>You can literally sit on a floor and kill the monsters to make up for the shit apts

>spending so fucking long on a single floor is an actual pro of being a Mu because they're so shit
>>
>>94409103
Plus, being a scummy mummy has become drastically more shitty now that they've made it so monsters don't go to sleep anymore.

Used to be you could clear a level, then come back and wait til it was filled up again with out of depth monsters.

Now? Your rest will be broken up a million times by pissant goblins and rats invariably wandering up to you, because no matter how long you wait, the little shits won't take a nap.
>>
>>94409103
You actually don't have to do that as a mummy, in fact it will probably get you killed via ood spawns.

The really bad part of Mu is no quaffing conduct anyway, not shit apts. Well, and rF- is bad too.
>>
>>94409196
I still don't get why mummies need to be so shit. Mummies have a slightly shittier version of necromutation, and terrible stats and aptitudes. Gargoyles have a slightly better version of statue form, and okay stats and aptitudes.
>>
So mummy = permanent necromutation-ish
gargoyle = permanent statue form-ish
vampire = low blood bat form at will

when are we going to get a permanent tree form race?

Well, I explored Zigs under Trog -- keeping in mind that as I singlemindedly pumped Intelligence, my stats were not on par with a normal Trog type.

Its not impossible, but if you think you're going to just tab your way through you're dead wrong.

I found the Cloak of the Thief and the Disc of Storms insanely helpful, one for making it so you only need to fight a few monsters at a time, the other for much needed AoE.

You'll probably want to understand blowguns and their specialty ammo. A needle of frenzy against a Pandemonium Lord at the right time can be handy.

Rod of Clouds and/or Destruction could be useful.

You'll definitely want to bring some Tomb cards and a wand of digging and disintegration as well, so if you're getting overwhelmed you can face your foes one at a time.

FFS get some kind of missile repulsion/deflection too.

enchant a blowgun to +9

paralyze cerebov
>>
>>94414739
yep, the greatest trick Cerebov ever pulled was convincing the world demons are immune to special needles

They're immune to poison, but not to frenzy/sleep/paralyze/confuzzle.
>>
>>94414809
>>94415507

Oh wow. That's pretty cool. I will have to try it out.

What are the odds of paralysing brimstone fiends etc?
>>
>>94415803
Depends on how high your throwing is and your blowgun is, and I believe shooting them when they have a ? over their head enhances it.

>All needle types except "poisoned" were introduced in version 0.6. There's a saving throw for monsters: if 1 + 1d(4 + your throwing skill + your blowgun’s to-hit enchantment) is greater than the monster’s hit dice, the effect will be applied. You also have a straight 2% chance of succeeding for monsters with a hit dice of 14 or below.

>Some statistics: with no skill you’re still at 100% to succeed on HD1 or HD2 (gnoll, D1 monsters), 75% on HD3 (Sigmund), 50% on HD4 (Duvessa), and 25% on HD5 (ogre). With 4 skill as an early Assassin, you’re up to 56% on an Ogre, or 33% on a Yak.

A brimstone fiend has 18 hd, so with a +9 blowgun, that's already a max roll of 14. Need throwing 5 to have a tiny chance, and I'd wager about (not feeling like doing the math) a skill of 15 would make it happen more often than not.
>>
>>94416336

Huh.

Thank you for that.
>>
>>94416410
Anytime. I pew pew a lot so I don't pay the best attention to such things.

Rods of inacc are also great (think of them as a ranged stab weapon)
>>
>>94416336
With zero skill you have 1+1d(4+9) namely 2-14.
5 to have a 6(aprox)% chance.
41% with 15 skill (1+1d29 it's a range of 2 to 30 vs 18 so 12 times out of 30 you'd get it (to simplify this do 17 vs 1 to 29).
or 23 in 40 at max skill or about 51% because lolnobell.

General outline of math.
>>
>>94416806
Ah ok, was off by 10%, but that was just eyeballing it.
>>
>>94413965
Food was slightly more challenging when they still had nausea.
>>
>>94416901
I could have done the math wrong, but mostly the % is because the game has no bell curve for some reason
>>
>>94413965
You gobble down a lot of food in the crypt and tomb as a caster, and when the minolab shows up, or certain other bonus vaults, you'd better hope to have enough permafood on you to handle it.

