Honestly one of the better stories ever told in a video game.

>>315319717
I enjoyed it, the story was soo interesting the hide from the enemy segments actually felt boring and in the way.

Also i disnt feel like any of the monsters were frightening.
>>
>>315320635
Are you twelve?
>>
>>315319717
it has the best abyssal zone of any game
>>
>>315319717
It made me question my humanity alot

But im stuck at theta maintainist and idk where to go. I know i have to go all the way till i get to some door and shut it before the monster comes but idk where the door is
>>
>>315320732
Sorry, meant to quote OP >>315319717
>>
I met one of the developers some days ago. I could have asked about the game or development, but instead I asked about the Amnesia american cover art
>>
>>315319717
The story is great. The idea of the human being just a mind, and that we are nothing but bodies (Soma means body in latin), its really weird. Imagine if your dreams are real somewhere in another time/space period. When i finished the game, i had a dream about it, and the only thing i wanted to do was wake up. A horror game that can do that deserves credit
>>
>faggots pissing themselves over basic transhumanist concepts

None of this is particularly new, and the protagonists responses make him come off as amish or something
>>
Every single thing about this game was phenomenal except the gameplay itself.

One of my top 3 games of the year.

SOMA>System Shock.

SOMA = AMFP

sorry TDDfags but you're memes are shitty
>>
>>315322770
Shame Descartes came up with the idea hundreds of years ago.
>>
>>315328064
How is it a shame?
Is exploring those questions and ideas forbidden because we already did hundreds(actually even thousands)of years ago?
>>
>>315319717
For those that have seen it, you'll know what I mean. The ending was backwards. This is a horror game, it should've been swapped. Other than that, I enjoyed the heck out of it, for the walking simulator it was.
>>
>>315330325
the epilogue was unnecessary but it show both sides of the coin
>>
>I WAS A ROBOT THE ENTIRE TIME

wow so deep, never been told before

Not everyone is intricately familiar with transhumanism, bro.

It's the same reason everyone was so blown away by Bioshock Infinite and it's babby's first metaphysics, except Soma's story isn't total nonsense garbage.
>>
>>315331051
That's literally not even the twist.
>>
If you've taken a basic college level philosophy class, most of the ideas aren't that wowing at all.

Good story nonetheless

>>315331051
They spoil that within the first hour m8.
>>
>>315330325
>>315330886
Yeah actually I think it would've had more impact were things shown the other way around.
>>
>>315323486
>None of this is particularly new
The way it's presented in this game is. The way it revealed the fact that you're a robot was pretty damn cool.
>the protagonists responses make him come off as amish or something
Wat? How do you figure?
>>
>>315331051
Are you mentally disabled m8?
>>
>>315329584
not that anon, but I think his point is that it's such a trivial idea (unless you're brainwashed by religion or something similar to think that humans are somehow more than meatbags with the obvious centre of everything going on in your mind being the brain) that people figured it out hundreds or even thousands of years ago
>>
I watched about an hour of a half of let's play.

Youtuber was so obnoxious I had to stop watching.
>>
>>315331051
That is spoiled very early on and goes way beyond that because your body is 90% human and you're mind is an exact replica of a human's brain. The entire story is about what constitutes humanity and living. Is inserting a copy of yourself into a virtual world avoiding extinction? What about the 'you' that is left behind? Is it more convenient to forget they existed? When you learn about the guys who killed themselves and think how stupid they were, only to see first hand the original of yourself being left behind, it puts their thoughts into perspective.

The story and characters were all very good, if not as fleshed out as they should have been. The game's weakest point were it's puzzles and actual gameplay.

I watched the new episode of Fargo then played Soma then went to sleep and had a dream about the characters from Fargo getting their brains scanned and put in robots. Pretty weird...

fuck this shitty thread

post actual story driven games
>>
>>315332809
>The story and characters were all very good, if not as fleshed out as they should have been
Doesn't the game take place in less than a 24 hour period? Not everyone needs ground breaking deep changes and it actually was good that the MC remained a panicking complainer the entire time.
>>
So I saw the first hour of so of gameplay and it seems pretty obvious to me that the main character is actually a robot who just sees himself as human. Is this true? Does the plot hinge on this fact? Did I just ruin the story for myself?
>>
>>315332497
He came off as more retarded to me than amish or anything. Especially with the ending, you literally cover the whole 'your mind is being copied, not moved' shit a short while before the ending, yet he still turns into a complete sperglord when that twist happens.

