Because you're all adults who have seen through video games while the rest of the world is still growing up to them.

Ironically, Australians are probably one of the most mature people I have met in my journeys. No doubt this maturity stems from braving the elements, flora, and fauna that is Mother Nature's Hell (aka Australia).

We're just manchildren compared to Australians, really.

I remember ringing them up when I first found work to thank them for everything and to take me off payments because I'd be able to sustain myself and they couldn't comprehend what they were hearing and expected me to keep looking for new work even though I had a full time job.

They only took me off payments after I stopped replying to any of their correspondence and ignoring all their scheduled meetings.

A month later I get another payment from them, I ask to find out what's going on. Turns out my payment wasn't cancelled and they sent me a fucking debt notice a week later. I'm convinced our social services only employ the most useless people in the country.

A combination of a few things

>terrible internet infrastructure.

NBN would have been a godsend for all tech industries, but alas

>fairly high minimum wage due to high cost of living.

This causes international companies like EA to not bother investing

>strong laws for workers.

AAA game companies often have horror stories of 70+ hour weeks during development with no overtime pay. That shit wouldn't fly in Australia

>no government support.
As it's a fledgling industry (In Australia at least), many new companies can't get their feet off the ground due to the costs involved with making a profitable game. Back when Screen Australia was giving loans for new games companies, several of them started being profitable small businesses. Some examples being Defiant, the people who made Hand of Fate, HalfBrick, who made Fruit Ninja, and a bunch of other smaller, but profitable, games. With that government support pulled, most new companies can't get their businesses profitable.
>>
>>52332
>AAA game companies often have horror stories of 70+ hour weeks during development with no overtime pay. That shit wouldn't fly in Australia

isn't that exactly what happened with team bondi though?
>>
>>52332
>NBN would have been a godsend for all tech industries, but alas

Speaking of the NBN, how salvageable is it at present? My impression is that the whole thing's in pieces, a small number of people having FTTH, most on FTTN and plenty of people still not on NBN, the service still being pretty poor if not worse than what people were getting before NBN.

It's a joke. Government will just sell it to some international company.
>>
>>52569
>isn't that exactly what happened with team bondi though?

Yes. And they shut down afterwards as a result of the backlash from the local development industry.

>>52769
Not very. The "mixed technologies" apporach just means we have to rip up the entire network in 20+ years anyway, probably costing more than if they just replaced it in the first place. Liberals were very shortsighted in their approach (like they are for most things unfortunately), and as a result, the "new" NBN is neither cheaper, nor sooner than the FTTP plan.

On saying that however, I'm getting 50/50 reports on it being better than what they previously had vs about the same. Fiber to the premises being almost always an improvement, with fiber to the node being an absolute shitfest depending on where you live and how dense the population is. Everybody I work with and everybody I professionally deal with is in total agreement that NBN was a fucking mistake

The way Telstra's going, Optus and Voda are going to swallow up the market within the next few years.

Treating their customers like shit, garbage phone/mobile/NBN deals, charging money for BigPond email, and coverage that's fallen behind to the point where other service providers have caught up. The only reason they're still in business is because it's just what most people are used to.

Gubmint did the same thing to our games Industry as our Films Industry.

In the 80's, if you invested money into our Entertainment industry, any profits you made on that investment couldn't be taxed at a rate higher than 35%, this wasn't really relevant to vidya at the time, but it would have included vidya today if it wasn't changed. In a country with a top end tax bracket of 46% that's pretty significant.
What this did was caused rich cunts to invest massive amounts of money into our Film industry, giving us Mad Max, Crocodile Dundee, Strictly Ballroom, the Castle et al, and even though their returns on investment in this were taxed at a reduced rate, it was a massive source of additional tax revenue because these things pulled in money from overseas on top of providing literally thousands of Jobs to Australia.

However, the typical Melbournite REEE RICH PEOPLE SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO MAKE MONEY Social Justice types spent about 30 years trying to kill this practice, because free markets and capitalism is the devil, and eventually they succeeded in having that scrapped. Now, if a studio wants to make a movie or game, they generally have to get their funding from the gubmint, and the gubmint will only give funding to RESPECT MUH PRONOUNS MUH ABBOS MUG STOLEN GENERATOR MUH LUCKY COUNTRY shit.

This promptly reduced what was once a blooming sector of Australia that was a net profit to the nation, both fiscally and culturally, into a money hole that is a net drain on the country.

Thanks Melbourne.

Vast majority of people I went to school with went on to do uni and can now only land jobs like the type I currently have. I kinda regret not going to uni but I just didn't have the time or money for it, as well as being unable to decide on what I wanted to focus on. I might go back as a mature age student but for now, I think I made the right choice. I'm not as educated as some of my peers but I've found who you know, how you present yourself and how much drive you can put on display matters far more than what a uni degree does.

Yeah I live in Perth and it's fantastic, beaches are good and traffic is hardly ever a nightmare for the most part. I went to Melbourne for a tournament and was trying to plot a destination to the venue that could save me time by not walking and that was my experience as no cunt would help. On the upside I did lose 8kg because of my exercising across 4 days.

Perth has a bit of a reputation for being boring but that's just more of being "in" Perth. If you travel outside of the CBD area and go a bit on the outskirts you'll fine plenty of things to entertain yourself. Though I will say there's plenty of dipshits in Perth who don't know how to merge or read flow of traffic. Apparently using your turn signal is a message to tell the other guy behind you in the other lane to speed up and try and ram you in the arse.

That's what I mean, indie survived and everyone needs to stick together. Here in Sydney it isn't as good, the colleges are getting defunded in most cases. IGDA tried to appeal for some funding or something, can't remember the details, but they were declined.
Regardless, we make good "mobile" games. Are you studying in Brisbane/Melbourne?

Nah it weirder to be the older dude around a bunch of young kids.
The ever increasing technological leaps make the age gap seem much larger.
I got out of high school before social media took over and I never got into it.
Feel so out of place when younger people are talking about something on snapchat or something similar.
Been asked out from some coworkers who were 8 years younger than me and barely into their 20s.
I turned them down because of the weird age gap and because they were still immature kids at a different point in life than me.
Still made it awkward to work with them.

I think that it's a combination of taxes and discouragement from taking out loans for big projects.

Have you noticed how most Aussie AAA games are funded by big publishers like Rockstar and EA?

The current video game landscape is hard on small businesses unless you can get some crowd funding.
