Well, personally speaking, there is no need to grind all that much in the beginning. It can't hurt to have most elemental skills on most chars but like >>86379534 said, you're not really swimming in money. Although, the first ones are dirt cheap so just go for them.

If you're just after the hunting skills, focus on your main phys character (preferably Serph if I remember correctly) and get AP Divide and Iron Stomach as fast as possible. Coupled with two characters that now every elemental skill to hit enemies weaknesses you rake in AP pretty fast.

Or, if you're emulating, go the dirty skrub method, take the highest fatal hunt skill you have and savescum.

Except hidden bosses, phys Serph alone carried me through pretty much the second half of the game. World of STR and all that, with a bit of agi I think, the others were just there to heal and buff Serph, or occasionally attack either bosses for more press turn icons, or normal enemies with phys repel. Then again, that's what hunt skills are for.

To be honest, SMT4 was really boring with 200 Dex. Especially since demons deal around ~100-200 damage on weakpoints when the same Flynn attack on a non weakpoint deals 1500. They were just so useless for at least 3/4 of the game.
