Nah. I'm sorry, but action rpg combat never feels well-implemented to me. I've played other Tales titles and it's just not my kind of thing. I love action games with complex gameplay, and I love turn-based RPGs, especially if they have lots of numbers and menus everywhere.

Action RPG is just the wrong combination for me where it has elements of both, but doesn't get deep enough into either to be interesting. For the most part. Knights in the Nightmare is great.

No no, you don't understand. There is no story at all. I wasn't joking when I said there's no text in the whole game. It just throws you into stage 1 without any context. And you just enjoy the incredible gameplay throughout. Just like every other Umihara Kawase game, the game ends when you walk through any of the ending doors and the credits roll. That's it.

That all being said, it's worth noting that Umihara Kawase is easily the best series of platforming games I have ever played period. If you have any questions at all about them, let me know.

I've only played Yumi's Odd Odyssey, but if that's any indication then it certainly would be among the best just for its unwavering focus on skill-based, physics-oriented platforming. It's "simple to learn, hard to master" mechanics done damn near flawlessly.

one reason Umihara is so great is it adjusts it's challenge level to the player. There are multiple exits and multiple paths to the end. Harder to reach exits lead to harder paths. the difficulty ranges from pussy mode to insanely difficult, .

Not exactly. Some of them are shallow, but not all. The mechanics can get pretty in-depth. Umihara Kawase is a great example, because all of the levels are nonlinear, and the rope mechanics are very intricate. It in particular is a series all about the joy of movement, and it does it very very well. Speedrunning can get pretty interesting with the amount of ways you can approach the levels and the very high skill ceiling, too.

I am curious what platformers in general you've played though. Just being interesting, having good mechanics, and feeling good to control makes a game worth playing to me. I don't care much about length provided it's meant to be replayable.

Awesome! Umihara Kawase was my first too, actually, way back in the day for the PS1. One of the greatest decisions I've ever made, as importing completely changed gaming for me. I've gotten to play so many masterpieces that have never come stateside, and it blows my mind how few people do this considering how many of said games require absolutely no japanese at all to enjoy.

I highly recommend it and hope you enjoy it.

It's very replayable and always a blast discovering new routes. All of the games and all of the levels are basically designed by one guy, so it's crazy how much proofing went into them.

Actually I'm going to use this opportunity to dump the Umihara webms I have.

It is overall my least favorite of the three, but that's not to say that it's not a fucking fantastic game. Especially since my biggest problem with it was the 30 FPS running rate, when the other two were at 60 FPS. But since chirari runs at 60 fps, that's really not an issue here.

Aside from that, I prefer watercolor and sprite graphics to 3d models, but that's just preference, and the graphics are being improved for the vita release anyway.

That all being said, please note that Chirari comes with the original Super Famicom Umihara Kawase. Considering it would have already been worth buying for Sayonara alone, this pretty much seals the deal.

This is the main reason I'm considering importing it. 60 FPS Sayonara with extra stages and enemies is all fine and dandy but there's an entire game there that I haven't played and remains unlocalized to this day. It's a slightly bigger draw, methinks.

If you have a 3DS then Sayonara Umihara Kawase has already been localized as Yumi's Odd Odyssey so you can get a taste for the gameplay, but it's not at 60 FPS so it's not as smooth as these webms. That said, it's hard to recommend buying a game and then turning around to buy it again a few months later. But there is an easy way to see what all the hubbub is about as of this moment. You could also emulate the older games. Not a whole lot to lose there with the lack of a localization and all.

Originally I wanted a gaming handheld device ( had a ds lite back in the day) my iphone didn't cut it I only listened to music.

Asked my friends all suggestions 3DS then I had this one friend who suggested the Vita ( and vitagen) naturally I went with the Vita since people with refined tastes have grown up from Pokemon a long time ago is pokemon still decent? Sure but the Vita has far more interesting titles.

You can technically zanmato everyone (it's not that hard) but that's not very satisfying.
