I read the article and I think this article brings up a good point, actually, though I think that the score was totally out of whack.

The suggestion that you might need to spare somebody who isn't yellow is kind of an obtuse hint, and the game never explicitly mentions that you might need to continue using spare on somebody over and over again until it finally works. I certainly wouldn't have picked up on that if I hadn't watched somebody play through the demo first.

A lot of the boss fights in this game have a similar problem actually.

- How many of you figured out how to spare toriel without somebody telling you or you spoiling yourself?
- How many of you figured out that you had to run away from Undyne three times, but only after your heart was turned red?
- How many of you figured out that there was no way to Mercy Asgore without nearly killing him first?

I did. It seemed intuitive to me since you were told by the frog earlier that you'd have to use spare on a white enemy, Napstablook introduced the concept of having to do the same thing to an enemy multiple times to get spare to work, and her text changes every time you do "spare."

I kind of lucked into this one. Sparing and acting stopped yielding any new dialogue and I didn't want to fight so I did the only thing I had left other than fighting and I ran. I hadn't even considered that I wouldn't be able to run when I was green, I just happened to be red when I thought to ran.

I spent 3 hours trying to just talk to him before I gave up. I felt like a failure because Flowey had taunted me at the beginning of the game that I'd eventually give up my nonviolence because an enemy was too hard. It just eventually seemed that, after trying every other thing possible and getting good enough at dodging his attacks that I could survive for a ridiculously long time, the only option I had was fighting.

I generally don't mind fighting and defending myself in games, but when it comes to killing the innocent or helpless... I refuse. I hate grinding, and I hate killing the joke enemies or the ones that aren't actually trying/able to hurt me.

Hell. I remember playing some SNES tactics game with mechs, and being told the mission would end when I took out the leader. When I did, the mission didn't end because I was supposed to kill all his subordinates too, including a crippled and helpless soldier I had purposedly spared. Sure, the game treated killing that guy like a great victory, but I just shut the game off and never opened it again. It doesn't matter how fun the gameplay was. If you force me to kill the helpless, much less tell me I WON'T have to, I can't keep playing.

I wonder if there's any other games that let you avoid hurting enemies ...?

Figured it out on my own through my own persistance and determination. I refused to use the attack option at all so I just kept at it.

I'm probably the anon that the others are talking about, though I know someone else also made the recipe.

It's basically like pumpkin pie, except with butterscotch cinnamon. The cinnamon's mainly in the crust (which makes it not bland like most pie crust), while the filling is mainly the butterscotch, with hints of the nutmeg and cinnamon.

It's not as sweet as I expected, but that's a good thing, actually. It's sweet, but not to the point of being cloying.

- I first played that part in the demo but I do remember Flowey practically giving you a direct hint that you can reload your save and fix that shit, which is still in the full game. A lot of people still spare Toriel the first time around though, since yellow names exist now and there was an NPC that said you might have to spare someone even without a yellow name.
- My only option to not die was fleeing because I ran out of healing items after every scripted attack she had, then I realized that was what you had to do since it resulted in something way different than a normal flee.
- At this point I learned to consider every single option given. I ended up dying over 10 times before finally deciding to fight.

I really like Papyrus and Sans, both their characters and their dynamic together. When Papyrus was first introduced, I thought he was gonna have one of those character arcs where he would come across as self assured, but actually be miserable or insecure, so it was refreshing to see him ACTUALLY be self assured, but a nice guy.
