So, since it looks like the star citizen generals over at /vg/

So, since it looks like the star citizen generals over at /vg/ either got banned or just died off, I'll post this here.

I was a White Knight for CIG. For $94 million dollars of crowdfunded money, I defended them to the death here, at /vg/, at reddit, and at somethingawful. I called Derek Smart a liar and a con-artist. Despite the total lack of progress on anything resembling an actual game over the past four years, I kept fighting the good fight against "haters" and "trolls."

No longer.

On the latest Around the Verse video, DiscoLando walked through the expansion to their Santa Monica location. One of the most expensive places to maintain a studio in the world. They're building a motion capture studio there. Only they spent millions to build their own motion capture studio back in 2013, according to dozens of posts on the website. Then they did mocap at some other studio (oddly enough, owned by one of Chris Roberts' childhood friends) instead. Then they paid millions to do a 60-day shoot at Imaginarium (Gollum actor Andy Serkis' studio) to do full performance capture. And they spent tens of millions on Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, and others.

Then they post a new promo video of an Avenger rescuing an escape pod... only I recognized it, called out DiscoLando in the comments, and he was forced to admit that they reused a year-old promo video, claimed it was footage of the upcoming update, and that it didn't actually represent anything you'd be able to do in the game.

So no more. I realize I've been defending Chris Roberts and his harridan wife in their shady attempt to revive their Hollywood dreams, all on my dime. Now I wanna tear this shit down.
>>
How did you feel when you realized Derek Smart was the good guy all along?

kek you guys have a good cult there. why do you want to destroy it? let people have fun praising something that doesnt even exist.
>>
They also have around a dozen shell companies in five countries, the officers of those companies are high-level people in on the billion-dollar Gizmondo scam, and they haven't provided the UK government with their legally-required financial accounting statements, which actually makes crobizzle a literal criminal if he doesn't do so by the end of the month (they'll be a full year late on December 1st, which would make him criminally liable and open to unlimited fines; they're already spending backer money on the escalating monthly fines for not filing). Shady shit all around.
>>

>Then they did mocap at some other studio (oddly enough, owned by one of Chris Roberts' childhood friends) instead.
Okay, so, how the fuck is this fraud isn't on trial yet? Is it because it's "just video games"?
>>
>>315602062
it hasnt even been 3 years since the kickstarter ended. just because croberts spent a year and four million of HIS OWN MONEY prototyping and designing doesnt mean it tacks a year onto development. and duh, the original plan was 3 million crowdfunded and ~20 mil from investors, so when they make 88+ million of course the scope will expand and the time to complete will increase. fucking duh.
>>
But I thought the guy liked space games.
Doesn't he want to finish the game?
Or is it all a ruse to fund this "hollywood dream" you're talking about instead?
I guess he wants to make up for the failure of the wing commander movie?
>>
>>315602323
there's practically zero oversight or regulation of crowdfunding. roberts can shit out a broken squadron 42 with 10 hours of cutscenes and five secobnds of gameplay, call it feature complete, and enjoy his new life as the owner of a $30 million mocap studio in santa monica.
>>
>>315602483

He produced a few films (notably Lord of War), then got blacklisted when he broke a contract with Kevin Costner and failed to pay him $8 million he owed him. Got sued and blacklisted by United Artists. Had to sell his production company.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-10-12-star-citizen-hires-hefty-hollywood-cast-for-squadron-42

Fourth video down Roberts himself says the shoot took 66 days (they had to pay a premium because they got squeezed in between Avengers 2 and the new Star Wars) at the most expensive full-motion capture studio in the world. And with that cast, even at scale (minimum rate, which would surely be way less than Oldman would accept) the shoot had to cost upward of $12-15 million. All for shitt mocap. In a spaceship shooting game.

>>
>>315603894
Technically speaking, when you back a project on kickstarter you are pre-ordering the finished product, not investing in the company making the project. You are also accepting the possibility of it not meeting your expectations. The whole point of crowd funding is that if the venture goes tits up, your backers all only lose a few dollars instead of you losing your house and car. You are passing the financial risks on to the crowd rather than shouldering it all yourself.
>>
>>315604504
>I wonder what'll become of the guys who put in thousands of dollars when this whole thing blows up. Could they band together and sue the pants off of Robert in such a situation or does the crowdfunding nature make him immune to lawsuit?

If he craps out a broken prototype he's probably in the clear.

As for what will become of them, I imagine at least a couple will kill themselves. There are tons of people who reported spending $15.000+ on all the ships, including a guy whose wife left him over it, and a bunch of people who admitted they spent tons of federal disability money on it because they are sadbrains shut-ins who can't face the real world.
>>
>>315604504
It's crowd funded and they are not investors, so no, their legal options would be very limited if they wanted to sue. By signing on to the game they agreed that the money was being given to CiG in good faith rather than under legal contract of completion. The court would probably just tell them that they shouldn't have spent $12,000 on in-game space ships if they didn't understand the risks.

Why are they building a huge new studio office to house a bunch of new employees they're hiring, if the point of SC is to just take the money and run?

For fuck's sake, make up your minds people. If the game really was going to fail, either Chris Roberts is a con-artist or he is incompetent with money. How is Chris Roberts supposed to run away with $100 million while simultaneously spending it? That's not a very profitable con.
>>
>>315608336
And that's obviously bullshit. That's not how kickstarter campaigns work.
And even if what you say WERE true, than it proves it to be a scam just as well as stretch goal money disappearing on Roberts' personal bank account.
What if the project got funded but didn't attract the required millions from investors on the side? Deliberately setting the goal for your project lower than it needs to actually be done is a fraud.