The ending would have also been better if the order of the two sequences was reversed, the copied mind stuff playing out first and then the reality of the actual MC settling in after the credits.

Also the respawn mechanic made the gameplay shit, and ruined it for me in general.
>>
I feel like the monsters were completely unnecessary. The existential dread inspired by the story would have sufficed to keep the player on edge.

I still think Alien: Isolation was better.
>>
>>315336593
He was a basic civilian not a researcher he acted exactly as someone who a day earlier would be sipping coffee at starbucks and never even watched an anime before would act.
>>
>>315336568
You didn't ruin the game for yourself. It gets revealed pretty early that the main character is a robot.
>>
>>315336568
Pretty much. 9/10's of the game hinges on asking the player to question what it means to be human. Not that this matter though because humanity is completely dead.
>>
>>315319717
I couldn't finish it I got to the part where the robot is insulting me and sat there for 40 minutes electrocuting him.
>>
>>315336568
ending was literally "we have to put ourselves in space but were just making a 1:1 copy of ourselves but were still gonna be in the bottom of the ocean"
not worth your time, read a book or something, the gameplay isn't even fun and the story is not compelling
>>
In what order would you rank Frictional's games so far?
>Amnesia: Dark Descent
>Penumbra: Overture
>Soma
>Penumbra: Black Plague
>Amnesia: Machine for Pigs
>>
>>315337130
>sat there for 40 minutes electrocuting him
Y-you mean seconds right?
>>
>Incredible future technology
>Dude's mind is literally a floppy disk in a moving corpse
>Can't move the data around between machines
>Your pocket bitch literally does this the entire game, but tells you it's impossible

This is the biggest problem with the game. You plug her in, she gets put on the computer/device. Unplug her, take her elsewhere, plug back in, done. They had the same ability with the main character, seeing as his mind was nothing more than data, but oh no, it's not possible.

Unless they explained it and I missed the explanation, this is the biggest bullshit ending. The spooks and scares were pretty damn good though.

I haven't played one hundred percent, but if I recall, there is a "moral choice" you can make.
Maybe it would have been better to make it so that if you choose a certain option, the order of the final scenes change?
If I'm wrong, then so be it.

Machine for pigs was made by a different developer.

Soma is pretentious garbage for 12 years old kids who never read any sci-fi books.

Chappie did it better.

>>
>>315338106
I didn't know it was possible to stuff so many bad opinions into such a short space but by golly you showed me.
>>
>>315337917
It was interesting and all, especially after that fucking creepy robot girl chase, but it was cheesy as fuck. It let you believe that you literally jumped bodies and left an older copy behind, like shedding skin as a snake.

>DLC where you play as the abandoned body just after the diving suit leaves
>Never ever

>>315337924
>>315338148
Plug in the next body, have bitch type up her Todd Howard lies, you sit down and plug yourself in, wait all of one second, unplug self as new body. That's exactly what happened with the woman in the handheld , and they obviously had technology to copy, so moving data shouldn't be out of the question.

Because the developers of that garbage called SOMA have to pretend that their game is a horror story which is actually not true. Sci-fi part was awfully degraded adaptation of Watts and Egan's books. The game itself brings absolutely nothing from the authors' point of view because they are a bunch of dumb indie niggers.

So yeah Chappie does it way better.
>>
>>315338412
i think the power goes out in the facility at the end she won't be transferred to anything anymore
>>
>>315338412
No, what happened with the woman in the handheld is Simon physically removed the chip from the robot and put it in his tool. If you do it like you said, you kill yourself at the same time as you put a copy of your mind into a new body.

At the end the player is offered the choice that changes the future of the earth. We don't get to see that decision play out though so it doesn't matter in the context of the game. It's completely superficial.
>>
>>315319717
And it was fucking boring as shit. Godamn why don't just make a comic or whatever.
>>
>>315338739
They made a live-action movie about it that released at the same time as the vidya.

Same as SOMA.
Transhumanism and cloning your mind into a machine.

Did it better yo.

>>315339008
Because horror in SOMA is laughable and poorly executed. It's so bad and cliche it's actually scary they thought it's a good idea to even make it.
>>
>>315338214
Chappie is not a bad movie.
>>
>>315339243