Also some chars suffer worse than others. For example, deep dhorfs have okay int and aptitudes, but horrible spellcasting aptitudes.
>>
>>94417112
No I mean I was off by 10% in guessing that 15 skill, +9 blowgun meant 51%, when in reality it just means 41%.
>>
>>94417192
>>94413965
Also, it can cost you a turn when doing a series of heavy casts.
>>
Without a food clock, how would you know you're playing a roguelike?

>>

>>
>>94417837
It gave me things like elemental giants, tough dragons and stuff of similar strength, was pretty good.
>>
>>94417701
>Wouldn't axes be better for aoe than discs of storm at this point?

We're still talking about what to do in a non int focused Ziggurat/extended endgame char's case, right? You unquestionably want a wide variety of attacks. I only left a few levels later after I posted that pic, but there were times I was so heavily surrounded by enemies (and no, I didn't just rush in blindly) that I needed to dump a billion ball lightnings point blank with the disc.

Axes are definitely good but throwing and various evoc are definitely heavily encouraged. Zigs are crazy.
>>
Autism guy here.

I made a pile of 500 blessed towels, because Nethack does not have a bed, and I figure my character might need a comfortable place to sleep after 470,000 turns. That's 40 days of being awake!

High evoc rods of clouds are nice: Acid, Thunderstorms, or Negative Energy are quite potent. I'm carrying two, just in case, I don't know, I get ambushed by a bunch of Goast Moths.

>>
>>94424370
A pile of towels is pretty comfy to lie on.
The only question is how many.
A towel has weight 2, and a person's body has weight 1450. That means that roughly ~20 units of weight is 1 kilogram, so these towels weigh 100 grams each. Those are small kitchen towels.
In order to get a comfortable enough amount of them to lay on, I figured making them roughly as heavy as a bed would work - so 200 towels, or 20kg, would be not enough. But 500 towels, or 50kg would be enough.

It's a shame I genocided gremlins because FUCK summon nasties taking away intrinsics, otherwise I could remove my sleep resistance, put on an amulet of restful sleep, alchemise / farm up 500 potions of sleep, curse them, burn elbereth, pen myself into a small area with a bunch of orange dragons, and queue up craptons of turns of sleep on my comfy pile of towels.
In fact, next game I think that'll be my conduct for the game. Sleep for at least 100,000 turns on a comfy pile of 500 blessed towels.

Making TRJ continue to spawn jellies AFTER being polymorphed.

Decided to finally try out this Ru dude. An excuse to play another naga!

I'm not sure if I like him in early game - you sac a lot of stuff and get that aura that sometimes does something. Then you get jump and it's... I used it twice and I think it was pretty bad but I've only used it twice (it's moves you closer to enemy AND disables your other Ru abilities (which are better) so it just never felt like a good time to use it). Apocalypse is super-strong but the drain is severe; that said, I used it as soon as I got it and was at dark red drain in Lair. But I've gotten to Lair so it didn't matter and then I won.

Sacced skills, love (who needs friends anyway), experience, Armour skill (I thought "durability" is HP and pressed YES before reading, but I've gotten robe of Night soon after that so whatever), and scrolls - the latter was even somewhat relevant (I did some Zig levels and at one point I realized I can't recharge my /heal wounds because to do so I need to read a scroll and I was threatened by things around and it just didn't work). Tried Apocalypse at lords - paralyzed Gloorxie, Mnoleg, Dispater, slowed Lom and Asmodeus, hit Cerebov with anti-magic, damaged Eresh. Did nothing to Anta, but my aura blinded or confused him a couple of turns after that, still neat. Also paralyzed a bunch of oofs in Zot.

Overall, I am not sure I like Ru. I think his saccing and "piety" mechanics are good, but the abilities are bland (permaRecite-but-better, one turn Recite-but-even-betterer, heals and some weird jump). I don't have any good ideas how to improve this, though.

Also, I just wanted to get 3 runes but V:5 had cloak of fog so I sort of felt obliged to do postend.

