Engineers have been working on for months on the engine so it doesn't work like shit even on good hardware like for instance - Valve's shit games.
And the marketing team deserves money too, because getting retarded autists interested in something isn't nearly as easy as you would think.

So it is hard work. And they do deserve money.

Let's discuss Overwatch's strategy merit compared to another the-player-controls-one-unit strategy game like DOTA. Each player has ~3 skills and an ultimate, so there's parity there.

But the camera perspective isn't top-down, it's first person. This makes zero sense for a strategy game and actively inhibits the player's ability to get an overall picture of what's going on. The controls also make it impossible for the player to ever control more than one unit, like they sometimes do in DOTA.

There are no map resources to fight over - as a strategy game, the only strategic element is the win condition. You cannot have such a lopsided 'strategy' game ever be interesting by its strategic merit.

Overwatch is shit as either an FPS game or a strategy game.

I can safely say that the "tanks" in this game are just super good. Roadhog, Winston, and Reinhardt are basically necessary for any sort of pushes. Bastion is just a better Tjorborn until they make it so you can get scrap some other way than killed enemies. Pharah+Mercy is an all-around team core that can do massive damage while also being hard to chase. Widowmaker+Mercy is an absolutely insane defensive core.

Symmetra really suffers from her teleport being her ultimate which takes so long to get back when destroyed. Junkrat, Hanzo, and Reaper just suffer from being outclassed by other classes, though Reaper does help with pushes against Bastion. Zenyatta's ult is great but hes just too squishy, he's Borderline B.

Hitscan is objectively inferior to fast projectiles, especially for defensive play, because you can fire from angles which do not allow you to be damaged. Shoot at the space where an enemy will soon occupy and then move out of the way - they will be damaged and there will be no way for them to damage you with hitscan (because there's no line-of-sight to you) or with projectiles (because you aren't moving toward them.)

If you watch high-level quake gameplay, railgun and lightning gun players like Toxx get completely assraped by people with good rocket skills. This is why. Projectiles are superior at high skill levels. Also are better on LAN.

Overwatch characters have about the same parity as dota. Main fire, perhaps an alt fire, 2 abilities, one of which may be a mobility abilitiy, and an Ult. There is a bit of shifting around but every character does about 5 things.

The maps and gameplay are designed around not getting an "overall picture". Flanks and chokes are designed with the perspective in mind. Some character have abilities, movement or otherwise to give them a better picture and that's taken into account for character balance. There is no need for FoW and a vision game because your physical vision IS the FoW. Good team VOIP is also a solution to this. Plus if, as you've noted players control one unit the camera perspective works just fine.

No big deal. You could erase all the multi-unit heroes from Dota and it would still be a great game. Further, heroes with automated secondary units are perfectly viable and you already have a venomancer style mini-turret hero. You could easily include automated mobile units as well.

Hanzo, Widowmaker, Mcree are skillbased but their impact is low compared to the non-skill-based classes. Respawn time is like five seconds and dying charges your ultimate by about 20-30%. One Zarya mindlessly feeding into the enemy team until her ultimate is charged, then sitting above her capture point and dropping the ultimate in the middle when the enemy comes, makes the game unwinnable for the enemy team even though there's nothing skill-related about what she's done.

Right the objective is the objective. The "Resource" you gain is actually the advancement of the payload or progress of the control point. Remember that there are hard checkpoints at each third on control points. And this objective changes naturally over the course of the game. "Gold" in arts/mobas is used as a way to convert incremental advantages (like hero kills) into long term advantages for taking objectives. This is very important when the map is design with a strong defenders advantage at the end. Overwatch has you convery incremental advantage (kills and respaen time) in to long term advantage (objective progress) but given the faster pace and lower defender's advantage the stat based inevitability of a gold resource isn't necessary.

The take away here is that it's a Hybrid. If you look at is purely as an FPS or a Stragetgy game, yes you'll think it's simple. But it's bringing together elements of both and must consider both at the same time. Perhaps they have already lost some essential element that dooms the design to failure, but early feedback doesn't seem to bear that out. In fact I think Overwatch has smartly chosen what to keep and what to ditch from the different genres. Battleborn seems much more slavish and suffers for it.

Just because they have strategy doesn't mean they have enough strategy to compete with real strategy games by their strategic merits. Those games survive because they are good as FPS, which Overwatch is not.

Overwatch is a hybrid. Most of the criticisms seems to come from the extremes of FPS and Strategy sides complaining that it isn't pure FPS or pure strategy.

A lot of the strategy in the game is, I think, adapting your team comp to the map, map position, and opposing team on the fly. I'm very interested to see how this evolves as they add more heroes.

Overwatch's FPS side is extremely casual - even the game's supporters admit this, and instead try to argue that its strategic elements aren't casual. I'm making the argument, successfully, that they are.

Mercy is meh in skirm games. In actual ranked gameplay where people actually talk to each other, she is nuts, but at this stage in the beta where people don't have enough friends playing the game to do stacked games I don't think she is too bad.

I have run into a few dumb comps like her and Roadhog just chillin and takin shots.

McCree is alright, but his ststained is meh compared to heroes like Reaper and Soldier.
