Considering magic exists in the Underground, would it be possible for someone to go back to just before Asriel left with Chara, and stop him from doing so? Or even heal him just before he turns to dust in the ruins.

He doesn't deserve his fate at all. He was tricked by Chara into becoming the lackey he'd need when he could posses another human. All Asriel did was help his brother, is that so wrong as to warrant eternal limbo?

I also seem to remember someone saying that when a monster ages (Which Toriel and Asgore both do), they pass a small piece of their soul on to their offspring. Does this mean that, eventually, after his parents have died, Asriel will be reborn with a new soul?

But the "abomination containing his memories" thing is a great way to describe it. What Flowey is is a flower that sprouted from the ashes where Asriel died, and then that flower was artificially injected with DETERMINATION by Alphys.

It was a thing "neither human nor monster" that acquired the will to live and self-preserve. It has no soul.

The only reason Asriel takes his goatlike form at the end and is able to talk to you like a sane person is because he temporarily has something like a replacement soul after absorbing everyone in the underground during the battle.

God, this game's story is a clusterfuck and hard to explain.

I don't see why he wouldn't add it then, it's basically mercy to the extreme. The message behind the mercy ending is not "Tumblr says be nice to everyone" as some people think, it's "what right do you have to take another's life?"

Giving up your (Frisk's) life to save Asriel would be the ultimate mercy, because it would properly bring Asriel back to life (Which would obviously be a great thing for Toriel and Asgore), finally freeing him from his torture.
