Realism and realistic artstyles needs to be banned from videogames for good now. It's been proven for sure now that realism sucks for the following reasons:

-the character designs are always boring as fucking shit(looking at you Arkham Knight and CoD)
-Environments are always boring as fucking shit(see above games)
-Gameplay tends to be boring as fucking shit


Meanwhile look at the slew of new moba shooters being made, all but one uses a cartoony style and look way better for it. Cartoony styles mean much better character designs, more fun gameplay, and actual COLORS. Cartoony styles also age way better, look at Batman Arkham Knight, that game recently came out and already looks outdated graphically, in another year's time that game is gonna look like early ps2 type shit in our eyes. Meanwhile fucking Wind Waker is still one of the best looking video games graphically of all time, due to the cartoony artstyle.

Realism is shit, Cartoony wins, and is what video games were meant to look like. You want realism? Get off your ass and go the fuck outside.

For example, UT is not meant to be realistic, or realistic looking, but the techniques used allow the user to better relate the the visuals they're seeing, increasing immersion.

Realism in video games defies gameplay variety, though. Witcher 3 is cool and all and a nice decision making game but from a level design or gameplay point of view, it's absolutely mediocre compared to Zelda, same goes for most mature and realistic games.

When your game has a "cartoon style" and doesn't go for a serious tone, you can do absolutely everything which basically offers unlimited gameplay and level design possibilities. Stuff like in this pic (Deku bud shooting player 50 feet into the air)

would never be accepted in Souls or Witcher, probably not even in a darker Twilight Princess style Zelda.

Only an absolute idiot who should never even be allowed to make threads on /v/ would fantasy games to be realistic.

Realism only works for very, very few games.