Hey DCSSfriends, I'm on a run right now and I just finished Lair. I swear I found the entrance to the Orc Mines before I found Lair, but I backtracked to like Dungeon 4 and couldn't find the Mines. First win as a caster with a Bearkin Ice Elementalist of Yred! Bearkin get stupid amounts of HP thanks to innate robust 3, and their aptitudes for magic are pretty decent. Only things keeping me from getting more than 6 runes were not switching from Yred and not finding Glaciate. Hoping Bearkin get added into the stable version in the near future.

Melee combat is pretty straightforward, complexity comes more from resource management and positioning than how you hit things like in DF

Spells get more interesting as you go on, D:7 is not really indicative of how nice it can get.

If you want to try a melee build with a bit more to it try Skald. You play it as a regular melee dude who sings and enhances itself in battle.

Hey /rlg/.

I'm trying to get a char with the ULTIMATE MUTATION SET, just for fun, in the extended endgame.

I've noticed Jiyva is very stingy with his mutations and tends to take the good ones away as fast as he gives them. I've accumulated a large stack of benmut and decks of change.

Here's the question: if I get a bunch of Jiyva mutations at, say, level 1 (because they tend to disappear too fast to get to level 2-3) and leave him, can I use Helix cards and !benmut to add to levels of them?

Same question, but I stay with him for now and DON'T let any slimes eat items -- can the Helix card and !benmut add to the Jiyva mutations?
>>
>>94499763

Mind you, this doesn't include the score I'd get for shoving the chest-o-gems up Odin's ass, nor does it include the fact that I could quite easily get (close to) maxint gold, thereby capping my score.

You should check out Dwarf Fortress.

People build computers, colonise hell, and build disease pits.
I remember the thread where the guy drained the sea to make a building that captures mermaids, and then he slaughtered the adult males (except 1) and bred the females, slaughtering the children for their ivory.
That thread was great.
I played the game myself, in an older version. It was fun, but I hated the music after a while.

For whatever reason I could NEVER trigger a tantrumspiral no matter how intentionally poorly I treated my dwarves. I set up hallway traps to automatically kill pet cats, and built an automatic puppy dropper that led directly into the main dining room. 3 Dwarves committed suicide. The rest could literally not give a single fuck. I made it my point to butcher children if they entered from map edge with a family. The parents usually did not give a single fuck.

Of course, dwarves are pretty hard to piss off if you give them great food, a great dining room, a great bedroom, manage to avoid exposing them to injury and miasma, and occasionally give them a "Lovely waterfall" by installing their bedroom with a drain and flushing them with water when they try to sleep.
(I tried installing a waterfall in the dining room but it interrupted meals and caused food to scatter all over the bloody place and rot)

I'm probably more Chaotic.

I figured it might be fun to troll Moloch for a bit. So I did. And it was fun.

I wonder if there are any effects from overflowing the anger counter. I liked sacrificing my (former) pet acid blobs on Moloch's high altar in the sanctum for thousands of turns.

Effect: Moloch rejects the sacrifice. Moloch gets +1 angry. Moloch hits me with a lightning bolt, which does nothing. Moloch hits me with a disintegration blast, which does nothing. Moloch tries to summon demons, which fails since they're all extinct. And he does this every turn until the corpse rots.

In addition to the legendary levels of umad, I'm planning to flood the valley of the dead with anti-undead and anti-moloch stuff so that it can be reclaimed.

There's no thrill of discovering new items, no thrill when you played your character you've had investment in into a corner and have to choose the course of action that will give you the best chance of survival, you don't find an unique and run away and exclude half of the level, no fun stuff like finding a god you haven't even considered early and joining it, or finding an item that makes you reconsider your character building. You just pick a combo and join a god and tab into rooms full of OP endgame monsters and if you lose you've lost 2-5 minutes.

I've won it once. I don't want to play it again. It's utterly boring. At least in the actual Zigs you have a character you've invested in put in danger. In Zigsprint it's just nothing.w

Yeah, its Sprint in general boring as fuck.

Its basically a puzzle where the obvious solution is to just play the most overpowered thing everytime.

