Nothing except it still uses an "outdated" method of selecting servers to play on. That is easily what killed it before it ever had a chance to become popular. Also it takes too much coordination and skill for your average contemporary gamer.

marines with good aim shit on aliens, so they decided to design the game around putting the marines at 'just the right amount' of a disadvantage via overbuffing alien abilities and map layout favoring aliens.

a good marine commander can completely swing the tide of battle however a good alien commander can pretty much only solidify a victory that was already coming.
