That's him for the first half of the game. But it implies that he finally gets the point when he sacrifices himself. He used to criticize other people for being selfish, and think everyone should do more things for eachother. But then he realized that he was selfish too, and was criticizing them from a position of privilege. And so he (and by extension all of the rich) would have to give that up in order to actually have a basis to.

The other problem with the games is that they make a distinction between "bad law" and the "good" law endings. And yet for the first half, you often get law points by siding with bad law. Up until like halfway, they act like law would simply be leaving mikado in the middle ages, almost totally the way like it is. The real ending where they take the technology and abolish class has very little to do with protecting the status quo.

That part against the Status quo is Jonathan's blind obedience to authority figures. He not only doesn't object to what those in charge do, but he quickly justifies anything they do. The Archangels as the new rulers of Mikado say Tokyo must be destroyed so he agrees.

Which is ironic when you consider that law endings are generally about removing class, whereas chaos endings are generally about having class differences. Hell, in infernal tokyo class was literally physically obviously a part of your appearance. And the chaos idea that the most aggressive who can take the most for themself should have the most isn't even remotely close to "fair." Its just another undeserved class system, except based on something that will make life even worse for the underclass.

Which is one of the issues with how the alignments are presented. In real life, collectivism based solutions are generally seen as siding with the underclass against the upper class. But in SMT, and especially IV they randomly lump both bad law "preserve some shitty system" together with "create system where everyone can feel secure." So the tone of what the law ending actually is vs how you get there is only vaguely consistent.

Okay... your post is one of the most chaos favoritist things I've ever seen. And you're seeing law even worse than the game shows them. Which is hard. Go watch the scene where Johnathan sacrifices himself again. After criticizing people for being selfish he says he realizes that he was always one of the people he's criticized all along, even though he didn't want to admit it. And the reason he brought up that he thought other people were selfish is that he was leading in to talking about himself. He starts talking about his own flaws and weaknesses. And that leads to why he decided he should sacrifice himself. Because if he actually wants to not be selfish he has to willingly walk to his death for what he thinks is right if its required of him. Which makes sense on law. For chaos, there's no coherent logic whatsoever for why walter does the same thing.

And on chaos when he dies, he's not just talking about human desires in general. He's talking more specifically about extreme chaos ones. He's literally blown away by how extremely selfish you became, and is basically saying that he sees you as getting on a path of more and more indulgence that you'll never be happy with, and worries that chaos influence will do this to humans. Which mastema hints at too. That by becoming chaos, you'll learn why insane indulgence is bad and eventually come back to neutral.

Actually there is a reason. Walter fears becoming like Jonathan and becoming covetous of what he has and wanting it to remain the same. Seeing Kiyoharu and Kenji in the other worlds also helped him to decide as well, and so he sacrifices himself for that reason. He also does it because he believes Flynn is the one who can truly lead the strong.

Also it is about how Merkabah/Jonathan doesn't understand what anyone wants. He talks about how all things follow God's order during the battle, while humans and demons try to defy it. He literally can't understand why they wouldn't follow God. That is why his final words is to ask what they desire.

I hate both routes anyways. The most I like about them is the optional quests with Minako and seeing Azazel spread knowledge because he believes humans are superior to Angels, unlike Lilith who is a bitch.

I've watched the scene. That "logic" is so ridiculous its confusing that they expected us to believe he would have it. No one who decided that they love max freedom so they can indulge and the strong can do as they please would decide that that means that they should kill themself young just to not become old. If he didn't mind dying, he could have just done what he wanted in mikado til they killed him for it. And even if they did, they might want to die at like 40, not 18. So its bizarre that they declare that both law and chaos characters would sacrifice themselves, but neutral is the odd one out... and this is a good thing, yet no one stopped to think about it? What's more, he never even asks whether its actually necessary for him to sacrifice himself. Since doing so seems more defeatist than someone chaotic should be. Or whether there's not some other gaian who they could find who would do it. Things you would expect them to actually want to know.

What would have been cool for that scene is if they provided a reason for one of you to have to, and then you had to fight Walter as a boss over who had to. Instead they just had that clusterfuck which made it look like they were trying to poorly mirror johnathan.

And merkabah is the one saying he can't understand, not johnathan. And that's more an expression of dismay than it is straight up saying he has no clue how they work. Like the chaos characters who whine that someone as strong as you should agree with them

The game seems to imply more that tayama was doing his own thing, and mastema after coming to tokyo decided that he would uphold it long enough to keep the humans safe until the ceiling is lifted. The guys who actually whine about that are those scrub Gaens in Tsukiji. Belial just laughs at God's paradox, and Walters voice is the one who speaks through Lucifer and says that since they were stronger that means they were right, and there are quests with some demons you face that believe in world of STR but are impressed when you kick their ass. Though some like Cerberus gets frustrated when you keep hunting him and his horde down.l

Both entities are likely influenced by the souls they ate, as the two are implied to be the Great Spirit of Spite and Goodwill that supports Hope, but the Demon Lord and God's Car acquire them and prevents Masakado from uniting with his body on Neutral.

Being law doesn't automatically mean you want the law ending. If it did, then you'd only be able to take neutral demons on the neutral ending. Mastema in IV has demons working for him as a kind of closer version to mythology mastema. In context it means that he is law, and the demons are chaos, but that averages out to neutral. I've watched that scene about 20 times. That's not what happens. Johnathan's voice is not the one who asks what humans desire. Merkabah asks sadly why humans and demons struggle to deviate from the lord's will, when its obviously right. Johnathan addresses just you specifically, asking what it is that YOU desire, implying that your selfishness is out of control even more than normal non-law characters.

And the issue isn't that its impossible for anyone on any side to sacrifice themself. Its that it specifically makes the law and chaos characters do it, but NOT neutral. Which comes off as very bizarre, since you'd think that the implication of it then is that something about the outliers causes it. Which if we're not going by logic that allows everyone to, you'd hardly expect it to place chaos closer to law than neutral. Even if you were selfish and chaotic, that doesn't mean you want to let your friends die to become the arm of a schoolgirl you don't even know.

Also, you know, the fact that in II the archangels minus gabriel support the "bad version of law." Yet in IV we suddenly are supposed to trust them to do the good version? IVs story even literally parodies IIs, yet randomly ignores the precedent set by the angels. Even worse than this is that in nocturne even gabriel wanted muh wurld of STR, so by this point we can more or less expect the archangels to be on a totally new side every week.

Of course, Zayin in II says that the angels had the right motives, they just started doing it wrong, and it ended up badly. Which is a bit vague as to what that means. Its hard to rationalize the center as being well intentioned, or even lawful.

Once I max out Cielo's LU I need to decide what I want to dump the rest of Serph's levels into. Gale and Cielo are at level 20 and 30 respectively when you get them. Unless Serph is at a higher level then they appear at Serph's level. The mantras depends on what level they are when you get them. The higher the levl, the more they mastered if I'm not mistaken.

Well, it's most similar in the sense that it's a first person dungeon crawler, but the battle system, atmosphere, fusion system are all different, among other things. If you liked SJ mostly for its strange and alien atmosphere, I wouldn't recommend it. SH does have a very nice "the future from the 90s" vibe going on.
If by "waiting for SMT4" you mean that you're European and are waiting on that release, then definitely give it a try. It's gonna be a long while before that comes out.
