Silent Hill 1-4, which is the best?

3 for scariest
1 for close runner up for scary
2 for story
4 for burp

pretty much this

4 has a great underlying theme to it.

I love how 4 is generally regarded as good, but back when it came out, it was regarded as shit.

SH1.
Best balance of terror and mindfuck, best pacing, best town design, and actually scary as fuck.

>>315268407
I always enjoyed SH4. I did recognize its flaws even back then, but never considered it as "shit". After everything else that came afterwards, it feels like a fucking masterpiece.
>>
>>315265653
Quite accurate
>>
just got 4 working on windows 10 finally

way scarier than i remembered, walking around this subway station

though i remember it getting less scary and more annoying later on..

I always considered the game to get spookier towards the end, especially after half point, when your own room starts to get haunted.

I believe most fans were kinda biased against SH4 back in 2004, since so far the series had followed a single, working formula, but #4 was a complete overhaul in ever possible way.
>>
They are all good except 3.

3 is like a joke game with a dumb whiny bitch and stupid looking enemies.
>>
>>315268407
4 has a couple shit levels in the second half (Forest/Waterworld) and that's literally it.The 1st half, music, graphics, sound, story and characters are great.

It got shit on because it wasn't flawless like 2/3.

not him, but to me, SHSM was one huge, positive surprise.

As a big fan of the original SH, the idea of this western-made, Nintendo-exclusive (at the time) "remake", with Harry made to look even more nerdy and jewish, didn't quite sound right.

However, when I finally got to play it couple years ago, I was quickly hooked. No, it's not exactly that scary. Yes, it's ridiculously easy, especially the "puzzles". BUT, it has amazing atmosphere, and very interesting story.
I'd gotten the ending spoiled for me long before I played SM myself, but while playing it, I kept questioning those "spoilers" I'd read. That's how well I found the game to be constructed.

Later on I replayed it 3 more times in order to see different endings and events, and watched 2 other people play it all the way through as well. I was seriously surprised to see some totally new areas and things when watching them play.

tl;dr: SM is easily the best non-TS-made SH game, ironically because it tries its best to not recycle the old ideas and design. It's a neat experience, just a bit lackluster horror title.

Also anyone claiming that "it would be so much better without SH's name!" is just wrong. More than half of SM's appeal is the way how it keeps shattering YOUR memories, your expectations towards it.

SH1 is the best game in the whole series in general. Best and largest town sections, best main locations, best pacing, perfectly challenging, actually scary, great soundtrack. Lot's of replay value thanks to various endings and unlockables.

SH2 is the least scary and has poor pacing, but the symbolism + nice story make it a must-play.

SH3 is like a more modern SH1-lite, which suffers from linearity and pacing, plus bit from the recycling of SH2's areas. Perhaps the scariest game in the series in the pure-terror -way.

SH4 is quite underrated game. It's quite damn disturbing and spooky game, that only suffers of some gameplay design-choices, like how the limited inventory works and replaying old areas.

SH0 might've been interesting addition to the series, but the way it handles its themes and tells the story make it a big failure. It tries to "explain" things that didn't need explanation, and just manages to screws up the original lore & even logic! Has poor gameplay and recycles SH2 & Movie's elements

Homecoming = wasted potential. The first "next gen" SH game, that somehow ended up looking worse than the previous-gen games?? Tried to do the RE4 to SH-series, which technically means action-izing the gameplay, which really ain't the series' purpose. Looks and feels like a SH Movie -ripoff.

Shattered Memories got plenty of unnecessary flak even before it was released; I'm guilty of this as well. The moment you realize that it is not a remake of the original SH, but it's very own entity merely utilizing your own memories and expectations of things against you, the game actually becomes a fascinating, atmospheric experience. Cons: Not really scary and puzzles are poor.

Downpour sounded like it might FINALLY do a "next-gen" SH game right by not copying the heavily over-hyped SH2's themes or designs. Shame that the game still did recycle tons of SH2 material, while skipping a lot of that "subtle-ness". The gameplay, visuals and whole tech were broken as well.

4 is fine. Replaying the levels is its biggest flaw, as is having to escort Eileen because her A.I. is absolute dogshit.

However, the room haunting are a very nice touch, the story is actually quite well-made albeit hidden in notes and difficult to follow, the unkillable ghosts are a neat mechanic that always makes you feel uneasy, and the idea of being chained into your room from the inside is creepy.

In the final version, he's just a hikki that's been locked in his room for a week, suffering of nightmares all the time as well. That tends to do shit to people
>>
>>315275125
Nope. 2D controls are all you got in SH4.

While I'm OK with the controls, the game is a great example why this "more modern", "Alternative "control style does not click well with survival horror.

1's soundtrack isn't bad, but it's pretty much all ambience that is looped over and over for 2 minutes or longer. Some of it is actually just random metallic noises and weird sound effect just being looped.