I would play something like a "minicrawl" that is something like good old crawl but a simpler dungeon with smaller levels and fast experience gains that can always be beaten under four hours

I think in general Crawl could use some cutting and I've got the impression devteam understands it, they just prefer to do it slowly (Vaults, Crypt, Depths etc.). Cutting Lair branches to 3 should probably come next, then maybe more of Dungeon/Vaults cuts? Would reduce filler quite a bit.
>>
>>94530747
>Cutting Lair branches to 3 should probably come next, then maybe more of Dungeon/Vaults cuts? Would reduce filler quite a bit.
ARE YOU FUCKING INSANE
>>
>>94530747
I don't mean actually changing Crawl.

I think it is pretty good right now compared to where it was a couple of years ago.

Lair in three levels is a bit too much, maybe. 5 or 6 would be fine. But so is 8

What I meant was basically an alternate mode to Crawl, somewhere in between sprint and the main game. Something along the lines of Crawl "à la brogue". Only one main dungeon and short playthroughs
>>
>>94530747
I think Hell needs to be shorter. Seven levels in each branch is too many when you're encouraged to get to the end as fast as possible.
>>
>>94531034
Why would Lair branches losing 2 levels each be bad
>>
>>94531125
>pretty good now
Not anymore, not fucking anymore, 0.15 and 16 killed the game
>>
>>94531195
Lair has 8 levels, you'd be cutting 5 levels worth of experience. that's what makes a real difference between prelair and postlair, since orc gives fuckall xp.
>>
>>94531125
Personally I like the variety that comes with different layouts so I would rather have shorter branches - I think it would be a general improvement to the base game (though it's better than it was, I mean I actually remember playing 0.9 and 0.10 and levels were either 5x5 rooms or layout_city, not much variety here).

>>94531184
I think Hells are in a good position since you need to dive it and having less levels would make it pointless.

I have been playing since about 0.10 and I feel that the game has only gotten better every version.

Item destruction/old corrosion/encumbrance removal was a big change, and I think balancing out completely is something that will take a few versions.

But overall they were things that did not add that much to the game

>>94531184
Precisely because you are encouraged to dive in is why 7 levels is not actually that much.
>>
>>94531863
Kobolds are pretty universal. KoBe is popular. KoFE is good if you wanna do magic. KoNe, too.
>>
>>94532080
>Item destruction/old corrosion/encumbrance removal
These made the game casual as fuck
>>
>>94532432
New corrosion is more dangerous than before and item destruction and encumbrance just lead to more trips to your stash. Do you really think these make the game more interesting?
>>
>>94532432
Old Crawl became a joke once you got to the Lair. Past that point I died due to boredom more often than not (27 dungeon levels, no depths, longer easier vaults with no guards and sentinels...) I feel the difficulty is more evened out now.

The early game is somewhat easier but everything else is as hard as it ever was. Particularly, Vaults:5 has never been as dangerous as it is now. The Abyss is also more interesting. The Depths is pretty damn tough, a lot scarier than the old latter dungeon levels and quite new too. In fact, to me Zot should probably be harder, it kinda has stayed the same and the Depths are more interesting a threatening in some ways to me.

And those things did not really make the game a lot harder. They forced you to either:

* Play optimally. Run back and forth to your stash every two minutes. Constantly drop shit to prevent destruction. Constantly swap shit to prevent corrosion. Extremely annoying

* Don't do the above and get screwed

And as >>94532876
new corrosion is a lot more dangerous.

Getting trapped with negative AC and a useless stick as weapon can easily kill you. Old corrosion was just a bother. Devs are also planning to make corrosion a lot more prominent which is also nice. rCorr should be more than an entry ticket to the Slime Pits
>>
>>94533202
>Particularly, Vaults:5 has never been as dangerous as it is now.
No corridors.
>>
>>94533202
Forgot to say.

I think the biggest thing that needs addressing now is how enchanting weapons work.

Enchantment levels +6 to +9 should probably take two scrolls each.

Getting a +9 weapon is way too easy, I very often have it before getting my second rune.

>>94533430
When was that?

