In the story of his game?

I'd say he was pretty damn important. Hundred Knight helping Metallia is the central concept that moves the story forward throughout, without him she can't do shit for most of the game, and he's is the main reason Metallia learns to open up to others, his decisions to act in certain ways (ignore being told not to fight the dark witches/decide not to save Metallia ) are the triggers for each ending too.

His inability to speak meant that he was passive in individual scenes, sure, and they ultimately characterize him as caring for Metallia a lot, and he's definitely central to the overarcing plot in several ways, so I'd say he's important.

Shame he's not in Disgaea alongside Metallia though.

unlimiters is an extra thing you get in chara world after obtaining Eclipse Power from killing carnage Void Dark. Eclipse Power stats cap every 300k or so and you need to run chara world to uncap it. They're not that important though, you can hit 99m with 3 good traps anyway.

I've only played DD2 at launch but I've read it's gotten patches and mostly fine now.

Gameplay-wise it's very similar to D5 and no more RNG-based tedious stuff to progress in post-game. Also has one of the best Baals (if not the best, haven't really fought D5's one yet so can't say).

D4 vita still king when it comes to amount of content though, so fi you want to be busy for a while...

Was patched, though in my case I remember it crashing when using Flonezilla after the patch. However, loading you save, then loading your save again from the in-game menu seems to prevent crashes for some reason.

You may be better getting D4 on Vita. Who knows if there's gonna be DD2 on Vita, but you could play 4 while there's any announcements, if any.

Pretty sure Laharl is in every game in one way or another but he's only a main character in Disgaea one and Disgaea D2.

Laharl is the son of king kricheskvoy the former overlord who died recently.

Apparently Laharl was sick when he was young so his mom had to sacrifice her life to cure him however this left a hole in laharl's heart and for some reason his dad can't provide him this love so he hates him for some reason.
Apparently the prince had been asleep for about 2 years by the time the game begins. He originally only planned to sleep a week.

bad items / prisoners are handy for item assembly points and magic extracts

but the real reward for those is getting the Revenge Booster weapons given for killing the overlord in a R40 NW (they glow in yellow and have a unique name), but you can't get R40 ones until like chapter 15 or so

revenge booster gets you 20% revenge at the start of every stage, so you end up with chars nearly always ready to overload

going in those weapons is also an alternative to obtain the mystery room weapons (they appear in those too, not just regular R40 weapons)

Getting the carnage version of revenge weapons is a lot more work though, junk lv9999 chars will just keep dying doing research once reaching carnage R10+ or so. I had to send my own chars while doing chara world.

D5 also has no classes tied to doing new cycles, it's all quest-based and most can be obtained in chapter 1 even (except monsters and male angel -- people were unlocking them in the demo despite only 1 chapter)