It's not a problem in-game, but listening to it in a music player isn't really all that great.

Silent Hill 2. Silent Hill 3 is too frustrating to be either scary or fun, with enemies constantly knocking you down, and many of the environments are bland (except the subway). Silent Hill was more focused on horror, which it accomplishes the best out of the trilogy, but the PS1 graphics held it back and the story was incomprehensible.

I played it when it first came out back in 1999, and probably replayed it four times that year alone. As such, I kind of liked SHSM. But would people who only know SH2 and SH3 enjoy it as much? I'm unsure.

>least scary
Totally opposite.
>Talking shit about Heather

>easiest puzzles & bosses
totally depends on the difficulty you play. Also SH:SM has THE easiest puzzles and everything else.
>generally boring areas
can't find such creepy areas "boring". All the sections definitely were more interesting than SH2's apartments.

And this is coming from someone not that fond of SH3 in the first place. 1 > 2 > 3.

>>315280843
>But then would you say SHSM only appeals to fans of the first SH game?
Maybe so, however SH1 and 3 form this "whole picture" to which SM is kinda based on. It also should be illegal to play SH3 before 1.

One thing is for sure: without the knowledge of SH1 and having that as the comparison point, SM definitely loses a lot of its magic. You simply cannot expect for things to happen you don't know of.

Such a good game. My only complaint is how hard it is on Next Fear. The flying enemies and apes just fuck you over hard. The school is the worst, atleast you can get a shitfuck of ammo and use the shotgun as a main after playing the games enough.

they did. The dynamic lighting on PS1 ain't exactly an easy task to achieve, and the texture detail and variation is very impressive as well. Each shop and store in the town for example has an unique front, and that's just one of the many examples of dedication the game has.

now that you mentioned it, it is kinda neat little set piece of an location. I love when games add small, unique details, that are not used ever again for the whole game. Kinda adds to the realism as well.

the only enemies I remember knocking me down frequently were the dudes who crawled on the ground, and they only really appeared in two areas or so. There are ways to deal with them.

I thought the subway was the worst area in SH3, and I liked all of the other areas.

It's not incomprehensible, just requires more effort to understand than SH2 or SH3. If you were confused by SH1, you weren't paying attention.

And in case someone's once again new to this PC gaming stuff: Use a program like DaemonTools Lite to mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.

The "sh2proxy" works as a no-cd crack as well, and is included in the pack.

Silent Hill 1: One of the scariest pieces of media ever.

Silent Hill 2: The artistic peak of interactive horror.

Silent Hill 3: Spooky mindfuck.

Silent Hill 4: Imperfect, but very interesting experiment in interactive horror.

Origins: Not what we wanted, but a fine way to hold yourself over till the next numbered title.

Homecoming: Well, at least Silent Hill isn't dead.

Shattered Memories: This isn't Silent Hill. Where is Silent Hill?

Downpour: When are we getting Silent Hill back?

Book of Memories: Fucking what?

Silent Hills: Silent Hill is dead.

Silent Hill Pachinko: PULL THE LEVER!!!

They are all great games.

The problem with SH4 was the gamplay.

The story and the monster design in SH4 were great.

Also Walter Sullivan is the best villain in the series.

>shortest SH game

Every Silent Hill game is short. You can beat all of them under 2 hours if you know what you're doing, Silent Hill 3 is no exception.

>least scary

SH3 has spoopier imagery, monster design and environments, though I would say SH1 was the spoopiest out of all the originals.

>shitty MC that is poorly written and implemented in the game, her reactions are unnatural and make no sense

And Henry, James, and Harry make more sense? They all had their share of braindead reactions to the horrors of Silent Hill. Heather makes sense at least, since she's the reincarnation of Alessa who is no stranger to hell.

>easiest puzzles and bosses in the series

Shakespeare, the Heather-raped poem, Bird puzzle are among the hardest puzzles in the entire series. Bosses are hit or miss, but the Missionary and God on Hard or Extreme can give you a run for your money if you don't play careful.

>generally boring areas

I'd argue that the subway was the most boring area, but every location is unique and spoopy from the underground tunnels to the cult's other world church.

SH4 had its moments, but what made it not so scary for me were the rather lackluster areas. Forest and Prison world weren't that creepy, Subway and Prison were also annoying to navigate. I will say the game's spookiness peaked at Hospital World and declined again, but slightly went back up when returning to the Apartment world again.

>I believe most fans were kinda biased against SH4 back in 2004
Yeah. I only got into the series last year and played all 4 in a row. SH4 blew me the fuck away. Maybe because it's the one I knew the least about, maybe because my expectations were much lower, maybe because I'm autistic and agoraphobic just like Henry so I found him relatable. Having the room as a safe space where nothing bad happens and then watching it get haunted and corrupted was deeply horrifying. Moreso than any monster or scripted set piece that appears anywhere in the series.

I think Silent Hill 2 was the peak of the series.

