It would be worthwhile to play Super Turbo, Alpha series, or 3 online if you were going to prepare for 5.
Super Turbo HDR and 3 have console versions you can get on PS3 and 360 but I don't know how many people still play HDR. Plenty of people still play 3 plus you have close to 20 years of resources to figure out everything about it.

Better to play with other people who don't know what they're doing because if one of you pull off something cool it's exciting and the battle's are all over the place trying to get stuff to work.

>>
>>315547341
A cancel is when you cancel the animation recovery of an action for whatever reason, if you ever played a 3D platformer game chances are you've done a lot of jump cancels.
>>
As soon as you explain why you're on /v/ instead of playing video games.
>>
>>315547489
The recovery? I thought it was cancelling an action before it even finished.
>>
>>315547479
Well have fun then, and hope the SFV's netcode is better than IV. Also to answer your other question, no you don't need a fight stick, fight stick is for people who learned how to play on arcades, it won't automatically make you play better, play with whatever you feel comfortable with, many pro players play with Xbox 360 controllers for example.

Nigga "gud" is not an end. That kind of thinking is what gets people to 5 million BP and get stomped in tournaments in SF4.

Maybe that's why. They fuck up anything that isn't a fighter and when they lose a 1 v 1 game, they have to admit someone is just better than them at the moment and they just want the quickest way to being the "better" player.

Anyone who plays long enough will realize you just have to play more and do a little better, and there will always be people that can kick your ass.

Fighting games are like playing the guitar-everyone wants to be good at it, and it must be a great experience to be good at it, but it requires a shitload of effort, and even practicing simple chords every day is more fun than playing fighting games just to go into Training mode and practice ridiculous combos. At least, that's how it feels for a beginner.

>even practicing simple chords every day is more fun than playing fighting games just to go into Training mode and practice ridiculous combos

You don't need to d that at all. You can go VERY far with just simple combos, learning to play against other people is much more important after you learn the basic motions (which shouldn't take you that long).
>>
>>315553414
>>315553314
Pretty much. Everybody wants instant gratification and don't really understand the concept of losing based solely on their own lack of skill, so they immediately overreact or give up because it's unfamiliar territory.

It's just so hilarious how somebody asks "How do I become better at ____?" without stopping to think how silly that kind of question is. You get better at things by practicing, but modern gamers can't wrap their heads around this sort of things.

>At least, that's how it feels for a beginner.
Even if he doesn't (and I'm pretty sure he doesn't but I don't know) feel that way, a LOT of beginners think that to play a fighter you absolutely have to go to training mode and grind out combos to even think about competing. Hell, some of them prioritize that over learning how to block or properly move in the games.
>>
I don't find them to be all fun.

Whatever time I spend learning certain attacks or techniques is rendered meaningless when I when I go up again skilled CPUs or human players and from there it becomes button mashing.

>>
>>315554102
Hush, playing CPUs on the hardest difficulty is fine when you're literally just starting out. They're automated so you can get a basic idea of what beats what and some good defense practice.
>>
>>315554102

But that's true. You wouldn't stand a chance in a tournament if you couldn't do maxdamage combos.
>>
>>315553314
>>315553817
I understand that I have to practice, and I don't even need to win. I just want to put up a fight. But I just don't know where to start practicing. Blocking? Combos?

It's just difficult throwing yourself into this when everyone else is so much more experienced. The opponent blocks me and then combos me to death, I don't even know how to react.
>>
>>315554250
I just found it funny he used the word skilled for CPU opponents.

>>315554315
You may not get top 8 at evo but you can do a lot with just simple combos if you are very good. Once you play to the point of being that good, spending a biut of time in training to learn a better combo won't be much t you anyway.

>>315554515
What's the difference between zoning and spamming?
>>
>>315554315
We're talking online right now, most people's ambitions end with winning 10 matches consistently. Blocking and proper movement will serve you much better than grinding out a bunch of long combo strings here.

>>315554372
What you need is a good universal damage dealer (like a normal or 2 into a special move) and a short way into your DM/ultra/overdrive/distortion/whatever. After that, learn to not fold under pressure like mashing or whatever.

Spamming doesn't exist is the difference. Play scummy as fuck and don't give two shits about what any bitch niggas have to say about it, especially these days since it's online and you don't have to worry about getting shanked behind the arcade because you tick throwed one too many times.
>>
>>315554372
Don't try to focus on everything at once. Try to focus on one thing and improve that one. Like for example play a session focusing on trying to defend better, another on trying to work on your pressure, another on your fireball game and spacing etc. You can't learn everything at once, have to go bit by bit.

When you lose to something THINK ABOUT WHY YOU JUST LOST. If you jumped in someone's anti air then you can realize you just got desperate and tried to land your jump in, so next time you'll think twice before jumping. If you keep getting grabbed realize you have to learn how to deal with grabs and look at how the opponent sets them up etc.

It's slow, it takes time, just keep at it.

