Hello and welcome to 'How to be a BETTER Support' with Vel'koz. I'm Vel'koz.

Today we will be discussing one of the BEST support items in the game. I am of course referring to Zeke's Herald.

The Zeke's is a fantastic item with a fantastic active that compliments every support champion in the game and nearly every team composition. Unless the enemy literally lacks a single CC move it will always have a use in match. It does however build much more easily into particular champions more so then others.

The "Supporty" supports are the most prominent candidates. Champs that are more about back line skill usable that empowers the team or sustains them. Such as Nami, soraka, sona, ect. They can be built with full AP in mind but these picks tend to depend on mana which the Zeke's is in no short supply of. The CDR helps with skills and the active obviously is a life saver if you lack the kit to directly prevent those CC moves from hitting.

Tanky or off AP carry supports tend to skip this item as it offers no direct offensive and low defensive stats still it is worth considering if the enemy team has a strong pick comp or your carries lack escapes.

Remember that the active will not only remove CC but also grant a small heal. So even if your adc is not rooted you may want to use it to edge out a lead in a skirmish. It is however on a 180 CD so think carefully about its expenditure.

Supports get the support items because they're not going to get gold anyway, the support items build into strong items, and they give more than just the gold generation (to which Avarice really doesn't, the crit is tiny). For a similar price to Avarice, Nomad's Medallion offers 25% health and mana regeneration, 10% movement speed, a bit of sustain, and more gold if you're in a creep wave (and you should be more often than not). Couple that with the support not needing to buy big and expensive items and the investment more than pays off.

Avarice is shit on its own and should never be rushed. The lack of combat stats in a lane where you need combat stats to at least go even (or if you're ahead, to get further ahead) is far too much of a detriment. The only champions I could see rushing Shiv or Youmuu's would be far, far better served rushing the Zeal or Brutalizer. Far more power. The tiny gold gain from Avarice will not outweigh the potential gold from a kill or bullying the enemy laner. You also won't start with it nor sit on it for a long time like supports do.

When pro's buy Avarice it's usually to get a good back timing & when they aren't able to afford a superior item but need to spend their gold anyway(again, without compromising back timing)

It's also acceptable in more passive lanes where you don't anticipate being punished for picking it up.
Key to all this is you obviously don't rush it. You make a decision based off of in game factors.

If I had 800 gold on my first back, it depends on what champion I am and what I'm building. I'm building Youmuu's? I'll get a Longsword or two and some health pots/a ward. I'm building Shiv? I'll build the Brawler's and pick up a ward and a few pots. It's unlikely I'll back for the first time with just 800g, but I wouldn't blow it all on Avarice. Especially if I don't have any pots or wards.

Avarice isn't cost effective in any way. It isn't nearly as good as it seems, and the gold generation is very tiny for what it really is. It's not like GP or TF or Ashe where the gold will stack up over the course of the game, neither Shiv nor Ghostblade retain the gold generation passive so it will stop generating gold quickly as you should finish the item quickly for the power spike. Never, ever leave the base without at least one ward and a few health pots unless you have a lot of sustain. Again, you may invest some gold into it, but the amount of potential gold you gain from being safer and healthier outweighs the gold you spent.

Building Avarice means that's 800g away from the far superior Zeal or Brutalizer, which is a massive chunk. Going back with 800g means you're 300g/537g away from Zeal/Brutalizer, which is definitely not ideal, but is far better than 1100g/1337g. Especially since you can also spend a bit of that gold on pots and a ward or two.

If you have to back at 800g I assume you were forced back and didn't want to leave, so you're probably going to be behind when you get back. You don't want to be further behind by investing in the 10% crit and the terrible gold generation of the item. You gain 3 gold per 10 seconds, and 2 extra gold per unit - or 12 gold per normal wave, 14 gold per siege minion wave. While that might add up if you pick it up VERY early and SIT ON IT, it will NOT add up fast enough for it to be worth the investment, since you lack sustain, vision, and definitely trading power.

The 10% crit is worth 500g. In order to make up the 300g that it lacks in efficiency, you need to kill 150 minions, wait 1000 seconds (or over 16 minutes), or a mixture of the two. That's ridiculously bad.

Besides opportunity cost of Avarice is terrible.

Just from today and yesterday I have these classical examples
>Graves buys Pickaxe and Avarice instead of BF sword for "muh gold"
>Misses out 2 kills by less than 100 hp and later dies to their now fed AD
In the end he got like 350g out of it before he upgraded which doesn't even cover the kill gold, not to mention us dying and losing preasure and CS out of that. Together with this if you ever miss a CS because you didn't buy BF or Pickaxe instead of Avarice e.g. missed by <25 hp then that gold needs to be subtracted from Avarice gains pushing back the pay off of getting it even further.

Similar case happened today where I was playing Leona with Ashe, we hit lvl 2, I all in and Ashe Vollies, there was no slow in it which meant I had to take the kill and die in the process.
Ashe traded clean first blood for what must have been something like ~20 CS worth of bonus gold.

It's much like real life money, you have 800 in cash, you could put it in the bank and cash out 1200 after 10 years or you could actually buy meaningful stocks with it and get 2k instead.
Avarice and GP10 runes and masteries are all bait in the sense that they never actually pay back because had you got stats instead you would have earned more gold out of them.

The exception to this is naturally when you are building an item that requires Avarice as it's component next on your build and can't for one reason or another buy the other components or the full item in one shot (bad base timing, out of inventory slots etc. etc.)

Lower your music's volume so that it's roughly the same or quieter than the game. There are a number of audio cues that you need to listen for, some of them being champion abilities, that you can hear before you can see. Plus it helps because pings will be much easier to hear so you can quickly glance at the mini map.

Ultimately, get to level 30 and broaden your champion pool. Work on BASIC mechanics like last hitting, trying to trade efficiently, and warding properly (and not excessively). Look up guides on lolking and solomid for champions you're interested in until you understand which items are good on what champion and why.

Save all of your IP until level 20 when you get access to tier 3 runes. I don't know what level you are, but you will run dry building generic rune pages like:

AD: 9 AD reds, 9 flat Armour yellows, 9 flat Magic Resist blues, 3 AD Quints
AP: 9 Magic Pen reds, 9 flat Armour yellows, 9 flat MR blues, 3 AP quints

Once you have those pages, start building more specialized rune pages, with things like armour penetration, hybrid penetration, ability power blues, etc.

Avarice and gold generation runes are a relic of a long gone era, back when a lot of people would build gold per 5 items (Philosopher's Stone, Heart of Gold, Kage's Lucky Pick, Avarice Blade with the first two being very common on tops/junglers/supports and the last two being uncommon). Flat out crit is better early on, Shiv is better quickly and offers more pushing power and 1v1 potential. A vamp scepter into Shiv is often a strong investment. There's also going BotRK as well for more dueling and sustain, as well as more attack speed.

Whenever a situations arises where you would pick up avarice you should already be assuming that a superior buy is not possible for whatever reason.
