In whole MegaTen the setting is "reality except superscience magic summoning".
From the very first novel, through Nocturne where it's the spooky ritual ending the world, through Persona 1 where almost everything is sourced to a) DEVA system and b)Persona ritual; I haven't played 2, but it's straight continuation of 1 afaik; up to 3 where it's Kirijo group thinking it's great idea to pierce dimensions and gather spooky blobs for science.
It's always people doing explicit stuff to meddle with supernatural which sets the plot up and usually bites them in the ass. In 4 it pretty much boils down to "I've made this yolosagiri discoball long time ago for no reason" "I've heard three people's thoughts and gave them personas because" and "I'll tell everyone about this rumor about people appearing on TV, also for no real reason"
It just doesn't sit well with me.

Yes. You look at every available option you have to fuse. Of course you can ignore the stuff 10-20 levels lower than your current level to speed it up.