>Strong story with interesting themes that people can reflect on
>Good length
>Interesting environments
>Fantastic instrumental soundtrack (no cheesy vocals)
>Multiple, significantly different endings
>Great puzzles

The only real negative with Silent Hill 2 is that some people find the enemy variety lacking.

Silent Hill 1 is good, but the story isn't as deep and the graphics are lackluster compared to the PS2 entries. Silent Hill 3 is better purely from a "terror" angle, but the story is weak, the game is short, and it reuses locations from Silent Hill 2. Silent Hill 4 is kind of mediocre but it had some interesting ideas. It's basically an unfinished game with an interesting premise and terrible gameplay.
>>
>>315301426
>SH1 graphics are lackluster
I know what you mean, but those graphics sort of help make the game a little more scary/creepy. The fact that you sometimes can't exactly make out what an enemy is supposed to look like makes it interesting.

>>315301426
I can understand that point of view, but to me SH2 is only a great literature experience, but a bit lacking horror experience.

The apartments is one of the series' weakest "dungeon" areas, and I've seen many people mention losing interest in that section already. For same reason, I find SH2 kinda hard to replay at times.

Similarly, the pacing of 2 kinda sucks. SH1 gets to the point almost instantly, surprises you mere five minutes into the game, and then allows you to do some minor exploration, always guiding you to the right direction though.

comparing visuals is kinda blow under the belt, especially when comparing pioneering 5th gen's 3D to the early 00's 6th gen visuals. That being said, I've always found Team Silents artists very talented, and SH1 already rocked art-directing and audio-design-wise. Like many seem to agree, those rough visuals in #1 can actually add to the overall atmosphere.

Finally, the biggest "sin" of SH2 is its laughably low difficulty, especially on the lower available difficulty modes. The "Normal" action difficulty is pretty much the SH1's "Easy", you literally cannot die to anything else than bosses on Beginner, and the "easy" puzzle difficulty renders most puzzles almost pointless.

To end my tiny rant, I must still remind that I fucking adore SH2. It's the one game I've discussed the most in the past 14 years, and I've beaten it some good 30 times. I see it as a pure art, but it's also kinda getting overrated these days.

Genuinely thinking of writing a mini-series with similar themes and atmosphere to these games (but not based in or around SH).

Horror and atmosphere can't properly be conveyed in 45 minutes, and most films aren't long enough to allow full immersion like the games provide. Three or four 90 minute episodes should be enough.

4 literally wasn't even supposed to be a Silent Hill game.

I still don't understand why everyone loves SH3 so much. Nothing about it was necessarily bad, but there was basically zero mystery to the series at that point, and it really offered nothing to the franchise outside of implying the monsters might not actually be monsters (which is absolutely retarded in every conceivable way, and if Kojima wrote that, people would be critically analyzing it to no end just to make sure everyone knows how dumb it is).

EU PS3s have shitty BC, which results some minor glitches in SH titles.

Any PC system made in past 5 years can run the PC ports. My old i3 + HD3000 laptop actually seems to run the game "better" than my i5+560ti PC, showing some effects that are missing on modern GPUs

>>315308153
HC is the RE4 of the series, except it sucks major ass.

SH1-3 use the traditional, Resi-style "tank controls", with the exception of being able to move and attack at the same time, and minor camera controls. If you have not played ANY game with these "3d controls", it may feel a bit overwhelming and clunky at first. But believe me: with those changing camera-angles, and the point of the games not being killing everything as quickly as possible (or at all), they simply are the better solution for true survival-horror titles.

HC, and every other SH game after the SH4, is also considered simply terrible compared to the original Team Silent's games. If you can get the PS2 versions (and console), play them on that. Otherwise, grab the PC ports from the links posted earlier ITT, and enjoy them in HD quality.

AVOID the terri-bad "HD Collection" on Ps3/360 !!!
>>
>>315310686
>I have one of those old PS3s with the PS2 chips inside them
In that case, there's nothing stopping you from playing them on PS3.

Remember to grab the SH1 from PSN Store first though. It's just few bucks, and easily the best game in series. Obviously very important chapter considering the lore too.

it's more of a figure of speech kind of comparison. It did still (try to) actionize the series, offering more modern, responsive controls and focusing more on combat. You got dodge moves, attack combos, quick keys for healing, and so on. Where as in RE4 you can pistol+round-house kick italianos, in HC you can literally slash and stab lock most enemies with your starting knife.

The game's also a blatant SH: The Movie - The game, down to the PH's appearance and design. It even has the film's "cultists" in mining suits and steam pouring from streets.
>>
>>315308153
Homecoming plays nothing like the original games. It's quite literally more of a foggier Uncharted-game, than a Silent Hill.

SH1-3 use traditional tank controls, occasionally changing camera-angles, and no HUD of any kind. SH4 experimented with 2D controls + HUD, and is partially shunned because of this.