Anyway, from my experience, back in 0.10 the corners where not open. Retreating into the outside of the small vaults was very safe. There were also no Vault Sentinels so you could easily clear the whole thing by stairdancing with the exception of tentacled monstrosities (those were scarier back then I must admit)
>>
>>94533795
That was the initial implementation of the V:$ change. A lot of people didn't like it, so the compromise was to shave off the corners.
>>
Is anyone else getting fucked on Elona's panic quests?

>>
>>94534070
Oh...

Wow, that is evil
>>
>>94533795
I don't think weapon enchantment is a problem and I would rather just limit it at +6 or something than making scrolls work on a magic number.

Or maybe making enchantment scrolls more rare.
>>
>>94534078
Nevermind, just fixed it. Had my map folder in my save folder for some reason.
>>
>>94534305
> Or maybe making enchantment scrolls more rare.
That creates the issue of relying too much on luck.

I think the magic number thing is not a huge problem, when you try to enchant a +6 weapon it could tell you "Doing this will consume two scrolls, proceed?" and would tell you you need another one if you only have one in your inventory.

I think it creates more interesting decisions. Makes you choose between having two +6 weapons or one +9 weapon if you are starting from 0 enchantment.

Also makes randarts in general more interesting, their enchantment levels often orbit around 6 or 7
>>
>>94535098
I dunno, I just don't think it's worth it and I don't think it'll "balance" too much. I wouldn't hate it but it would make me raise an eyebrow I guess.

I didn't mind the old randomized system, btw.

>>94541845
You know, while I do think he is wrong there's nothing wrong with more "realistically" constructed fantasy settings. Like, I can imagine a game where a mage casts a fireball but it doesn't just do damage but also has some neat interactions with environment like evaporating the water etc. DF is a game about dorfs and elves but it tries to simulate a lot of stuff - it's a valid direction, Crawl just took another one.
>>
>>94542596
That's a weird example, you can set trees on fire in crawl with fireballs, and make steam clouds when firing over water. I'd like some more open world roguelike that isn't elona.
>>
>>94542596
Seconded. That anon is a retard for complaining about muh casualization, but realism in fantasy can be pretty great.
>>
>>94543527
Yeah, it was a bad example but I was too lazy to think of a better one. But hopefully I've gotten my point across? The level of realism is a decision that is independent of setting, though admittedly we've come to associate some settings with certain levels of realism.

Use Elbereth, credit clone for protection once you reach minetown (doing so at Xlvl 9-11 is fine). Try eating more corpses for intrinsics.
The werejackal in the sokozoo is preventable by engraving some Elbers before you open the door. The woodland elves shooting poisoned arrows really should not bother you, go around them and > until you get poison resistance.
Magic traps cannot sleep you. Sleeping gas traps can sleep you. It's merely unfortunate that the dwarven zombies were nearby. Try eating an elf corpse.

Why not roll a Berserker?
>>
>>94575813

Fighter starts with some good items, since the ecumenical temple is found relatively early I thought about starting as one and then converting to Trog later.
I guess that what's been bugging me is, should I leave my skill training automatic or should I tweak it? I read that Fighting levels early on weren't that good so I put it on manual and highlight my weapon skill, then never mess with it again.
Now that I do think about it, most of my deaths have been because I think "hah I can deal with this", and then I get critted or just hold tab until I only have 10 HP left and nothing to do, so I guess that's one lesson learned.
>>
Okay I have been following your advice guys I started as a MiBE and hit aa/ab/ac whenever stuff got hairy and beat the early game fairly easily. I've got 3 runes now and I decided I should probably switch gods so I can cast some easy spells in the late game. I picked Makhleb because I already had some rN+ although I'm starting to think TSO might've been better... Anyways I saved a book with Blink in it because I felt it might be useful and it was only a level 2 spell I'm level 23 right now I only have 4 Int so I'll be able to get 6 max is that enough to learn a Blink and maybe a couple other low level spells or should I just forget about it? I'm wearing Plate Armour too.
>>
>>94580550
Oh I should also mention that I have a ring of wizardry and a ring slot I wouldn't mind using it on.
>>
>>94580550
Meh, you don't really need any spells. Blinking out in zot's open areas is just as likely to fuck you over as it is to help, and your spellpower for repel missles will be shit due to your int and will deactivate on the first missle or two that it blocks. Spectral weapon, song of slaying and regen can all be good, and even controlled blink is possible if you literally only train translocations forever. But with minotaur aptitudes you might as well forget spellcasting and take advantage of makhleb's invocations or evokable stuff instead

