Main missions and Side Ops aren't all that different from taking quests and going into dungeons. You get a goal, go into the world, run around, collecting items, defeating enemies, and accomplishing your goal. You get rewards such as currency that you can use to improve everything, be it through getting more items, or upgrading passive effects through the Remake System or Mother Base. Barebones, I know. If you played the games back-to-back, you'd see what I mean minus differences like the stealth versus RPG battles.