Don't listen to them. The FGC are idiots who only want to keep out newbies but don't want to admit that everything about them is mechanically far more unintuitive than practically every other genre. If the games actually showed you why, say, you stuffed up a given input, or displayed hit/hurtboxes for you in game, or gave you a single player mode that progressively challenges your understanding of the game, acknowledged basic mindgames, or even just gave a proper walkthrough of the basic mechanics, there wouldn't be quite this issue. Instead, most of this shit is just invisible, and you're expected to just understand it all up front.

Fighting games and Smash is the only kind of games that interest me any more. Why? because i only enjoy competitive games. Shooters i suck at. MOBAs i just really don't care for. And i love the idea of learning fundamentals and things you can do when you get in certain situation and then sometimes doing something different to throw you opponent off their games. and then picking your character based on how you play and counter picking your opponent. For some reason this is all so damn fun to me. Its like every character is a deck of cards and you can play any card you want and also playing Rock Paper Scissors all at the same time. Any way, i like to think i'm pretty good at fightan gaims

This. What most of the FGC won't tell you is that you only get good if you play against other players of similar skill level. Getting stomped by someone 10 times as good as you won't teach you much.

3rd strike is a crapshoot, I don't even mean that in "3S is shit" kind of way, either you fight someone else who is on your level, or you fight someone who knows what they're doing which essentially means every option you can use is shut down because of parrying and the juggle system.

Ive been playing Tekken all my life ever since Tekken 2. The reason why i havnt perfected my skills is because ever since I started going online ive realized that fighting games are too spammer friendly, character learning curves are horribly unbalanced (i mastered paul in 2 days and got to warrior in 4, (ive played all my life as kaz and im still a fighter after 2500 online games and months of training) and berserker with asuka in 2 days. These kind of games rely way too much on guessing and memorizing as oposed to having skills or fun, and punish players for trying new things.

Tl;dr: fighting games are exactly the same as playing short matches of csgo. They are only fun when you win, skill is the smallest winning card and theres way too much memorizing shit. Looks like a job.

>>
I didn't like SF4 very much, so I just didn't play it. Then when I tried Ultra on PC the transition to Steamworks apparently fucked it up, causing lots of lag when I tried playing. I heard that it eventually got fixed but ended up driving most people away.
Xrd is cool, but it's too hard online and I stopped having fun losing. I don't feel good about giving up on it, but it felt kind of like trying to learn boxing by hopping in the ring with a semipro welterweight. I didn't see any reason to stick around.

Easy. Using characters with easy and effective mixups and spamming a series of combinations, every now and then switching to others.
Check jin in tekken, not many people use him because his juggling and launchers are weak (besides ewgf ofc).On the other hand, he has the best parry in tge game and superb poking. But he isnt very spammer friendly and is complicated, a great and fun character whicj requires skill.
Now lets look at lars: some of the safest launchers, best mixups, best crushers, great juggling damag, really fast and easy mixups and poking. Low skill yet easy to win with.
In the end you see 10 times more lars in mp than Jins.
Competitive wise. Why do you think Knee stopped maining Bryan Fury post tt2 nerf? Why do you think Scarfman in smash always uses the best char and never gets a main? Its all about picking a character with easy mixups and spacing and spamming the fuck out.
No skill just memory and luck.
>>
>>315560758

you're about 18 years too late to want to play catch up, on occasion you can find another beginner, but most players are pretty firmly familiar with the game.
>>
>>315560758

you can get USFIV dirt cheap somewhere since it was in the humble bundle like 2 weeks ago.

because it's always muscle memory and who can pull of their memorize combo first without failed input as oppose to any true test of skill, there's 0 critical thought or strategy involved. dark souls is better, chess is better, fighting games are a joke

What were your biggest walks when learning? In playing Skullgirls for my first fightan, and I think I more or less am learning how to defend better, but when I get an opening, I'm never sure what to do. Or even to tell when I have an opening.
>>
>>315557670
F-Roa

Why?
>>
>>315564592

hitconfirms, in skullgirls it's a lot easier, let's take valentine for instance.

Her hits take so long to end, so if you do cr. LP into st. MP -> MP you have a gorillion frames to know if they're blocking or not. If they are blocking, call out an assist and go for the mixup, if not, cr. HP into your loops.

This is much easier in skullgirls with chains so everyone has a silly way to make sure they hit, like painwheel can just fly cancel if they're blocking, or peacock can set up a shadow/teleport to safety

It's good for tying directly into ultra.

The EX version is short range but the super-armor should work against anyone trying to chip you in the corner.

You can steal a lot of rounds that way. Karakusa into SEICHUSEN GODAN-ZUKI!