>Did they release this on time?
The dogfighting module was released like a year late.

It was supposed to come out like Dec. 2013.

When it came out it was featureless with laughably bad combat phsycis.
>>
>>315608357

I'm still firmly convinced it's the latter. He's Tim Schafer with bigger numbers. He got way more money than he'd initially expected and is now trying to spend all of it, frequently on things that won't significantly improve the game.

Following the pattern I would expect the game itself to be okay but not great, and everyone to be disappointed because of the amount of money and hype they've thrown at it.
>>
>>315608981
Most of us are just shitposting out of boredom until something interesting happens. /scg/ is dead and /mwo/ isn't much better either, though that's our own fault really.
>>
>>315608229
Most CoD games took 2 years to make. Two studios worked on a game and it got a yearly release. Only BO3 took 3 years because they have another studio in the boat now.

Still apples to oranges because they don't have to start from zero each time.
>>
>>315608357
I reckon they're just incompetent at developing their game on schedule and aren't so very good at money. There really should be something that at least resembles a full video game being paraded around by now, given that they've supposedly been working on it for three years.

For example, Elite: Dangerous (which admittedly promised far, far less than SC but it's a very similar kind of game) started their Kickstarter in December 2012, and the full game released in December 2014. If they can make an entire game in 2/3 of the time, then Chris and Co. should have been able to make at least a considerable chunk of theirs.
>>
>>315605474

It is called embezzlement.

When you build your own mocap studio for a massively inflated price, then go and use your "friends" to do the actual mocap, what you are actually doing is pocketing all of it in a round about way.
>>
>>315608357
Did you seriously think that people calling it a scam were being literal?
>>
>>315609068
It wasn't a year late, however only the earliest backers had access to it because it was invitation-only, and invites were sent out based on when someone pledged. The first backers got to try a very early build, and as they ironed out the stabilization problems and put more servers online, they sent out more invitations until everyone was able to play. It was a few months late, but not nearly as late as you are implying.
>>
>>315609064
But you have literally no proof to back up your claims. You're getting all heated up about what you or the hivemind perceive to be a scam but don't have a single fact to back it up.
>>
>>315609169

>>
>>315608112
They traditionally have had two different teams, Infinity Ward and Treyarch, who released CoD games alternate years(two year dev cycle).

There were some shenanigans a few years ago that resulted in there being 3 teams working concurrently.

Activision merged Neversoft into Infinity Ward to shore it up long-term after two of the co-founders were shitcanned and half the staff walked out.

Sledgehammer Games, who were initially brought in to help after the shitcanning and walkout situation(they helped finish Modern Warfare 3), ended up developing Advanced Warfare. Infinity Ward + Neversoft went on to make Ghosts.

Raven Software did the multiplayer for the last few non-Black Ops CoD games.

Treyarch continued developing the Black Ops line of CoD games unimpacted by all of that nonsense.

There were Rainbow Six games, nothing of Star Citizen is out aside from tech demos.

I mean sure, Duke Nukem Forever took a long time, maybe Star Citizen will come out in 2050 too. Maybe. Its just not likely.
>>
>>315609779
So by your logic since previous R6 games exist , that means Siege isn't a scam.

Could I claim that since the Wing Commander series exists, Star Citizen isn't a scam?
>>
>>315609779

Stop avoiding the question. What proof do you have that Star Citizen is a scam?
>>
>people expecting him not to spend millions on actors and tech for Squadron 42
It's almost like you've never played Wing Commander III/IV
>>

Wing Commander series exists despite the involvement of the fuckface behind Star Citizen, not because of it though. There's no-one to save Star Citizen.

I remember stoking the fires of the Smart Wars on USEnet back in the day. It was great. Why is he still alive?

>tfw no mans sky is actually going to release

Life is good.

They asked the consumer to front the cost of development by selling .jpg's of ships that may not ever exist, for a game that may never be good.

But that's wrong. Most of those "jpgs" are fully modeled, textured, interactive, and flyable in AC and the hangar.

>may never be good

That doesn't make the game a scam. You're just calling the game a scam because you have a bad opinion of it.

Most of those packages only exist as concept art, as did those of which can now be interacted with.
>That doesn't make the game a scam.
Sure it does. You're knowingly being asked to give money to a man with no guarantee of quality or finalization on the agreed product. Why are you taking a gamble with an obvious disadvantage?
>>
>>315612060

It would be a scam if that man ran off with the money or pissed it all away, but that hasn't happened. Money is going into the game's development, whether or not you agree with the game's direction.

Some of the packages are only concept so far, yes, but not most. And that doesn't prove your point at all. If it were a scam, Chris Roberts fucked up by accidentally spending millions of his scam bucks on actual development.
>>
>>315612901
I'm not calling it a literal scam anon, just using the word to convey a similar idea. Obviously chris isn't trying to be underhanded about any of this.

Roberts is converting all of his liquid KS money into assets he can sell for a profit later. Or he could simply not do anything and just decide to live of his new mocap studio's profit instead of actually making the game.
>>
>>315614584
Or he could just make the game in live from the money he makes there. Like, maybe perhaps? You know that's an option, too?
