Persona Q is probably not the best place to start, considering it's a fanservice game for people who played Persona 3 and 4, and takes place within both game's plots. It's not recommended till you play Persona 3 and 4 beforehand, unless you really don't mind.

Fusion in vanilla is a bit trash, in Golden you get to chose all the inherited abilities from a list, rather than having to back-out and reselect your fusion to get new random ones.

In my experience pay attention to things in this order

Having a persona that has no weaknesses is most important, this is doubly true for P3 because getting your weakness hit in P3 causes you to lose an entire turn, meaning your team will now operate 2 turns on their own without being able to receive new orders. Big nono. If something is weak to light or dark you can essentially get instantly game over'd at any time and have no defense.

I don't quite understand the second question. The first time you get a persona, it is registered in that state. This is regardless of whether it was a shuffle time persona or a fused persona. From that point on, if the persona's stats/skills/levels change for any reason, you can register that instance of the persona to overwrite the previous instance.
