into the main Pokemon games? You'd think that the premise is compelling enough, and that you could just build upon it instead of adding tons of unnecessary dialogue and silliness.
Is it somehow more difficult for them to make a game that's straightforward and sincere, where you just go from town to town collecting monsters and leveling instead of fighting "Villain Teams" and "Rescuing so-and-so from this-and-that"?
Are there people out there that actually care about a "story" in their Pokemon games? It seems like it would be a much better experience if they focused on expanding the core features of the series, rather than just rehashing the same tropes with more and more exposition each time, and coming up with some silly gimmick to tag on each time.

To me, the recent Pokemon games feel sort've reminiscent of the side games for GameCube. I mean, they're obviously more involved than that, but the amount of story and the levels of craziness they're willing to go to feel like a side game moreso than a main game...
I mean "Ultra Beasts", "Z-Moves", and "Mega Evolutions"? Don't get me wrong, I like some of these additions, but where are they going to stop?