Same way some people just don't like recent anime, some people just don't like anime fighters

little too dramatic for me to get into the gameplay
>>
>>315544964
its not a genre you can get better just by playing with other people like shooters and mobas and smash
you have to spend a lot of time in the practice room playing by yourself just to learn the basics, and even more just to get decent at the game so its not a really friendly genre for new comers
only saving grace is fighting games have great character design, and once you're decent at one game you're decent at most of the others
but over all you'll never be great at them unless you waste a lot of time just playing by yourself wiggling a joystick

What makes Smash a fighting game? We don't call beat em ups fighting games and they're more like the genre than Smash. The only similarities Smash has to the genre is that you have a dude and you attack the other dude. Smash has vastly different level design, win condition, tactics, and strategy. The way you play the games are nothing alike.
>>
>>315568778

I beat the shit out of this zangief player over the course of 2 matches, I could hear him getting frustrated over the mic, so he swapped to his 6,000BP abel and started shouting "DISRESPECTED" every time he got a hit in, he ended up winning a fairly even match but I found it kind of funny how butthurt he got over that and how he felt the need to commentate his own match with passive shittalking just to throw me off.
>>
>>315566220

The only real barrier Bedman has is his command air dash stuff. Granted, that one is awkward as hell to get used to, but Bedman has the additional bonus of nobody knowing the matchup vs a character WHOM YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED TO KNOW TO EVEN COMPREHEND WHAT IS GOING ON.

Overcoming that is the best part but starting at a deficit and trying to pass all of these hurdles is not fun. It also seems that the time I spend in the lab practicing is not doing much for me.I'll figure out something but i'd be lying if I said I wasn't lost.

>>315571590
Only real way I know of is to sit there and grind your ass off till you become proficient in one. If you have the basic fighting game skills by that point (which you should) you should be able to more easily jump into other shit.

You also gotta take fighting game type into account. Being good at MvC3 doesnt mean youre going to be good in MK or SF or some shit. Cant hurt, but doesnt necessarily help much.
>>
Hit a ceiling. Played them for years and years. Sometimes I would spend 10 hours at a time, sitting and playing Tekken or Soul Calibur online. I had to tape my fingers because I was actually starting to chafe from all the playing. But I was never actually very good. I wasn't bad, but really just above average. In SCV's online mode, the highest ranks are really just there if you grind for them, so I got to A1 in a month and stayed there for years, but again, never had better than a 55% winrate. In Tekken the ranking system is a lot more strict, and I think I only got to around the middle-tiers.

I think my problem is that I don't know how to analyze myself. I play on instinct and little else. If someone else was watching me and asked, "Why did you do that?" I'd have no answer to give them. I never really knew why I did any of the things I did, why I prioritized certain moves over others. I was especially bad at reading my opponents. My mixup game was absolutely abysmal, and I pretty quickly learned to just avoid them as much as possible. I guess I would just pick an outcome and go with that no matter what. In SC for instance, you can either do an A Grab or a B Grab, but I just instinctively reacted to an A Grab every time. If you did absolutely nothing but B Grab against me, you would probably win, because I did not want to play a guessing game at all. Part of the reason why I just fucking hate grappling characters in general.
>>
>>315572379
learning combos fast don't really make a good player

>>315572329

Play ranked/endless/offline multiplayer and treat it as training mode. Try all the stuff you practiced in an actual fight so you can see what works and who and when

Execution is literally spending hours in practice mode though
>>
ooga booga PC/PS3 lobby where?
>>
>>315544964
No locals and my internet isn't very good so I have a hard time with playing online.
>>
>>315572496
True you're right. But I hate it when it takes me like a week to learn and to SOMETIMES pull off a decent bnb in a anime fighter.

It makes it really hard to play. The system mechanics is just reading up and brushing up on your knowledge. I spend the time in the lab and get tired of it and just say fuck it and go against my nerves then I get beat like I never did anything at all and you have a guy just come a say "just be urself and practice :)" It makes me depressed.

>>315572502
I'm trying to get into anime fighters. Confirming and converting is a huge part of these games. Its also my weakest part. If I touch someone and I convert ~12% besides someone with a optimal combo that converts a mixup or a poke to 30%+ damage. You can see how that snowballs quick.

>>315572675
I don't want to be a training dummy set to no block for some reason I seem to play horrible when I go online. I try to apply what I learned and I get too focused on doing it.

I don't want to say fighters aren't for me but i'm stumped.
>>
>>315573349

They do but it really doesn't change the tide of fights if the opponent is better than you. They can even be baited by a skilled player.
>>
>>315568891
>We don't call beat em ups fighting games and they're more like the genre than Smash.

How? There you generally wail upon predicable opponents who don't have spacing matches with you and don't have anything like Smash's physics, which also shares block-stun/frame advantage resulting in the mutual back and forth that makes the game work. You don't get that in 'brawlers' or FPS knife fights.
>>
because you need to spend hours to just learn how to do the fundamentals and inputs
>>
>>315575284
that's pretty much relevant to any competitive genre minus special inputs
>>
>>31554496
Because I've got better games to play.
>>
>>315575548
No other competitive genre punishes you so hard immediately for not understanding all of its mechanics. In a FPS you can still move around, even if you get your face shot in later, in fighting games your opponent can easily shut down all your options, especially when just jumping in a direction can screw you over.
