If you don't enjoy a game you shouldn't play it. WHY you enjoy a game is entirely up to you. Some people dig the competition. Some people enjoy mobage gacha shit. If you don't want to consider people who play certain types of games to be gamers that's perfectly fine too. I have 0 respect for people who play sports games exclusively. Those are games, and they're technically gamers, but to me they're less than human filth who can't appreciate all of the things I like about games.

So there's always going to be a divide between how seriously people play games and what those people try to get out of the games.
>>
>"Wow. I spend literally my entire entire life competing with others for education, human relationships, and employment."
>"I should totally waste my free time competing with other people digitally, instead of enjoying an escape from reality and the hardships of having to improve myself more-so than the next person, lest I be thrown to the wayside for the newer model."

You're doing it wrong, OP.
>>
>>383873586
Yeah starcraft is so much for dudebros only
>>
Find a balance.
>>
Competition just seems inherently unsatisfying to me. If I win against one guy, he was probably just shit. If I win against 100 people, they were probably casuals who haven't invested as much time in the game as me. If I win against 1000 people, there's still tons of people out there who are way better than me. If I somehow become the best in the world at the game, there's other games out there with fiercer competition. If I become the best in the world at the most competitive video game, it's just a fucking video game. Trying to be better than others only works if you're the absolute best in the world, or if you pretend the people who are still better than you don't exist.

I can see the appeal in continually improving yourself, but I can get that from playing challenging single player games, without worrying about falling behind if I skip practice.
>>

those who do enjoy competition tend to do better in life than those who don't, for obvious reasons but you can't really change who you are
>>
>>383873035
I'm almost 30 and have never enjoyed competitive games but play everything. If anything fuck all the "nu-gamer" wannabe e-sports bandwagoning kids calling themselves "gamers" who only play League or Overwatch and have only started < 2 years ago. Competitive gaming was a mistake.
>>

>>
>>383873218
I've been wondering about this. When I try to git gud at something, I prefer it to be a completely new game with unfamiliar mechanics. When I start to get a handle on it, I get bored and want to move on to something fresh. But when I look at competitive players and speedrunners, they got a handle on it ages ago, and they just keep going to perfect their skills, practicing the same thing over and over again for hours to make microsecond improvements to their reaction time.

Is it a preference thing? Do competitive players like the routine of practice more than the novelty of a fresh challenge? Or do they just care so much about becoming better that they're more willing to put up with the boredom? Which of these is more autistic?
>>
today's competitive games aren't up to the quality of the competitive games made 15~20 years ago
matchmaking and progression ruined camaraderie, rivalry, and playing the game for any purpose other purpose than a flashy number popping up saying how good you did

Competitive games are good for the industry. It triggers something in your lizard brain that makes you keep playing and buying. Since you can't go pillage a village anymore you do it virtually when you dominate others. Of course this isn't thought of consciously but it's there. These people hire shrinks and mathematical scientist to squeeze every penny out of your pocket.
>>
>>383877668
Then life isnt worth living without fun

Although true there is still a significant difference. You can compete with a friend to see who wins more at a slot machine. Yes, okay. Or you can go head to head at a game of poker or 21. The latter requiring skill and understanding of the game to be good at it. Games always gets you triggered when you lose or win and released levels of dopamine between games gets you hooked.

Getting good at a competitive multiplayer game isn't the same as speedrunning. You don't just play over and over again for micro improvements on reaction times and execution. Take fighting games for example. Play over and over again and you'll be doing the same shit for months without improving at all. The active search and discovery of tricks and strats is what improves your game.

I fucking feel this. I love me some multiplayer, but only for a bit. I get bored quickly, and stop improving. If I'm playing something for a long time, I need it to be towards a tangible goal, or for whatever external purpose usually related to my own psyche. I can't stand playing the same multiplayer game for more than a week or two, and I have only done one speedrun for a game that had the true ending behind it, and it was one of the worst experiences of my gaming life.
>>
>>383873035
Competitive games are always full of the biggest fuckwits. At some point you realise the only way to stop being yelled at by kids is to stop playing games with kids.

>>383880042

>Liberals are like rabbits cause they have a lot of kids
>Conservative, and especially religious people, tend to have more children than liberals

Really makes you think
>>
>>383880204
I even have trouble with this. In a game with lots of characters, like a fighting game or moba, I might gravitate to a character or two, usually more on design than functionality, but I wind up using a good chunk of the cast substantially.
>>
Does anyone else feel like they're getting less competitive as you get older? I'm 25, and I just can't be bothered to be competitive these days.
>>
>people want to have fun in their free time
>this is bad
Being overly competitive in multiplayer games can end up making you hate vidya, people and yourself

I got way to into League of Legends to the point where I was playing solely to climb. I got to high Diamond before I had to stop. I was angry all the time, I wasn't playing champions I enjoyed playing but the "good" ones and I instantly distrusted and hated every person I played with.

You keep playing to prove to yourself and faceless people that you aren't shit and are better than them

>>383880204
Go play tekken 7 on ranked. You'll know what I mean when you get bopped by people in orange and red ranks. And I'm not talking about just losing the match. When you face someone that far ahead of you, you won't win a single round. Hell, you might not even take out half their life on any of the matches. When that happens, it tells you that the player knows way more about the game than you do. You think you already know everything, but that's because you don't know what you're missing until someone rams it up your asshole.
>>
>>383875223
You're implying competetive gamers have any of that first bit
>>
>>383880042
this picture is the dumbest bullshit ever.
There is very few grass in the winter
Rabbits are very territorial and has a high need of social interaction with their in-group

In a wolf pack only 2 wolves (The alpha male and the alpha female) are allowed to have sex
If you put that into politics only trump and his wife are allowed to procreate while all the conservatives must wait their turn.
>>
>>383880430
This.
My skills at FPS games are quite high but i don't like when people force me into competitive playstyle.
Sure i will rek them but it's not enjoyable whatsoever.
Oh and if i don't i will go negative k/d or something because these types of people don't care and want to roll everyone in the lobby and get insanely high score to feel good about themselves.

Ive never met a person that was into competitive games that wasnt a piece of shit.
>>
>>383880430
I'm 25 and also feel like that. Thing is I spent my younger life playing competitive games in a competitive way and as long as I applied myself I would pretty much always win.

It got kind of boring. So at some point I stopped trying. The only competitive game I play anymore is dota2 and that's just because my friends play it, even then I always do well and win more than I lose.

It's understandable that young people want to play competitively though. I know the feeling.