A ring of free action along with sleep resistance from an elf corpse will prevent those annoying while helpless deaths. For that kind of stuff you should be wearing one of the dragon armours (other than GDA) they have better AC<->Encumbrance relationships than mundane armours.

Still, as a Minotaur casting is probably not a huge priority, it is a sizeable investment with dubious rewards. You sound pretty new, and you should not be aiming from more than a 3-5 rune win your first time. Converting in this kind of win is not really that advisable. Trog is meh for extended but fine for a few rune win

I've always wished somebody would take IVAN and make it into a more conventional game. I've always liked its mechanics, but the scaling system and the whole "victory shouldn't be possible; it's a bug if you can win" concept just kind of makes it into a bit of a long-form joke.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to come across any elves early enough for that to help. The last four or so games I've played have all been me dying while helpless to a jaguar, zombie, werejackal, or whatever because of sleeping gas, so I think I'm going to take a bit of a break.

Funnily enough I don't think I have ever tried Qaz I have won several times using makh, gong shield, maxwells and obsidian axe, I tired firestarter but didn't think it had as reliable crowd control. Piercer is pretty fun to use too with a centaur or high elf and if you run into a merfolk room and get some javs of penetration they are extremely good.

There are a few other things that can give sleep resistance too elves are just generally the first reliable method you should probably make it a habit to read the wiki unless you're against that for some reason. The Nethack wiki unlike some other wiki's is actually pretty good.
For example:
http://nethackwiki.com/wiki/sleep_resistance
You can often find gelatinous cubes fairly early and homunculus can be good to eat if you have poison resistance (orcs/barbarians). Poison resistance is really easy to get though it will probably be the first resistance you get and if you have a unicorn horn it's safe to eat poisonous corpses pretty much whenever as you can reverse the stat drain.

Welp, I am having some serious trouble getting these guys killed.

Guess Slime+Vestibule might do them in?
>>
>>94591625
Just leave them in the Orcish Mines and never come back?

It's a +8 plate armour rC++, Dex +2 randart I wouldn't be using it if it was a regular plate. I did just find the Armour of the Dragon King in a shop though so I think I'll switch to that now that I have been talked out of using magic.
>>
>>94591801
It's not impossible to cast spells in a GDA. Do you have a wand of hasting?
>I wouldn't be using it if it was a regular plate
Regular plates are good.

20-27 invo qaz deals so much explosiosn it freezes the game.

The piety gains are so pumped up that it's like it was free.

>leaving your niggas
No.

>>94591726
They deserve dying a glorious death in battle
>>94592013
I would never do that
>>
>>94591889
I have a wand of hasting, two wands of healing and scrolls of recharging in the double digets. Hence the only spell I could think of that would be useful is blink (I used all my scrolls escaping Trogs wrath...)

>I have a wand of hasting, two wands of healing and scrolls of recharging in the double digets.
Good. Just don't fuck up and everything will be nice.
>>
>>94592398
Rely on Teleport more, it takes about 3-5 turns to kick in and scrolls are plentiful
>>
>>94594516
Yeah I know but tele is less useful when Trog surrounds you with a bunch of berserking stone giants.
>>
>>94594823
I don't know how well you are doing, but at the point in the game I am ready to leave Trog I should be able to survive that without even taking too much damage by the time teleport kicks in
>>
>>94591906
No kidding I just did a run through as a a monstrous demonspawn so no boots, gloves, helmet of Qaz I ran into an early slime room and got frail and -4 dex too yet still it was by far the easiest run I have ever done, in fact it was so easy it wasn't even that much fun I'm going to try qaz again the the main dungeon I'm sure it isn't quite as good because everything isn't bunched up but I imagine disaster area is still pretty good.
