Nothing since even comes close to the experience of this generation. Even the console side was great. If you had an Atari 2600 everyone on your block would want to come over to your house to play it. At the same time kids were having a lot of fun with multiplayer on N64, which was a BIG deal back then. This was essentially when the whole concept of kids having sleepovers and just staying up and playing games all night became a thing. Nobody really did that in the previous gens. So that was a fun thing, and I know a lot of /v/ remembers it fondly, understandably so. Portables were SHIT from an adult perspective, but fun from a kid's perspective (read: they were Pokémon players).

Adults starting migrating away from PCs and back into console gaming. Portables are still shit. Kids start taking over internet gaming sites and "gaming culture" becomes synonymous with "internet culture". Xbox brings foul mouthed little fucks to the world and ruins online gaming on consoles (which was doing fine on PC though). Overall a mess of a generation, but with amazing games. The overall quality of the "culture" depends onyour feelings about "internet culture" at the time.
