Lads I need help.

Playing as Mexico, managed to take back all my cores from the US and force them to release the Cherokee, New England, and Columbia.

They still have a way bigger population than mine, and their army buildup is scaring me. They currently have ~80 brigades to my 55, and I'm pretty sure they'll have 200+ to my ~130 when we both mobilize. I know they're going to try to take back their cores soon. Do the US get specific immigration events or something?

Faction members can be dissuaded by using your Spymaster on the, iirc, Scheme mission in thier capital. A good spymaster will keep everyone out, though once you get big enough it's best to focus on superdukes and other such big vassals.

Ireland IS tutorial island, in the sense that it's typically hard to get completely facerolled. Most people don't bother Ireland much, so it's a good place to get grips on the mechanics of the game and make your first kingdom. You'll get the hand of it.

I've found you'll usually get a revolt early game, and generally one every new ruler you go on as the New Ruler opinion malus pisses everyone off.

Fighting a less than fun war can also cause vassal revolts, especially with factions. A good part of their decision making is based on comparisons of their cumulative levy vs yours. If your whole levy is destroyed, expect trouble.

When having Austria in your sphere when you form Germany there's an event for them where they can join you with their entire empire for 40 infamy. The chance of them taking that option is very low though. There's an event for you as Austria or KuK that triggers if you are in a position to form Germany and still have non-cores. I haven't done it but I imagine it would be similar to the first.

Why would you? Building no factories would leave thousands of educated, unemployed craftsmen and clerks on Hungary and other uncored provinces. This will force them to migrate to Austria propper, which means you'll have a far more industrialized Österreich, capable of competing industrially with the rest of the German states. Unfortunately a lot of it can boil down to this. It depends a lot on how strong your neighbours are. Make sure to pay attention to when they're fighting wars, and if they can win them.
If you haven't seen it already, the character screen will show you their levy, and a breakdown of how much is theirs and how much is their vassals. Picking on new rulers can be useful since they get less troops, especially if they have low martial. Lots of things to consider.

People need to recognize one thing about HoI3's Black Ice mod.

It's not completely shit. It's mostly shit, but there are some very interesting unique mechanics that should be Incorporated a mod like HPP.

1. The unique divisional build system that allows for more varied, interesting divisional units that more closely resemble their real life counterparts.

2. A more comprehensive tech and unit makeup, albeit with a need for some greater trade offs built in that force players to make real choices.

These things above should be incorporated into HPP, as well as updated versions of Francesco's models.

Then all we would need is additional strategic military, economic, and political decisions tailored to major and semi-major nations with potential for branching, dynamic paths. Keep in mind by this I do not mean utter sandbox, but paths that have been considered and discussed and formulated through well-researched histories and analyses.

With this, we would have the ultimate hearts of iron game.

The problem with this is that it'll cause the Civil War political structure to look vastly different than it should unless additional events are added in.

I agree it should be done, but you'll need to do an event for the '40s which knocks up jingoism (either that or add a 5% increase to jingoism for Yankees and a 10% increase to jingoism for Dixies when the M-A war starts) and probably an event for the early '50s which starts turning most Dixie and Texan POPs strongly reactionary, as the other anon suggested. The South was so reactionary before the Union collapsed it was ludicrous, and already that's not well-represented.

I don't think they should have party loyalty after the start. The loyalty should fade gradually and should shift to voting based on ideology, as is usual for the Vicky engine. If it's kept based on loyalty throughout the entire game, it's much less subject to any partial divergence.

The only thing that would really need to be done to keep America in a state of flux and uncertainty--which is what the political situation was from '44-'60--is the general increase in expansionist (especially Southern expansionist) tendencies and the push to keep slavery. National jingoism bonuses in the '40s and huge reactionary boosts to Dixie pops in the '50s can simulate that fine, and then after that POP ideologies can be left to circumstance again.

