The idea with the cards being that since they're in certain areas, you can farm those to get gear that might otherwise be inaccessible without lots of currency.

I don't give 2 shits about who makes them, but it does give you a way to work towards gear that might otherwise have been unobtainable without hefty trading or some luck as fuck RNG. Even if the chance of getting cards for BiS gear might still be minuscule, it's still good, and the cards themselves can be traded for.

I played an mmo called nexustk like 10+ years ago. Lockstep was the default, and if your ping wasn't perfect, you'd move slower than the max speed (more specifically you'd stop on every tile for a moment depending on your ping). They added a feature to move at full speed all the time at the risk of desync if you lagged. It wasn't hardcore as it was an mmo, but at high levels the exp penalty was worse than PoE, and you also dropped half your inventory/equipped items when you died, lost dura (some items were unrepairable), and some items were flagged as break-on-death.

tl;dr ggg re-implemented something the first ever graphical mmo phased out :^)

1. security. most of those games had little in the way of encryption and packet monitoring. so there was little overhead compared to modern games for which most of packets transfered are related to some security shit

now games are hosted on virtual severs, all isps are clogged up with streaming, wifi shittyness

all those things contribute to a worse gaming experience, cause net traffic is harder to predict due several qos layers, traffic shaping, and even fucking cats rubbing themselves on your wifi router, etc