About the issues, I know it's something complicated. The way paradox does it to avoid a fixed date for the ACW is the event spam. It also regulates and distributes moralism. It works, but it's spammy. I don't think there is another way, unless you just set it by date and let the ideology be damned. Hell, even the ideology-bombs have their own issues, as their firing, at least, will be set by date. And since it'd all come in one clump, it'd probably interfere with a "natural" Civil War anyway.

I don't know. It's a difficult question. The best way to do it, especially considering the eventual 1815 start, would likely be a combination of situation AND ideology. The Civil War started for a variety of reasons, but the most important was the perception that the South was being "hemmed in," both territorially and politically. Whether the Mexican-American war happened, and whether those states were made slave states, would have a major bearing on tensions in the South. So too would the outcome of the Missouri Compromise, the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska act. and the victory or failure of the Republican party.

Perhaps a moderate solution could be made, and ideological changes could be bound alongside major policy decisions/events in America. Passage of the Missouri Compromise would reduce militancy in the South but increase Dixie conservative/reactionary support simultaneously. Annexation of the Mexican territories would reduce militancy and make reactionary Dixies more conservative (reduce their extremism). Hmm. I don't know how ideal that would be, either, but it would reduce the total number of events and reduce ideological changes which could precipitate the war to actual historical events which affected the tenor of the times.

I recently came back to CK2 after not playing it for years but I can't help but notice that the game runs absolutely awful now. It always slowed down after playing for a few hundred years but that stuttery slowdown is already here at the start of the game now. I dread to think what it would be like later.

That's not a bad idea in principle, but it doesn't really account for ideology. Arguably--and this is about the biggest "arguably" you can have in Civil War historiography, mind--the South never would have rebelled had they felt that their right to holding slaves was not being compromised. In a hypothetical situation where an overtly anti-slavery party (so liberal, in Vicky terms) never won high office in the American republic, there's a chance that the South never would have rebelled. Of course a permanent conservative/reactionary deadlock on the government would never happen in Vicky, but I doubt, for example, that the South would have rebelled in 1860 if their candidate won the presidency.

Basically what I'm getting at is that ideology, by necessity, has to play a part in the Civil War. If pro-South forces dominate the government, they're not likely to rebel until those forces are out of office. And pro-South forces held the government for much of the '40s and '50s, which is a great deal of the reason why ever-rising tension even from the '30s didn't boil over until 1860. The Civil War could have happened a lot sooner if anti-slavery sentiment and liberal control of the government had happened earlier, but it didn't. And so HPM should, ideally, set up the conditions that make America less likely to have a Civil War prior to the late '50s/early '60s, but also allow for it to occur earlier, perhaps even decades earlier, under the proper conditions.

tl;dr there has to be SOME level of ideological manipulation in America if you want it to work "historically."

The professor I had for the course argued that Brown's raid was essentially the point of no return. Almost the entire South was shocked to discover that the North actually approved in large measure of what Brown had done; a few even called for more violence until the slavery issue was settled. At first the South thought this was just isolated insanity, but soon newspapers across the North started to print it, and Southerners started to call for violence against abolitionists gradually on their own. Effectively, the two sides of the debate not only polarized, but their suggested responses radicalized following the raid.

Now, whether I believe that or not is a different story. There was a lot of saber-rattling around the time of the Missouri Compromise, the Tariff of Abominations, etc. I haven't done enough research to know personally whether the general mood really did turn that sharply against unity.

Whatever the case about the inevitability of disunion, the actual event which secured it was absolutely the election of Lincoln. My professor would have argued that Lincoln coming to the white house was merely an effective scapegoat for the South to point at, but even if that's true Lincoln also escalated tensions on his own. He was not for abolishing slavery, but he was for completely isolating it (no new US territory would become slaveholding in any capacity), and so he played into that Southern fear of political and territorial isolation. In my opinion, it was Lincoln that was the final straw. Disunion might well have been inevitably after Brown's raid, but it might have been a decade longer in coming if not for a Republican's election.
